This thread is the history and work in progress of my first car, though every stage (including the dodgy bits lol) I started way back in June ?03 with the purchase of J710BYD (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72037), 1.2 Flair with the carb engine, it was the straightest car I?d seen with only 46k on the clock, 1 old lady owner and FVSH, it was presented to me by my best mate?s Dad, so I stumped up the ?850 asking price and started polishing.

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/870/1020247imgfr9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The mods were limited as it was only a temporary car till I found something I wanted, just some cheap audio? more on this later.

I was happy driving about for 2-3months till some ?mates? loosen my hub caps and I lost one. Now I couldn?t drive round like that and couldn?t find a new one anywhere, so I had to buy some alloys  it was down hill from there really. The wheels came from a friend, Smith Twisters ? mmmm tasty:

http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/1583/1030385imgzq9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Now I had some wikid wheelz, I could pimp it up round town with ma home boyz, innit lol well... me and two others went and took some photos:

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/7080/1040419imggd3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Trust me that fiesta looked ace when he finished
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/2315/dsc00664yl1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
and the ?5 was wicked in its day lol

From here I had to get it lowered as it got a reputation for pulling wheelies, this was done by a good friend who could build nova?s in his sleep, it had -60mm springs on SR shocks and 2.0 16v brakes.

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/8782/1040435imgeq5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Also pictured are the red side repeaters, laguna splitter and black meshed grill, it started looking pretty smart I thought, even with the gash wheels.

At this point I started talking to Ben Gunn as we went to college together and used to MTB, some of the old skool may remember him with the gold 5dr and then the Rosso Corsa 3dr. He informed me about this site, then called novaload, so I signed up and didn?t post for about a year.

Being a musically oriented person, like my dad, I decided to improve the audio somewhat. This came with help from my friend Rick with the fiesta^ and a company called Liquid ICE (http://www.liquid-ice.co.uk/)who he ended up working with and I did temporally. We keep trying to out do each other with SQ, he won, but here was my unfinished attempt:

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/4819/dsc008897yhej6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The spec end up as:

Alpine 9833R
Phoenix Gold Ti 400.2
Phoenix Gold Ti 600.2
Phoenix Gold Ti DEQ :D
Phoenix Gold Ti 10DD2 x2
JL Audio XR650CSi with Phoenix Gold Ti tweeters
12ish sheets of Dynamat extreme
PG and Streetwires used through out.

Made 138.9DB which isn’t bad for an SQ system, sounded peachy.

You may also notice the magnex exhaust in the pic ;)

At this point it was MOT time  and it failed soooo bad, over ?600 of welding and painting took place to get it though, including a new arch, spring seats and seat belt mount, on the way back from the paint shop one spring fell out but luckly hung on the beam till I got home and took a photo, well it looked cool lol

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/9560/dsc00602fw3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Stayed like this for ages till I saved up for some new wheels, which I found on eBay and won for ?60, batter and one bent, but another came up for ?5 – ideal. This is during the 3 week refurb:
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/6118/dsc00510rg0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Checking fitment:

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/4427/dsc00592lv0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And on the car, wrapped in A539’s:

http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/4816/dsc00647wj0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

At some point an Avo shock and spring kit, SR seats, a momo race wheel, digi dash and other choice mods had made the way on to the car, it was look cool

I umm’d and arrr’d about fitting GSi bumpers but as they came up fairly cheap it’d be rude not too. Pick them up and dropped them at the paintshop for a blast of satin black along with a new drivers wing as the original had rotted through from the inside. Fitting day came round quickly but I hit a problem, my magnex backbox was for a GTE and didn’t fit the GSi kit L quick phone call to Ben Gunn secured me an Ashley System and manifold of his then recently broken 1.6 T40 project. Spent the whole day cleaning and polishing and took my favourite photos of the car ever:
http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/4244/img0791cd2.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/4378/dsc00104xh2.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

May also notice the half tinted rear lights and black new shape Vauxhall badges

It was now looking the part and with the tight raspy noise of the exhaust people were asking what engine it was. To which the reply was:

‘well it a 1.2 at the moment, but it will be a 1.6….’

Ash

I started getting tired of this excuse and started trolling through eBay and here, eBay came up trumps with a winning starting bid of ?20 for a ’89 GTE engine, gearbox, ECU and loom – probably the best bargain ever! My dad and I popped down to Exeter to pick it up and although the mileage was unknown it was mint.

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/6691/dsc00980xo6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Once home I had to decide want to do with it, I didn’t really fancy using the injection as this was an old car, and probably the last one I’d get to ‘play’ with properly – I didn’t want a car that I just plug a box in and go…

At this point (about 3-3.5 years after I’d bought the run-around) I had to get dedicated and know what I wanted the car to be. With my Dad being an old petrol head he had a project of his own knocking about, a Ginneta G15 with a 998cc Hillman Imp Hillclimb/race engine running T40 Delloauto’s. These carbs seemed like a good base, and I wasn’t aloud to nick his, so a pair where purchased for ?120 from eBay. Jetted for a 2.0 Alfa or Fiat so completely wrong for what I wanted, but I didn’t know that at the time… That when I stumbled across other nova 1.6 T40 namely Dan’s and Jim’s – these specs seem to work.. and very well indeed, so that was the plan, just build the engine and swap it in…

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/1521/dsc00117kt9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/7146/dsc00116xj3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Whilst I was looking more into the plan with strengthening, etc I needed to tinker, so one day after work the standard F10 was dropped and a shiny black F13CR was fitted with a desperately needed new clutch and bearing and CV joints. Results were impressive, quicker acceleration and a better top speed due to the use of more revs
Top speed indicated – 124mph (!)
Top speed GPRS - 103mph

It was a nippy little thing that 1.2, shame to pull it out… nahh!

A problem was looming on the horizon tho – UNI
The car was put up for sale (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=66619&highlight=flair)VERY reluctantly to fund my uni adventure, luckily, despite all the interest, it didn’t sell (Wahoo) This may be due to me hiding the car and myself when someone came round to view it… Lol
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/8199/dsc00901hd5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Space was made in the garage Dad and I just finished building and I trotted off to uni. Where I collected many many parts to do the engine swap, the most memorable and annoying was the purchase of a Blydenstien B pack head…

http://img390.imageshack.us/img390/9263/dsc00377gi3.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img390.imageshack.us/img390/2311/dsc00375vl7.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
Luckly I got it cheap and made my money back on it after a few months and picked up a smallblock Blydenstien B+ pack head for good money.

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/4018/dsc00541vf3.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
During short stays back home pulling apart the car I discovered it was going to be more than an engine swap.

http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/7316/img0690ii5.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/5229/img0694ms8.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/9483/10092007037zk9.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

Plus the whole rear panel and front panel. Every thing else was mint!

Despite this, I was attached to the car now and would repair it to it original state plus a few trick extras, around this time I was going on a few track days and really enjoying it, including the blue flags telling me to slow down :D as I then learnt, slower into the corners = faster out. Anyway as I was putting a fast 1.6 in my lightweight shell *cough* Dynamat *cough* so I started prepping it for some track (ab)use.

A year has now passed (seems like lot more) and I’ve come to the conclusion that the red shell is too far gone, to get it where I want it will take minimum ?3k on top of the panels I already bought. So a deal was done and this famous piece of nova history (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=89567)is now sat in my garage – well happy, few things to ‘iron’ out but they can wait – I want to go fast! lol

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b316/bennh3/Trax%2007/dannovaresize.jpg

Came with nice and light polycarbs too bonus. The plan now is to just get it running and to the TV/PNG rolling roll day. Lots more planned but not enough hours in the day (or money) It will eventually end up like one of my old photoshops, but that could be years down the line. I’ve already planned more power and control for next year in the form of an AST3 and a SCCR ‘box. Once it is running I’ve already got a cav gear linkage to match up to my R/J linkage, some rather nice bucket seats with side mounts and some very cool wheels in the making

The engine build is on track,

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/770/dsc00081ks2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
firstly it was stripped down and found to be perfect.

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/5453/dsc00170yo8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Then painted up

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/4429/dsc00461dd8.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/7578/dsc00459yd3.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
I de-seamed the rods and polished the pistons at uni (yes I was very bored one night)

http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/411/dsc00412rt8.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)
The crank and flywheel where sent off to John Peratt engineering, who also supplied the heavy duty shells and gave me what I believe are group A/Cossie pistons

John also carried out some extra work on my Billy head, re-sat the wasted valves, re-fitted the double valve springs and also skimmed it – took part of the spark plug housing off :D

Well I dont want to add too much weight TBH

All sorts of ideas have been running though my head tho, GTE kit with the lines smoothed bar the top one, painted grey lower and black plastic top,

It will be having a flocked cut down mk2 dash to hold my custom dash, based on the Lotus/stack one I have (CANbus is gay)

Cherry red leather seats and panelling keep popping into my head - but they want make me go fast now, will they... lol

Brilliant Ash.

Keeping the 1600 T40 Corner going strong..

I think a similar decision will have to be made regarding my shell this summer, just need to get my hands on something famous

It's tidyish.. but when you consider replacing Rear Arches, Sills, Front Wngs and a respray.... before thinking about cage and paint. Then it becomes alot cheaper to buy something that's allready done for 1k !

We'l see.. But i can't wait to see yours finished. If i was on my placment year (next year) i'd have had dans shell instantly !

Before I fit the engine a few things needed doing. The tiebars came off, cleaned back and painted.

http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/2056/01012008281yv7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

As were the hubs which required a sledge hammer to remove the bottom ball joints lol

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/1650/01012008280be1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Whilst they were drying I swapped the standard wishbones with my R/J and plated ones. The R/J shims are too short but easily sorted with a couple thrust washers.

http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/2408/01012008282sb7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Still waiting for stuff to dry, plus im waiting for some new bottom ball joints to turn up.

What's the benefit of rose joints opposed to the standard setup?

And the engine is finally bolt together.

http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/7807/01012008284ig6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Now just waiting on a cam belt, water pump, rocker gasket and a few carb parts. Thinking of spraying the cam cover satin black now tho.

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/327/01012008285dp5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The two gearbox's waiting a FD swap, but Im thinking I may keep the standard one for top speed round the 'ring :)

Ash

What's the benefit of rose joints opposed to the standard setup?

errr, they look cool :D lol

No, it's just to remove even more play than polybushes and (the reason I bought them) to adjust camber by winding the thread in and out.

Cheers Nick, sometimes I wish I didn't paint it all for the "doesn't need to look good as it goes quick - 'ardcore" look lol

Very minor update, I fitted the washers to the wishbones, nice marine grade stainless ones, I dont like rust much

And some random pics to prove I have the shell in my garage:

The new bottom ball joints turned up and were soon blasted with the black hammerite

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/1992/05012008292lg9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Then the whole front end was assembled. Note the AVO shocks and springs were only cleaned up and sprayed over the exposed areas as they will be soon changed for coilovers :thumb:

I'm just waiting (again:roll: ) for parts to turn up before I can do any more major stuff, so I turned my attention to the sump that I didn't clean very well and just spray on top... Good job I did really!

Whats your project completion date?

Ash
09-01-08, 08:47 PM
Lee - Yea, shouldn't be that differant, maybe just tarted up a bit to start with. I'm expecting the 'thats Dan's car comments' Hope I do the car justice :)

Mike - Hopefully I'll make the 'ring trip, which for some reason seems less daunting to me than Combe lol Once I've got a few laps of the 'ring under my belt im sure I'll be used to the car so combe and the others won't seem too bad... (is that odd?)
I'm sure lifts could be arranged ;)

Sounds good cheif :D my Nova wont be making the Ring Trip nor PV08 :( As it stands at the minute, with me working away pratically every week i only get about 12 hours work max on LHA a week. So its not going to be done anytime soon :( however on the other side of things, where i work now is literally a 50% payrise so i can get all the shizzle i wanted lol

Some good progress youve made mate, and waiting on parts is a pain in the @rse lol ive done a lot of it recently :D

Sweet Ash, coming on well.

Whats your project completion date?

Well as soon as the engines in a fires, im booking a place at the PNG R/R day which is the 22nd of March, then one of the main reasons I've kept at it is to attend and possibly lead a memorial service 'thing' which is a couple of days after for two close friends who died last year - both of whome helped me out loads with the car in its early days.:)
Then obviously the ring trip, err whenever that is lol

lol lol its STILL gotta be painted, all the plating has got to be done, im still yet to get seats and some fecking tyres before it can go anywhere!

I think i should have budgeted more time!! Ive got around 90% of what i need to do it, just not enough time to actually "do it" so to speak!

No updates, but looking for advise.

What fuel pump would be recommended for T40 use? I've been looking at the Facet Silvertop with a FilterKing FPR, but keep reading conflicting information.

Is the pump better mounted near the tank or in the bay?
I've also read these pumps can be quite noisy, it that right or was someone just moaning?
And, finally, FilterKing FPR's, what differance does it make what size you have?

Hi Mate,

I'm running a 1600 8v with twin 40's

Currently using a Facet Silver Competition fuel pump with xr2i fuel filter and filter king fuel regulator. This set up does run really well, fuel pressure build up in no time plus you don't have to pump the accelerator loads to get the thing started (may old one was like a work out in the gym)

The pump is mounted in the spare wheel well and is very loud!

Cheers for the info :thumb: I think im going to mount it near the tank on a big piece of rubber

Any way some engine porn:

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/586/25012008371oe2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And finally its all timed up good and proper (I hope)
Woke up this morning in a panic wondering if I put the pistons in the right way round  a quick check through my old build thread proved I did it correctly lol what a time to think about it

Next job is to find a 4 paddle helix clutch for decent money, change the FD's on the gearboxes and swap the 5th cog

Steve
26-01-08, 12:03 AM
Excellent thread mate, strange how its gone from one small block owner to another, anyone else would have 'whacked an XE in' so is this going to be an all out track car or you gonna use it on the road as well?

Shame about the old shell, as from the outside it looked pretty mint. But then it is a nova... you never know lol

Ash
26-01-08, 12:19 AM
Cheers Steve. From the out side and inside it was mint... Behind the bumpers and in the bay it needed new panels for want I wanted. Some people would be happy plating it, but it look soo messy it wasn't for me.

It will be a track car, but road legal for weekend blasts, shows and the 'ring

It is stange that about 3 years ago I thought about an engine change, found Dan's spec, copied it (ish) and have now ended up with his shell lol

My orginal idea for the project was to make a mk2 'sport' so I needed to use an orginal engine, so XE was a big no no, but carbs was a big YES :)

lookin good ash.

try and make some notes and pictures if you can on your fifth gear replacement?

Its possible to remove the gearbox casette through the passenger side wheel arch without having to remove anything except the selector housing and the roadwheel. - Thinking about it i guess the gearbox is off the car anyway lol

If you fold up the lip on the bottom of the chassis leg, you can remove the gear cassette.

Liking it Ash. Engine appears to be quality.

lol i like that word 'appears'

Im hoping it will all work fine, but I've got this terible feeling in my stomach that a little bit of sand/dust/metal/wood/etc is going to funk it all up for me

Cheers for the comments, I'm just about to have a 'brave pill' and go tackle a gearbox

Make that three :)

Looking good Ash, its funny you mentioned the piston thing as I did exactly the same thing lol Also realised that I hadn't checked which way I'd installed the oil control rings  Luckily that was during the build so wasn't too much work to undo!

Thanks once again for the comments. Had some more money roll in so I should order the clutch really, it's far to much money but I need it - so its fine  lol

EDIT: Smallblocks are common... right thats it! Vtec engine is going in next week lol

Ash
30-01-08, 10:07 PM
Four now *spits* common as muck lol

@ greg - I offered the standard lower arm up the the R/J'd one and it is correct. Must be to do with where the cut is made and the R/J inserted.

Another small update.

I've removed the engine from the stand to make way for the gearboxes.

http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/7174/30012008377sg7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

This also ment I could fit the lightened flywheel.

http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/5844/30012008378gj5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

To save marking/damaging the new sump I made up a little 'crib' for the engine to sleep in, arrrr lol

http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/1624/30012008379pp8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

and finally the gearbox in the stand, going to wait till the weekend on this and when the gasket set arrives from Vauxhall.

Small steps ;)

Thanks once again for the comments, Craig your welcome round anytime, I've got that rear quarter sat here waiting as well, when your ready :)

Today I thought I'd crack on with the wiring loom and interior type stuff, seeming as I've lost my Hanyes manual again. When I do find/buy one the gearbox will get done.

Started draining oil out anyway:

http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/2804/03022008385uc6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

On with the wiring, I started routing out the loom to see what I could junk/keep/tidy/extend, etc

http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/6485/03022008391oz6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/3017/03022008389hm4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/6696/03022008388qd7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And as always with me an wiring I drew blood :wall: I seriously dont understand it, I can spend all day under a car playing with suspension and big, rusty bolts and Im fine. Soon as a wire is introducted I cut myself :GGRRR: lol

Ditched the speaker loom and a few other silly things, extend the wires for the digidash sender so it runs with the loom now, not though the speedo place.

Once I was happy-ish with that I started fitting the heater matrix. Now I know this is a lightweight track shell, but I will be travelling to Germany in it, so I think im allowed to add a little weight...

No pics of it fitted, because I gave up, how the feck are you meant to put the nut on the drivers side!?!?! over 30mins on my back under the pedals trying to do it and the ******* wouldn't catch! So I smacked it with a socket in my hand a resulted in this:

http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/8468/03022008393dz6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

If that wasn't enough I turned the heater off and the bulb blew in the lead lamp AND as I walked out the garage in a small rage I tripped over a plant pot that had been blown across the garden

Just been sat here staring at my carbs, the rebuild kit and a drawing that doesn't really match, and felt quite dissy. Any how to rebuild carbs gen??? lol

Finally bought myself a third copy of the hanyes manual - going to chain this one to the car I think, keep losing them :wall:

The carb rebuild is a piece of pi**
Just a few screws basically...

Ash
09-02-08, 12:08 AM
yeah, no... I took one apart a long time ago to spray it and can't remember if I put the new jets a stuff in or not (easy to find out I know) Plus the drawing supplied with the rebuild kit isn't very clear and for Type 18 carbs, mine are Type 126, suprising the number of differances.

OK, im being lazy

Ash
10-02-08, 11:33 PM
Well one carb is back together-ish, some parts are very differant tho.

The gearbox has been delayed due to a rather large drinking session on saturday, got as far as removing the diff cover and felt ill lol

Ash
11-02-08, 06:18 PM

Had a busy few days the pass week. Took some time off work and this is the result:

The gearbox was pulled apart to change the final drive ratio's and swap the 5th gear to give me better accelaration and better top speed, which is always handy ;)

There with be a full guide written soon, but this was a 'panic/rush' job so not many pics ATM

http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/5051/17022008411gz2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
pulling apart errr stuff...

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/5675/17022008412nf1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/1464/17022008415ii0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

We did have a hicup that set me back a couple days where one of the lugs snapped off the gear housing and we had to use part of the other gearbox - can you spot which bit??? lol

http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2986/21022008426zg1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

So now i've ended up with an F13CR with a 4.18FD and longer 5th gear :D

And finally this happened:

I picked up my 4 paddle 'custom' clutch and my powdercoated engine mounts and set about fitting the engine (!!!)

First the 'bay was washed down:

and the clutch fitted:

(It's gold - it's got to be better lol)

Next up it was housted up on a rather dodgy engine crane from a well respecced hire firm

http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/3637/24022008478yu6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

and dropped in through the top! No problems

Looks really well slotted in there Ash.

Brake lines are pricey if using braided. Maybe try getting prices from exact in Totnes. Guy used to work for Goodridge who are based in Exeter. I just had some regular flexi's made up by them & got them overnight. All the fittings are removable from the braided pipe as opposed to Goodridges method of sealing them on or using non-reuseable fittings (I dunno).

I've opted to use copper pipe for the front runs & braided to lin the bias valve with the rear copper runs to each flexi on the rear beam.

Keep at it matey.

Ash
05-03-08, 11:28 PM

I wouldnt worry about a dirty beam for now, its the engine bay that draws everyone in at the shows.

This gonna be at PVS?? i'll have to have a nose around if it is. :thumb:

Rolling road day..... lol

Not looking good tbh, I want at least 50miles on it before I get it setup and nearer 500miles before the RR day, plus I still have to tax and insure it and pay for the setup :wall:

EDIT: come to think of it, petrol isin't cheap these days... and I'm going to need lots of it lol

True and the 'bay should do it very well, hopefully the interior will raise an eye brow or two as well, especially for a track car.

It is certainly going to be at PVS, going to try and make as many shows as poss :thumb:

As I bought some vht paint for my manifold and most of it burned off when I started her up! lol
It shouldn't have done.
As CG said, you have to cure vht paint.

On exhausts etc, it cures in use(just try not breathe the fumes...)
It stayed on my old manifold for ages

With the deadline rapidly approaching I got a move on, I think the panic has started to set in now, some of the parts aren't in minty mint condition, but its fine lol

This is how the 'bay is looking now, wired, hosed and servo'd lol

And the dash:

Ash

lol @ dashboard comment - I should be a man about it and not have one really.... or so I keep getting told.

Cool, should be done in time then if you can get the coil loom.

Ash
09-03-08, 12:43 AM
should be, I've found a loom buy the guy hasn't given me an address to send the money yet. If it's not started up on Wendesday, it's going to be unlikely to be there. I want minimuim 50 miles on it before I go and have it setup and nearer 500 before it hits the rolling road.

Still need to sort 't brake lines, thing im going with copper fronts and a single braided to the back and split.

Ash

http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/6661/11032008547hw7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

For those who don't reconise that ^ its a rather funked weber DCOE spindle. Luckly I have friends with spare T40's and spares for them:

http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/820/11032008549dx4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Unfortunally thats from a Solex and Weber don't make them anymore :wall:

So my friends going to machine me one, probably from Ti :D Lots of parts arrive tomorrow to finish off all the annoying little jobs, another mates round to finish the wiring and I need to finish running the fuel hose and mount the Filterking.

Adam

Whilst waiting for random engine parts and wiring to be finished I've made a start on the brakes. I had one copper line still attached to the M/C but in my haste removing it from the red shell I cut the N/S, so I will be visiting a scrap yard very soon to relieve a nova of that hose and some seat runners.

My rear lines turned up from Rally Designs, after a phone call from Lee informing my order was wrong lol A full write up will be written soon in the 'How 2' section. This is what arrived:

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/8459/13032008550tb9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And a basic layout:

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/2028/13032008554yy4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Caliper wise - I'm swapping my knacked, un-matched 2.0 16v item for some reconditioned ones from Vauxhall for the resonable sum of ?80 :) These will be fitted with Mintex 1155 pads and standard GM discs atm.

It was a dark and stormy night, but some where in the depths of Somerset a little nova was being born, slowly but surely...

http://img329.imageshack.us/img329/2035/14032008559rx4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

It already had a heart, but now it's gained its lungs:

OK, spindle still isn't sorted, but I needed to cut the fuel hose to length as it was pissing me off lol

We now have both front brake lines sorted, calipers and 1144's arrive Wedensday. Rear brake line is being a right royal pain in the ass tho!

Steve
16-03-08, 02:31 PM
Nice!! engine bay is looking real good now, not overly keen on the colour for the inlet and carbs but then thats missing the point really! lol

What sort of power are you aiming for?

Adam
16-03-08, 05:16 PM
I like the engine colour scheme, looks cool.
Its going be sweet.
Schedule is proper tight tho! :(

You still needing the Sr dizzy loom?
If you still cant find one, you could make your own up, if you can find anyone that has the right plugs to fit the dizzy/module......
It would only take some simple wiring if you can find the plugs. You only need the module/dizzy ones, as the coil should have two nut/stud terminals that you can put rings on...

Ash
20-03-08, 02:00 AM
Tonight I saw life in the little car, starter span, lights on, dash on, fuel pump on - it was ace!

Had the day off work to go hunting about the local area picking up the final parts needed which included a trip to AC Services, who sorted me out with a battery box, some brake fittings and a filter for my fuel pump. Top quality service!
Then it was back to Yeovil to pick up my brake pads, went for 1144's in the end, dunno why really. And then popped into Vauxhall to pick up my calipers... which they forgot to order!!! They offered me Saturday delivery, not good enough, so offered to drive to the dealer that had them, but thats Bedford where they're made :wall: Matey pulled a few strings as im such a good customer and they WILL be here tomorrow morning :D

Anyway on with the work... it wasn't as simple as it seems here, Ric and I are shot and just called it a day at 1.30am.

http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/6558/20032008572ss6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

R/J gearlinkage is fitted, but fouled the 'box, but sorted now. All the fluids, bar brakes are in. Plus the spindle is back now and fitted. The only jobs to do now are fit the brakes and bleed them, both the battery box down and fit the linkage - easy!

Then we can turn the key and find out if Ric's 'bodge loom' has done the trick!

Apoligies for the **** pics, it's late! More pics tomorrow

CG - Im after a mint SR bumper, paint weighs too much on the GTE ones lol

Everything is currently ready to go, but upon trying to start it, it became obvious I had a wiring problem, this is due to bodging the wiring loom because I was in a rush and either the Royal mail are useless or the guy never sent me the loom I needed. Anyway it's not ready for the RR tomorrow, but I feel I had a fair crack at it.

thanks guys, regarding the skirts tho, I think with an SR (or similar) front bumper they will look good. They kind of exsencuate (sp?) the iconic square arches. I'm not overly keen on how the side just disappears into nothing really. Also just to note they will be sprayed body colour with some form of vinyl strip running down the side, ala ford GT40, etc

One float was FULL of fuel so thats been swapped, rev limiter - well the obvious and the 'box oil is because the first lot is now covering the floor of my garage. Don't worry new GM seals have now been pressed in not hammered lol

Now there all fitted I ran the car down the drive to be picked up on the trailer. Not 30 seconds pass before this happened!

Cheers for the supportive comments yet again. :) SR bumper is on its way ;) The dents on it were there when I bought it :(

New steering wheel
Pick up SR front bumper
Air filters
Sort passanger harness (make 4 point not 3)

Long term:

Respray, new battery tray, sort the dents (rear quarter and roof)

HID lights
Diff
Gaz Coilovers
Seats (Soon)
interior panels
head lights (smoked)
new rear lights
solid top mounts
poss better brakes
carbon and flock dash
stack dash or similar
get the steelies widened
Comp MO's or similar for cut slicks
vinyl
poss door bars
smoothed slam panel

Very long term:

Sorry Scott, just noticed that ^ that is the plan eventually, the grill and bumper combo with the snowplow, but i'd perfer the zender one (Shawn's) or I believe irmscher did one. Either of them I think would match up well with the skirts, but we'll see...

One question, how/why is there one brake line running to both rear brakes....? Wheres the other rear outlet from the mc going???

Also in todays news.....

SHE RUNS!!!! on one cylinder :D lol

Something is up with the carbs, some sort of blockage some where even tho all the jets are new. Suspisions points to the acclerator pump jet system... More up to the minute news updates at the weekend :)

Adam
24-04-08, 08:40 PM
The joys of carbs. lol

Ahh right, i see what youve done now, with the mc. Be a bit worrying if that rear brake pipe ever had a leak though, as you now have no diagonal split system. Unlikely yeah, but possible.

Ash
24-04-08, 11:17 PM
meh, I got a handbrake... and I know how to use it ;) lol

I haven't heard of any problems from 'other people' that run the same setup. The rear want really be doing a lot of braking any way. Thinking on it, it would probably of been cheaper running two lines.... hmmm

craig green
25-04-08, 10:52 AM
re the brakes. You never know until you try it. Who needs diagonally split brakes anyway. Sounds like something FORD would design.

Keep at it Ash.

Ash
01-05-08, 09:51 PM
Carbs sound fooookking ace!

As you may of guessed she runs, but not for long as two of the HT lead fell apart in my hands. This meant I couldn't 'play' with the carbs (or get a video of it running :()

New leads are on order and the car is Tax'd. MOT'd and Insured, hopefully be driving at the weekend :D

Ash
07-05-08, 10:33 PM
As some may have seen I have driven the car, but it hasn't lasted long.... I thought the carbs just needed setting up but on closer inspection the air ways inside the carb are coroded.

Spent my lunch time down the garage (MJ Autos) removing the carbs and taking them to Turnspeed Engineering tomorrow for ultrasonic cleaning

This is getting an all to familiar sight:

Also fitted a new hub with new wheel bearings both sides. I had a problem with one of the brake bolts not doing up tight (shag'd thread)

http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/4483/05052008630jy3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

So much for me bragging Im 98% the stuff I wanted before PV  Still need:

Re-build carbs and setup
New discs
HT leads
Re-MOT it - just for saftey reasons
I want a new red-top battery so the passanger seat will actually go back
Sort the exhaust
Sort the gear linkage
Re-underseal the car - where stuff scraped off, etc in build
Fit SR bumper
Straighten front panel
Get 'dent-man' to look at the rear quarter
Get the tracking and camber done
Probably shoulde buy some Gaz coilovers as there on offer...
Finish the dash
Fit a new steering wheel boss - be rude not to fit a new wheel at the same time

But at least I've driven it now :D sounds ace above 3.5k :D ;)

Right, it's doing my head in now...

YAY or NAY! (http://www.balancemotorsport.co.uk/products.asp?recnumber=78995)

at £440 to my door I don't think I'll ever see them much cheaper, even second hand.... problem is I need to sort out a few other bits on this car and now the daily. Also need some wedge for PV and track days..... but then I 'need' coilovers for track. My current setup is just lowering springs and uprated standard length shocks, which considering the rest of the car, it's a bit of a let down.

As you may of guess, I didn't buy the coilovers as the car wasn't running yet....

Picked it up today to sort out a few more problems before the engine gets setup for the final time.

First Job:

Ever since the engine got oil pressure it's leaked oil from the crank seal area, got the car up on the stands tonite and what a ball ache! Finally got it all stripped down after several cuts, swear works and 60% of my arms covered in oil lol
New bolts arrive at Vauxhall tomorrow, so a good dose of instant gasket and I should be laughing!

Job 2:

First the passanger side diff seal was leaking... sorted that, nice and easy as its in the removable castle nut 'thing'. Now the drivers side one is leaking! These were both brand new seals so it must be down to the monkey that fitted them - oh!

New seal is in my car, just ran out of time to fit it tonite.

Job 3:

One of the carbs is causing a high idle which would seem to point to the butterflys out of line, also the same carb (or maybe the plugs) keep cutting in and out, but haven't bothered starting the engine since due to the oil leak(s) getting alot worse.

To cheer my self up tho I bought a new OMP suede wheel and boss and a set of Spax shocks for Project Enemy (Fiesta) since I lowered it on just springs both rear shock have gone pop, and a contact at work turned up this kit at a very good price ;)

http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/images/CorsicaProduct.jpg
^ That style wheel, but suede and Ti spokes - only needed a boss so I had a horn for the MOT, but it was rude not to lol

Pics tomorrow poss

same (or similar wheel to mine) sounds like your having a right knightmare though mate. Did you get your carbs cleaned up?

Ash
31-05-08, 06:58 PM
Yea, carbs were ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt and..... still don't run right! lol
After about 4 days of on and off trouble shooting I narrowed it down to the new float in the carb fouling on the carb body, either shutting the fuel off compleatly or flooding the carb and then the engine. Hopefully I've just sorted that tho and taking to a rolling road this week! :D

Other little jobs have been done, such as the gearbox diff seal leak, the engine crank seal leak (still not right) fitted new discs and made sure all the butterflys shut nice an tight.

And finally this has arrived and I've decided to make a new dash before PV.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9808/21052008633ie3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Unfortunalty the engine want be run in properly before I get to PV so I can't run down the strip as planned, but theres next time.

the new wheel looks really nice!looks much better than in the other pic.what kind of dash are you using?cut down one?

Ash
31-05-08, 10:09 PM
Got a cut down one atm, but looks really messy and useless. I'll be making one from scratch initally from 3mm hardboard (MDF) and 18mm bracing but will make a mould for a fibreglass or carbon one at a later date. Hopefully with a view to selling some as well. Help cover the cost as well ;)

Just been out in the garage again and it fires up on all 4 on the first turn of the key :D idles not too smooth but I have no way of setting it up.

After a final tweek tomorrow the carbs should be spot on to start tuning. Really like the wheel, but its quite a dish. I'll have to mount the seat much further back now lol

The black OZ F1 cups on there atm are 7"x15" ET37 fitted with 195/45/15 tyres. They have loads of clearance, but I will admit there not ideal. I'm on the look out for some MO's, Prorace 1.2's, TH Mono's, etc for my main track tyres. The OZ's will be for road and wet track.

Cheers Paul, not far off now.

Well not having enough to do all ready I thought I'd make a start on the new dash today. It's all planned out but once I got to the garage I started mincing lol

First job was to get the shape of the screen:

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/9986/img0029fz4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Then try it out for size:

http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/4207/img0033po6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Decide where the clocks are going:

http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/5270/img0037pk7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/1738/img0041si3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Then I could make up the mounting points:

http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/8333/img0039pe2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And final job done tonight was to start mounting the hazard switch and clock:

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/9284/img0049om0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Tomorrow I'll get the routor out and roll the edge over and do the rebate for the facing panel and do the lower panel.

Ash
02-06-08, 10:55 PM
Was a little silly tonite work only on the dash and not the carbs, but hey both need to be done.

This is how the dash was left. Also note the new wheel is now fitted :D

^ Hopefully, dropping it in for the setup tomorrow. Not rolling road sadly :(

Just got in from working on the car since 7.00pm... Kinda went for a test drive. Went very well considering I had to push down to get first, no second or fifth or reverse. Thats now sorted tho. It's running stupidly rich tho, as in i've had to clean the plugs everytime before I start it resently, again its now sorted. Looking forward to tomorrow and getting some miles on it before PV. Hopefully I've got Friday off work to clean and play with it :)

Epic head gasket fail!

Gone between cylinder 3 and one water way. The other 3 cylinders have low compression too....

The nice people at RAC got me home safe tho. Top service.

Also the front number plate fell off on the road side, but thats minor lol

I'll be happy with it when it's done right, You can kinda see in the 'on-tow' pic the black top and red insert. I've got flux suede on the way in the same colours. A mate said it's lotus elise-esque, which is cool :)

Parts for the gasket will be ordered first thing Monday, probably drop it into a mates garage to be done tho, slightly dis-hearted with it now

Sorry to hear it ash, after all that hard work as well. Did you manage to make the show?

Ash
10-06-08, 11:44 PM
I did make the show on Sunday Steve, arrived about 11.30ish then walked a small marathon to the PNG stand and arrived about 12.20ish. lol Dunno how I made it up there as I was soo knackered from the events on Saturday.

Also I just discovered that I left my iPod and sunglasses in the recovery truck, so rang 'em up.
'No, not seen them. Those trucks are like buses, the property in them is anyones for the taking!'

Not happy, but I guess that what you get when you help the driver unload the car and direct him to the petrol station at the end of a hot and tiring day, you forget things.

And to cap the day off I stripped down the engine tonight, expecting just a gap in the head gasket....

http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/9838/10062008676mv3.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

Head appears fine, but will be checked over throughly!

Maybe closer?

http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/8287/10062008680th5.jpg (http://imageshack.us/)

Oh Noes, melted piston FAIL!

Appears to be caused by water slowly seeping in and getting rather hot. Already have new pistons, believed to be cossie/Group A ones. Just a headache and ballache of sorting it out. Don't think it will be at any shows this year, let alone track

Dishearted, but laughing. Its all part of the learning process ;)

Adam
10-06-08, 11:56 PM
NOT good.

Any close up pics of the piston? Any "hole punch like" det marks in the top?
Is the spark plug fine?

Ash
11-06-08, 12:14 AM
No close ups as yet. The piston appears to of melted itself to the liner wall  No other damage to the piston, only what you see.

Spark plug is fine, slightly wet and a bit dark, but within what I'd call 'good'

Haven't looked at the (bast4rd) car recently but found a few photos of the dash, which was finished about 10.15 on the morning of PV08. Still yet to be trimmed properly, but you get the idea

and all the miles its done:

After, what, six months I've finally got most, if not all the parts to sort this problem out in one hit.

Today I collected a 1650 lightened and balanced bottom end, compleate with ARP bolts, recently re-built and only covered 1,000 miles. Thanks to Ryan who actually had to take time off work to remove it for me - cheers mate :thumb:

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/2797/30112008823zy5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Also when the problem happened all the gauges were reading normal, including the temp which should of been sky high. When looking at it the temp sensor is in the inlet manifold, right next to the heater outlet I blocked off. My thoughts are that any temp change would take a while to reach the sensor as there's no flow through there. This problem was solve like so:

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/3577/25112008818oo3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Out with the old

http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/7042/25112008819uq2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
In with the new

Also I'm going to replace the gauge, but don't know with what yet. Other plans during this 'fix' will be seats and possibly new wheels in a very cool colour  and the correct(ish) offset with proper tyres (R888's)

That is all

Had today off work to look for a new car for myself, but also to start cleaning up the nova's new block and paint it. Unfortunatly its roughly -5000C (ok, -1C) in my garage, so didn't bother starting. Also found out Dad has used the cardboard packaging for my inlet gasket for a job on the house, annoyingly it still had the gasket inside when he started chopping it up. Is nothing safe in my garage?

I did however hold the camera still log enough to get some pics of my old block damage.

Ash
07-01-09, 04:44 PM
yea, just outside Swindon on the M4 on the way to PVS. Thought to be due to a blocked main jet in the carb causing the cylinder to run lean and then uber hot resulting in melted piston.

Cheers Simps.

Right, I have this week off work and a nova to put back together.... I think you see the plan ;)

Had to make some room and clean up first which took most of the day in the end, first of the car had to be shifted

Down:
http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt284/graphicgrafter/IMG_0312.jpg

and out:
http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt284/graphicgrafter/IMG_0314.jpg
and parked:
http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt284/graphicgrafter/IMG_0317.jpg

Setup the wireless for some tunes.
http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt284/graphicgrafter/IMG_0323.jpg

First job was to clean the new block down, inside and out:
http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt284/graphicgrafter/IMG_0333.jpg

Compared with the old one :o
http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt284/graphicgrafter/IMG_0319.jpg

This is the only problem with the new bottom end, easily sorted mind
http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt284/graphicgrafter/IMG_0341.jpg

Then got masking up for paint.
http://i620.photobucket.com/albums/tt284/graphicgrafter/IMG_0345.jpg

This is where I finished for the day, but gives me a good start tomorrow as long as the paint dries quickly.

Cheers for the comments. The old man and me built the garage about 5 years ago, or when ever the last scorching summer was. If we thought about it, we would of put a pit in there too. It's a standard double width plus 2 metres to move about/open doors/shelfing

Dad's car is hiding in the corner waiting to be restored too:
