maybe there is air leakin in on the carb, usually on the gasket where it joins to the inlet manifold.

I had a similar problem with my 1.2 merit a while back - but mine was sluggish when I tried to accelerate from roundabouts, lights etc.

Traced it to dodgy carb - had tried cleaning it but no good. Got a new one and its sweet now. If its after you put choke in, check your choke connections - could be off (starving the carb)

have you looked at the dizzy?????????????
maybe the vacuum advance diaphragm has failed. simple test take the vacuum hose off at the carb end (whilst the eng. is running) and stick your finger over the hole. then suck on the hose. if the engine note does not change, get a new vacuum advance unit from the dealer.
Or it could be the carb. strip it and give it a good clean.

Keep the faith
