Rick Draper
10-01-08, 11:38 PM
Yup VXR oil pump and pickup pipe.
Got these parts as well for the rebuild:
http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/Draper1981/DSC00033.jpg
AIM strada dash, with egt probe etc.
Coscast head ported by Neil Roper,
Fresh block with oil sprayers fitted,
Solid lifters,
+1mm valves,
HKS head gasket,
Hydraulic clutch setup,
Possibly a new exhaust manifold.

sounds good. what happend at total vaux meet then?
Rick Draper
10-01-08, 11:54 PM
Head gasket failed at 2.2 bar boost and about 500bhp. Melted a chunk out of the old coscast head and forced all the water out of the header tank as it instantly pressurised with the boost.

Might be selling my 200SX exhaust manifold. Its modded to fit a GT30 and has been ceramic coated inside and out. Its also got a boss welded in ti for a EGT probe.

Same turbo?
I guess its tailored for different power characteristic?
Rick Draper
11-01-08, 02:44 PM
Its a manifold with totally equal length runners so it should be slightly better. Bit back to square one though as i means a new downpipe and mods to the boost hoses are needed. Also i will have to get it ceramic coated again if i want that doing.

Worse things happen at sea and all that.
Just means that this rebuild is ticking some of the box's i should have ticked on the last one, larger valves, hydraulic clutch and possibly a cage of some description.

great work rick
and possibly a cage of some description.
Leaving the interior in?
Rick Draper
11-01-08, 03:49 PM
Leaving the interior in?
Yes the interior will be stopping in place. Want a cage so i feel semi safe in it. Will just be a bolt in one with door bars etc, possibly from fabricage or the like. I might look at fitting a full weld in cage in the future and going the whole hog, roof off to remove sunroof etc. But that depends if i decide i can feel any difference between cage and no cage.
Cool, id definently leave the interior in, its too nice to remove lol
Rick, are you still going to get the cage trimmed in leather, that'd be sexual lol

Fooking hell lol
How come youve started with a complete different block instead of using the old one?
Rick Draper
21-01-08, 06:22 PM
Hassle and time involved in removing it when i had a spare block available to use.
Ah right.
When are you hoping to have it all back in for?
If Rick gets it built up it might be going back in first week in Feb I think the plan is.
Block looks a bit better now than when you got it off me Rick!!
How comes it took nigh on 3 years before, but took 3 months to re-assemble the new engine lol! Only joking be nice to see it in the flesh some time this year!

Not messing about then! Good work!
Nice. Everyone knows blue blocks make more power too
Are all the pistons etc brand new too? Must be costing a fair wack, not that it bothers you considering how much the rest of the cars spec must have cost.
will it have Vtak y0??

Yep thats the one jim!
Block is blue so its easy to spot and oil leaks etc.
Now aiming to have it in one piece over the next few weeks. There has been a bit of a delay with a few bits and bobs for it. Like sourcing the parts for the pedal end of a hydraulic clutch setup.
Rick Draper
30-01-08, 03:59 PM
Engine build is coming along, its just waiting on new piston rings to arrive then i have everything for the proper full build. Up untill then i am just doing the dry build to check all clearences on the engine. Just waiting for the head set to arrive and a water pump which should be here tomorrow then i can bolt the head down.
Shell progress is slow, waiting for the ap master cylinder for the hydraulic clutch setup and then i can get that all plumbed in and working.
Seems like a lot of work for a photo shoot then a for sale ad though...

**** me will it move?
Rick Draper
31-01-08, 07:16 PM
Was pushing about 500bhp on the old head with stock lifters and valves, this time i have a more heavily ported head(lots more), the CR is higher, solid lifters and it has larger inlet and exhaust valves.
higher compression?
i thoulght lowering was better for boost??
Highering apparently reduces lag, and is better for off boost driveability.
surely it isnt great for big boost then?
lee coley
31-01-08, 07:57 PM
i have no idea what all that is but it sounds good.
how does it hold traction?
Rick Draper
31-01-08, 08:36 PM
2.2 bar boost will be fine on the new higher CR. Spoken to my mapper about it and its can handle the higher CR so all is good.
wowser
good luck with it mate

When should the head be back?
lol those head and crank bolts would look at home in one of my tractors - pretty bloody beefy.
Good work there. Hope the head/gasket can cope after all the effort. It would be nice to finally see 1 of these vaux engines putting out reasonably reliable big numbers to match the likes of cosworth etc:)

Had a productive day today, started by removing the old block:
http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc66/Draper1981/CIMG1924.jpg
Then i set to on the hydraulic clutch setup which took longer than expected as i rounded the allen key out so out came the drill:

Then i made a start on the wiring which is going to be sorted out:

Is there any benefit over cable? Apart from being more complex.

Waiting for the clutch bits to arrive so i can drill bulkhead for the master cylinder. I also need the new piston rings which could well take quite some time to arrive as they cannot give me a delivery date.
I have also just bought a bolt in cage for the nova off colin smith so that will need fitting as well. Should stiffen the shell quite a lot.

Did you price a new one up first ? i only paid ?317 (delivered) for my 6 point Rollcentre cage !
You just leaving it as a bolt in or you gonna tag it to the A / B pillars ? looks like your gonna have to make / buy some mounting plates (to weld to the floor) for it as well.
Rick Draper
04-02-08, 06:46 PM
Yup priced up a full fabricage and it was ?500+ for one. I am kind of limited with the shell having a sunroof as most cages do not fit but fabricage do one that fits so have the market cornered.
chris gsi

With head work you get what you pay for. I have had a head in the past off gary poole on mig and that was good, not worked as heavily as this one but it was a lot cheaper and the work was good. He has done quite a lot of people LET and xe heads on there and is very resonable. Depends what you want though.

Keeping the sunroof motor cover. Just going to cut it up to make it fit.
Are you planning on padding that cage? Especially in the back? Im sure you could do something nice with some fabric to match the rest of the interior? The amount of torque steer this beast creates would probably crack your skull like an egg lol

Bought these lights off Novaneil, they are brand new. Going to out them on and see how they look. Still a bit unsure if they will look right or not.

Quick update.
Steve has almost finished the engine, its all times up but he is just having to sort out fitting the cam cover as i ****ed up drilling where the lower bolt needs to go in the oil pump for the swindon cam belt cover.
On the shell side, just waiting for a few bits then i will start on it again. Feel it could be on borrowed time as my mate was round earlier in his TVR Sagaris, stunning car and i am very tempted to chop the nova and the ctr in and get one. Either one of those or a new Exige S.

Similar to you and mig..What, you've moved house, and not had internet connection for the passed 3 months and by the time you got it sorted out you came back onto the forum to people making judgements and making up viscious rumours that you'd left and fell out with everyone, and by which time three months had passed and you thought "whats the point".
When the real story is the fact I hadn't fallen out with anyone, I was still friends with everyone, yet someone made up a nasty rumour?
Seems like these chinese internet whispers are still doing the rounds if, 4 years later people (you) still believe what they've read, and didn't bother asking, nor contacting the person involved (ie: me)
Is that the same scenario as this? as I hadn't realised you'd been away in all honesty, and I certainly didn't hurl abuse at people like you're doing, and offending other members of the club, by saying their cars aren't as good as yours.
If it makes at all any difference, I personally think that my car is 10x what yours is, if you want to play childish, and I dare say that most people will tend to agree, and before you say - not just on PNG either.

Just strikes me that, you've had some beef with someone, yet rather than sorting it out with that particular person, or people. You've decided to take it upon yourself to throw in your towel with the whole club, start offending other members of the club (as you've already stated, you've never met me)
Saying that our cars aren't as good, as powerful, as shiney as yours (or whatever) is a very bleak look you've made for yourself.

OK, well that tells me you have a problem with me, for what reason I don't know.
The way I see it, or figured it out, someone posted a thread about starting a whip around for Lee after his misfourtune.
You then decided it was in the same vein as when some bloke from another forum ASKED for help after blowing his engine up, and ended the post by calling everyone vvankers, and proceeded to then start another post calling Lee a pikey - again, why I don't know it was a genuinely nice post by a mate of his.
By the way you just compared my situation to yours, it would appear your comparison skills leave a lot to be desired.
Therefore, I am no longer offended at the fact have a problem with me.

Anyone else how can i call them a mate or say if i like them or not when i have never met them?I understand your definition of "mates", however... does that mean beacuse I've never met you - I should have a problem with you?
Thats a rather bitter way of life in my opinion, but as said - your choice.
I cant see a problem with banter with your mates. But hurling abuse at people you dont know? I cant see how thats ok at all? This site is one of the friendliest ive been on for the main reason that the admin has worked hard to create that atmosphere. If your unsure if someone will take offence to one of your comments, I suggest you dont post it.
I've been on this site for a 18months now, and have only come across one 'Closed' thread, which shows an excellent atmosphere that needs minimal moderation imo.
