number plates/show plates

can you have the black plates with the white letters (old fashioned) or can they only be for show or a certain aged car?

Yep, pre '73 - my dads old dolomite was out by one year and that was 74.

If you google for show plates though, no doubt you'll find some online retaillers who will make up some plates "for off road use" without needing the correct documentation.
