View Full Version : Done my first 12 car Rally tonight ....
.... didn't exactly go to plan !! lol
Managed to get lost god knows how many times, managed to stick the Nova in a hedge and then later on it lost all its oil.
Crash was pretty sh*t tbh, wasn't going that fast loads of crap on the road, turned to get round the bend then went straight on into the hedge, bent drivers side wing, smashed headlight, 1 smashed spot light, scuffed bumper, bent bumper bar & bent the panel under the headlight a bit ... could of been worse.
Then after getting going again we got lost, then noticed there was no oil pressure, front / bottom of the block was covered in oil.
Got towed (14 mile) home, got it jacked up for a look underneath, was leaking from the Turbo oil drain. I've got a Turbo damper that bolts between the block and Turbo (oil drain), and with the down pipe getting bashed on most of the roads we were on its caused the damper / oil drain to come loose.
Reckon it should be ok once its nipped up and has some oil in it.
We ended up coming last with a DNF !!
Still good crack tho, could of been worse, give me summet to do over xmas !!
** I had a video camera strapped to the cage so hopefully caught it all on camera, will have to have a look thru it in the next day or so**

sounds like fun , shame about the damage though :(
Fook me, i cant believe you went rallying in your car. The paintworks way too fresh/clean for that! Lol
Hopefully you spotted the oil pressure in time.

12 car rally's are a good laugh. i have done 3 now.
they are very hard to do, get the clues and plot where you are goign etc while going along.
we have got lost on nearly every 12 car we have done..ha ha

Same comments re the car & using it like that!
Atleast you built it for thrashing & not polishing though.
Look forward to the vids.

My dads just recently stopped using his Mk2 escort on nite rallys because off the slippy conditions and trips through hedges etc lol
He uses a 205 now so he can happily race around as fast as he wants without having to worry about the offs. Great fun but not something to be doing in your pride and joy unless your willing to fix and replace stuff :D
I seen a lad role a e30 m3 on a nite rally so think yourself lucky :thumb:

I'm going to look into doing one of these next year. Gives me an excuse to fit some Rally Giant spotlights to the car too heh heh.

I know what you mean, but i didn't build it to polish all day long, might end up getting a few more knocks as i've joined my local motor club, hopefully gonna be doing a couple of Sprints and Hill Climbs next year.
Managed to get a pair of wings and a headlight off a guy at work, also blagged another guy to paint them for me, and got some thin copper 'gasket' sheet to cut some new oil drain gaskets, so should have it sorted fairly cheaply.
Had a look thru the footage today, some of its not to bad but unfortunatly the battery died about 10 -12 mins before we crashed so missed it
Gonna get a mate to stick on the computer and edit it abit, i'll post it up once it done (not sure when its gonna be?).
Was good crack doing it definatly worth having ago at one, sorting the clues / plotting the route / following the route is a lot harder than you'd think as well, definatly have to swot up on map reading / route plotting for next year !!

sounds like you still had a laugh tho and thats what its all about

Which event was it RICH ?
I've done a couple in and around the lakes/lancashire area - in a trusty Scirocco GT2 !
Good to see it's getting used properly too
It was just an annual thing that work has every year, was organised with west cumbria motor club as far as i know, was just on OS Map (Landranger) 89 covered about 100 miles in total, had 7 stages. I only managed 2 1/2 !!
Wasn't that bothered about the crash tbh as we kept going ok but was a bit gutted that we had to stop due to no oil pressure, reckon we'd of had a 1/2 decent chance of winning our class (Novice), there was the option of having a pre-marked map for the Novices but thought that was a bit pointless, The expert class was pretty competitive, the guys who won have been doing about 2 - 3 12 Cars a month lately plus there was Matthew and Malcolm Wilson (Rally aces !!) doing it so don't think we'd of faired to well against them.
rich, your mental! lol. i would happily let you kick my cars head in round there and i can have your nova... lol
sounds like a really good laugh though! this with wigton motor club? id had ideas about having a go at this too
There was the option of doing it in the old Diesel 106 but thought it would be more interesting in the Nova, Lol !!
Nah not WMC but pretty sure they do run them, think its mainly over the winter months ... it is harder than you think !!
Think we had an 'easy' introduction to doing them as it was just folk from work doing it, most were just doing it for a laugh but it was still pretty competitive.
Could do it it any old car really, its more having the maps sorted (spot heights / grid references ect ... clearly marked), map light, potis, romer .... and knowing how to read a map propperly helps a bit to !!
