View Full Version : Leeboo's Nova Project
Hi I'm new to PNG, although I have followed most of the progress threads before registering. I am 16 and have a 1991 red Nova Trip 1.0. I have been working at the car slowly since I got it in July 07, don't worry, no bodykits or electric superchargers lol. I have lots of progress pics but can't post them up until I have 15 comments, so I will fire them up as soon as you lot have made it possible! Cheers
Sounds good, what have you achieved so far?
Cheers for the comment iainel, the shell has had some welding which has been done over a period of time, and I am just tidying the car up. I have put in a red SRi interior, and have GSi skirts and spoiler not yet fitted. I have renewed all engine fluids and plugs, and I am planning to make the car look like a red over black SR. I did lower the car 60mm on Gmax springs, but they were too bouncy etc, so they are gone. I have SR alloys also. I have also fixed the driver's door rather than searching for a new one, as it had some rust.
Bump..
15 comments and everyone gets to see my small block Nova with a weber!! lol nice way of putting it!
Question, all 3 heater control lights aren't working. Likely to be fuses?

boyle_46, cheers. What type/spec of Nova have you got?
Vaughan, of course the money spending will pay off, it's a Novalol . Cheers!
Stuarty, thanks. Yes you are right, and great he was, too. I will be watching your threadon the GSi.
Comments welcome
Great progress! Glad you're cracking on with the important things first (welding) and not messing about with rubbish while it rots away. lol Rear arches look solid too which is a bonus.
looks like a very nice nova you have there!

14-01-08, 07:58 PM
Cleaned up really well mate, have you started putting the front end back together yet or that?
Oh yea some may have noticed my query in the Mecanical section about starting problems, went out with the jump leads this evening and the car started straight away.
Lol I'm quite tempted to try that backfire thing mentioned in the anti-lag thread, because my car only has one small silencer and no cat. But don't want to ruin anything, I'm only 16 so don't laugh :)
vaughanmc
14-01-08, 08:02 PM
I'm 15 mate I wouldn't try anything silly with it
Not worth it
Try whatever lol You look like you know what you're doing so anything that breaks will be fun to fix.
iainel, thanks once again for the comment, yes, the outer arches are good, but the inner arches took some welding but are now good and strong, primed, seam sealed, and undersealed!
adam c, thanks very much, you probably know that Nova owners need to be keen lol
Yes Vaughan, I have built the front end all back up, and the suspension has been re-installed after the welding.
I have also quickly sprayed the driver's door, but the areas that have been re-painted will be covered in grey vinyl like an SR so a good finish is not vital, as long as theres no rust poking through! lol

looks good there mr, you certainly look like you know what your doing, and as said before great to see another member from N.I! :D
Try whatever lol You look like you know what you're doing so anything that breaks will be fun to fix.
Haha! I don't think I should, a haynes manual will only get me so far lol . I want to keep my little ohv in one piece for the time being, and don't know whast risks are involved with that caper!
By the way, a comment to everyone reading this thread... I cannot take credit for all of the welding done on the car, the only fabrication and welding I done myself was the splash guard, my Uncle done the rest, cheers! I tend to do finishing and mechanical stuff within my skill.
Don't know if I have mentioned it, but I gave the car a mini service (?), new oil, filter, plugs, coolant etc!
Cheers NovaJackie. I can only try!
Women who drive Novas, it doesn't get much better than that does it!! lol

looks like its coming on well , im from up in Antrim direction in lisburn , my cars not far off the same as yours , ive a 1.2 expression put a gsi spoiler on it and gsi skirts , astra mk3 alloys , gsi steering wheel ripspeed dvd head unit , sony explode 15 inch sub in boot and 2 red sony explode 6 x 9's , was heasitant about putting them om the parcel shelf but found another at a scrappy so i just cut it in the end , ive a little welding to do on my drivers sill and a bitt of tiding and filling on the rear arches but all in good time mate , keep up the good work .

looks a tidy little car there mate, whats the underside like? what you goin to do engine wise?
keep up good work fella:thumb:
boyle_46, thanks, your project sounds great also, I look forward to seeing pictures on here?
DW-Nova, cheers, the floor and chassis are mint apart from where it has been welded in the arches! Its a good strong shell now. Engine wise, I am not sure. The 1.0 is comically slow but hey i didn't buy it for power. My main aim is to get it MOT'd and on the road before much else is done modification wise. Ideally I would change the engine for a 1600 GSi or 14 SR, but as you might know, insurance prices are a complete joke over here, and I don't fancy insuring it as a 1.0 when it's not, especially as I am still at school with light pockets. lol We will see.
7ova, cheers mate!
Ok guys I thought I'd make a small update, with pictures of course!
First off, pictures of the previously mentioned driver's side door repair.
Primed:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010650.jpg
This is the pillar smoothed and painted, just the section, then wet sanded and buffed:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010652.jpg
And the bottom section painted, wet sanded and polished also:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010655.jpg
Also a friend was down one saturday night so gave me a hand with replacing a rubber boot on the driveshaft as the old one was ripped. We had never done anything with driveshafts before, but managed the best.
We even managed to get the shaft out without removing the top or bottom ball joints. During:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010628.jpg
After:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010629.jpg
Cheers Ross.
I will also include some pictures from just before the car was built back up.
Wings cleaned and sealed underneath:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010630.jpg
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010633.jpg
Inner wings etc degreased, suface rust gone, and thoroughly sealed with 2 or 3 coats of underseal:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010631.jpg
Without bumper, or grille, also lowered in this picture:

That is all, comments all welcome!

Looking good mate, what you painting it with, Rattle cans? it's suprising how good a finish you can get with these if you take your time to nicley prep it and use quite alot of laquer. just be aware with that underseal, if your using it DONT brush it on, it sags and collects water underneath, use spray underseal or stonechip, its better. good luck with the rest of it, whats the plans now?
Thanks stuarty, most of the dirty work is done now!
Cheers DW-Nova, yes I painted those 2 sections of the door with rattle cans, the finish isn't good at all but I didn't use laquer with the flame red paint anyway. I did brush on the underseal, hopefully it won't sag becuase I let each light coat set before the next was applied. Also, any bare metal from welding was seam sealed before undersealing so water shouldn't get in.
Ok well I have been playing about on photoshop with myideas for the cars looks.
The first I came up with was this, with mk1 SR wheel trims:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S8001647modded_greytrims.jpg
And the second was this, basically an SR replica:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S8001647modded_SRrep.jpg
Any comments or ideas welcome!
like the wheels in the first one
dont put any vinyl on the doors/pillar
looks better with out
Cheers for the comment Stoo, thought the wheels trims would be different.
Here's the standard pic:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S8001647.jpg
I dunno, I like the idea of red over black? Especially if I got some bump strips off an SRi or SR?
All thoughts welcome
i like the clean sided look
no skirts, no vinyl, no bump strips et
vaughanmc
20-01-08, 02:06 PM
I'm the same as Stu - Keep it that way but put the GTE wheels on :)
Cheers Vaughan.
I'm so surprised at your opinions lol, I still like the vinyl for some reason? I think it just looks too 'base spec' with the red pillars etc. And I have the red interior etc already fitted. I have skirts and spoiler lying in the back of the car, so those will definately be fitted once I paint them.
I see where yous are coming from though, best kept simple and all that, I am usually of that opinion too.
What does everybody else think?
And, can those SRi bump strips be got new from Vauxhall? If so, how much?
spoiler yes
skirts no
keep it clean
vaughanmc
20-01-08, 03:27 PM
Bump strips, Aye
But there pricey lol Thats why I left mine without them
Keep up the good work! :)
Cheers Vaughan, I thought they might be pricey! But I think they came on base spec models too, so they might pop up at some stage on a breaker maybe.
getting them off ruins them usually
hi mate
colour coded top spoiler and mirror covers
painted grey, front and back bumpers
all stickers and badgers off
lower it 40mm
set of 16" grey speedlines or soft stars
thats what i would do
Cheers for the input 7ova. You're suggestions are good and pretty much what I plan to do, apart from the wheels, which I can't afford just yet.
I have got paint mixed to the colour of the car, for painting the spoiler and mirror covers. Badges will probably be staying, but yes I intend to lower it 30-40mm because I had 60mm springs in it, and while it handled fine, the ride comfort was non existent lol.
Thanks
vaughanmc
21-01-08, 08:08 AM
Remember its a Nova lol There not comfy cars in the 1st place
Aslong as it looks good, mines is down 60mm on 45 sidewall tyres and the comfort is OK
Ok heres a bit of an update (sorry about the pictures, its dark).
First off, centre caps for the SR ronal alloys:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S40100077.jpg
Also some original shape clear indicators:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010008-1.jpg
This one is a bit random - I sanded the exhaust and sprayed it satin black a la rally style-ish (this looks fine, trust me):
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010014.jpg
Next is the rev counter, which has been lying in a damp barn, and was used in my uncle's Chevette years ago. I wired it with its own independant hidden switch, and it still illuminates green like new. Cheers to my uncle:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010011.jpg
Excuse the temporary mess, but heres how the rev counter looks in relation to the dash and centre console:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010012.jpg
And lastly, some very basic ICE, but I haven't get the CD player working. The car seemed to have an aftermarket wiring kit fitted before so I am starting from scratch, and can't seem to get it going? I have asked on here but still haven't had any luck at all getting it going????
Kenwood 4 x 45w headunit:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010013.jpg
JVC 13cm speakers from by brother's Corsa which were used before he got the full sound system. Plenty decent for what I want:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010010.jpg
The spoiler and planned grey painted areas aren't done, but it will happen at some stage.
Comments welcome!
^^I think i have found out why the CD player wouldn't work - I pulled the fuse out of the back of the actual headunit and it has blown - hopefully it will work once I stick a new one in!
Ok this isn't a very exciting update, but I like to keep track!
First off, I got the Kenwood headunit wired up and working. It was only used once before I got it so it is mint:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010008888.jpg
I also got a fresh set of plates made. These are from my local vauxhall dealer and have their logo on the bottom. Sensible and sporty :
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010007777.jpg
And a brand new battery, and rear wiper blade. How exciting is that? Yeaa!! :
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/S4010009.jpg
And this should be with me shortly, thanks to John H:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/knboltonfilter.jpg
Also, the MOT is booked for 1st of April but I might get a cancellation over my easter holidays, as I turn 17 on 20th of March.
Just need 2 tyres and light levels checked now really....and after MOT I will get round to doing the skirts etc!!
Looks good, daft place for a rev counter though!
Cheers iainel. Yea I was waiting for someone to say that lol , you are right but its mostly for show, and the illumination matches the CD player above it. Might move it in the future.
Other omments welcome:thumb:

Any updates mate?
Sorry mate no proper updates just yet!
I have just been wiring up speakers and putting the centre console back together, so its a nice place to be! lol It is up for MOT soon so I need to paint 2 alloys so they can get tyres.
To be honest I'm sicking looking at the outside of the thing now. I have skirts but they aren't fitted yet - I have hoped to paint the sides up to bumper level (and skirts) rover hurricane grey, but its awkward because I have no compressor and spray gun, and can't drive it anywhere as its not legal! I kind of have to paint the bottom of the sides, because the bottom of the driver's door has been sprayed and doesn't colour match at all! I have paint for the spoiler so I can get it sprayed by a mate soon.
Not much time left to carry out the plans now :wtf:
I like the black tailpipe
Cheers Adam I think it looks more purposeful but not standard! The pea shooter is on now though for MOTlol
Here's how the centre console is looking now with painted heater knobs, headunit and rev counter (haven't got middle heater backllight working?) I think it looks ok:

Looks good with them mate - They remind me of my mums old Nova Flair :)
Anyhoo, its the Nova's 17th birthday today lol, so I fitted side skirts to one side so far:

Over and outhttp://www.reallymeansounds.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbs_up.gif
O yea, comments welcome
Wee update! Haven't done much due to having the L's up but...
Already had these Irmscher Vectra Super Touring Flying Chips badges so stuck one on the boot:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/SP_A1371.jpg
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/SP_A1391.jpg
Also got a Fusion polished show cage for the rear (just set in to see what it looked like, its out now til I get the test):
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/SP_A1358.jpg
And I want to strip out the rear and put the cage in, maybe look like this, plus all the side panels/seatbelts etc off:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/SP_A1333.jpg
And I thought she deserved another wee machine polish:
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/SP_A1362.jpg
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/SP_A1363.jpg
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/SP_A1369.jpg
Also re-fitted the K&N and cold air feed, but the engine is too big to fit in the camera shot, so hard luck lol
Thoughts?

looking good mate looks alot like mines bar the cage and heater switches lol , where did you get that cage if you dont mind me asking and how much ? , any plans to paint the wing mirror covers ? im getting carried away here but please remove that ghey vinyl that runs up the side of the car rodger that . Nath
Cheers lad.. Got the cage privately from a mate. Aye I have a GSi spoiler so when I paint that, I plan to do the mirror covers too.
Agree'd the vinyl is gaylol , but I need one of those fudge wheel thingys to rub it off, so not too bothered at the mo! Maybe getting 40mm suspension tomorrow night.

looks really nice :) does the cage fit with the rear seats in place ?
looks really nice :) does the cage fit with the rear seats in place ?
Cheers lad! Yea the cage fits perfectly with the rear seats in, still room for 3 people in the back. But in a collision, the two outside people would bang their heads off the bars, so I will either have it stripped out with the cage, or seats with no cage!
repair work looks ace , and car is comig on fella :thumb: , not a lover of the chips on anything but vectra's though me lol
I passed the test back in May, and the Nova hasn't missed a beat! Well up until now :( , I fryed the wire for the starter motor, and it shorted, so the dashboards off now until I get some wire to repair the damaged bit.
Its been a while!
Its now down 60mm on spax, got rid of the cage. I also put on some Corsa Sport rims for a change, still have the GSi's.
http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd139/leeberto/DSC_0083.jpg
Also made this little custom bit. Got a spare centre vent panel thingy, ripped out the vents, cut out for the rev counter, and then smoothed it in. Thats ready to put in when I put the dash back in. During:

As said on RMS mate, looks really good
How come you took the 60mm springs out ?
Cheers again Vaughan, ah they were a bit harsh on the back roads. I drive on bumpy roads quite often so 35mm seems like a better choice.

Hmm, I'll find that out next year
My mates standard Nova is well bumpy on the backroads - Oh the joys lol

Car looks mighty clean, loving the modded heater housing!
Thanks Pete! The rev counter is something a bit different. Perhaps a bit modern for a Nova but I like it.

I'm considering a wee trip over again when I pass my test next year :)
I'm in Fermanagh Vaughan. Wee word of advice though - make sure your wipers are fully functional before you think about entering Fermanagh! lol :(

Always pishing down like ? lol
Same everywhere though, even in Scotland!
Lad you don't know the half of it!!! Anytime I go out to wash the Nova, it pisses rain just as I'm putting the chamois away after drying it lol . Or else it rains when theres a coat of polish on the car!!!
