decided to tune the 1.4sr nova up abit with spending the leaste i can.i didnt think it was good enough to put in the projects section so im doing a WIP on the engine only!! this is my plan.

engine is standard so far.
?40 brought me a 1.2 head. the 1.2 heads have larger valves.
my dad has a laithe in his garage and has bored out the exhaust ports for me.
polish the pistons and anythibg else i can.
i had loads of 1.6 bits off my old gsi so the full exhaust system is going on there.
1.6 cam to allow the valves to open more.
induction kit off cavalier. and thats it.
so ive got ?60 to spare if anyone know of any other little tricks then would like to know. pics will follow over the weekend aswell.

the engine how it started v

i know the spark plugs are in up side down as well. hahaha. done it so the paint would'nt drip down the holes.

Looking good matey what paint did you use?

Fit a 1.3 inlet with the head and the 1.4 carb.

IIRC the standard 1.4SR cam has the better duration and will be more suited to carb application.

EDIT with the remaining ?60 maybe purchase a Weber 32/34 DMTL? Otherwise new dizzy cap, rotor arm and general service things. If you have access to machining tools then you could port match the manifold (minimal gain but free - apart from yours/your dads time)

the 1.2 head "shouldnt" have bigger valves than the 1.4 head... the PORTS are bigger and flow better though.

Please measure the compression ratio before assembly, I've a feeling a 1.2 head might put the CR up too much so you might need to do a bit of combustion chambe work to lower it.

see sig link -> 1.4 tuining guide for a how to measure the CR

I ran a 1.2 head on my 1.4SR and ran lovely, if I remember though the compression was high i.e. around 11.5-12:1 lol

I used a Blydenstein B+ head though so it may be different compared to a standard one. I'd of thought the C14SE head might be better in your case?

hum. what about a double head gasket then to lower the compresion?
i used hamerite red paint. do you think it might boil off?

tom beverly: did you notice much difference?

Stuart

dont double the gaskets!

measure the CR and see where you stand

ill do it tomorrow. i measured it before i brought it and there was only a fraction difference. let you know tomorrow when i re-measure it propely

You measure it with what tho?
I.e. a mm difference is quite big in terms of CR.

brought head gasket set and head bolt today for ?45, so now only have ?15 to spend.

also searching through my garage a few hours ago. and came across a 1.6 gsi fuel pump and a weber carb of my old old 1.4sr nova. forgot i took it off. i thought i threw it away. what a bonus.

does anyone know if the pump will make much difference?? and if they know for defenate if you have to have a pressure regulator on it? where can i get one cheap as only have ?15 to spend.

Use the mechanical pump as you'll not get a good fuel pressure regulator for ?15

James P

was thinking that. how much you recon ill get for tho?

?40 for a good one if I remember correctly.

Spend your ?15 on fuel :p.

yer will do dan.

got some pic up of what i done today. didnt spend all day doing it, also havent put the webber carb on there yet because i remember it being out of tune.
does anyone know how to adjust them or shall i get an auto tuner to do it? the webber carb does'nt have any marks on it to indicate what type it is, so does anyone know what it is?

also is there loads difference in the performance if i put it on? pic below. V

Looks like a weber 32/34 to me.
It should be stamped on the front edge of the bottom plate of the carb.

cant use the 1.6 cam anyway as there is no lobe for the fuel pump

tom beverly: did you notice much difference?

You couldn't compare as mine was a B+ head and at the same time I fitted T40's and an AST2.

Bonus finding the 32/34 though :D, have you got a suitable inlet since the 1.4SR you have won't be very good your 1.2 head.

You'll find a noticeable improvement, you may be able to get a service kit for your remaining ?15 to ensure its running well. Then just remove the jets and clean them, maybe leave them soaking in some carb cleaner overnight. You should be able to DIY tune it really, they are much easier than T40's to get right.

guna get it running with the standard carb then maybe change it to the webber. ill see how fast it is 1st. should be running tomorrow. gota get oil.

let you know how much faster it is!!! (fingers crossed)

and riggy ive taken the cam out and put it in the 1.4sr cam casing. is that what you ment??

Riggy
06-01-08, 06:37 PM
no the 1.6 cam wont work if your using a mech pump , as it wont have the lobe to pump it

James P

well ive done it before in my old old 1.4 sr and it worked fine.
