i had the same problem (still do)!lol
it got worse as i revved it too.. so i replaced the shells and it did not help.
i would try that as its not expensive anyway..

replace shells and bearings?
Did the oil light come on?
If the big ends have started to knock i would imagine the crank is fubard im afraid.
If its the crank itself, you might be lucky, but you really need to get it checked.
Trust me on this, im experienced in such matters lol

the oil light didnt come on! as soon as i heard a little rattle/knock i pulled over and towed it home. ive started it to show my mate, left it running for about 20 seconds!
Probably scored the crank journals then.
Re-grind/polish
Or new crank job
Take it out and have a ganders

should be alright, you could probably get away with a set of shells youll need gaskets and bolts and what have you but ull get it all for about 60 quid. finfd out why it happend tho or itll just do it again. if ther was low oil in it, top it up.
its quite expensive to re-grind a crank. id advise you wing in a set of shells and see what hapens

Ill give you 1 guess who did that and then ended up getting a reputation for destroying engines.
give you an idea of price for a crank grind, I paid ?168 for a crank grind, flywheel lighten and heavy duty mains and big end bearings. You'll need new big end and mains bolts too.
A engine swap is probably a cheaper quicker and easier option
