a bit of advise on a parcel shelf

i've started building a real parcel shelf and have decided to do something a little differet!

Basically i want to have the parcel shelf "stealth" but its prob going to be about 5/6" deep with multi changer/amp/6x6's in. (sort of like a box/tray)

im hoping the multi changer will be mounted dead center (facing the rear and the 6x9/amp around it.

The multi changer will be flush with the edge of the shelf allowing easy access to it (boxed in by mdf), So there's "easy" access when the boot is opened but not viewable when shut.

Also when the boot is shut the bottom of the shelf will sit under my rear wiper stopping any chance on shelf being stolen!!! (in theory)

Still with me :o

as the top of the shelf is only going to be carpeted and mdf around the out side of it - do you think it will overheat (this is my only worry).

It sounds like there's going to be alot of weight on the shelf. What you're best off doing is drilling small holes in the Mdf around the amp with the carpet concealing them, sort of like the same way a stealth shelf works with the 6x9 holes concealed by the carpet. Or you could wire up a computer fan next to the amp. You can get loads of different sizes.

The weight doesn't really matter! its got v-stong supports i may well get one of those fans....maplins here i come!!

My dad has a few of those cpu fans from work so if you struggle to get 1 let me know and i will c wot i can do.

Yeah cheers i think ill make it up then see what the breathablity?? of it is as the top will be completly open with a little lip of about 2/3 inch all round apart from the carpet that is ill see cheers

has this ever been done before or has Anyone else done this??

a m8 of mine (in his fiesta) did a similar mod - he had just the top of the cd changer visible (hidden by an accoustic carpet flap) so he could load the cd cartridge by inserting it into the shelf (if that makes sense). To make is secure, knowing that ppl knew his car and the amount of ice he had, he drilled 2 holes at each end of the shelf (made of mdf) and fitted security bars! These were steel bars that were inserted through the holes, secured with pad locks from the tops and then bolted to the boot floor. Totally over the top but ironically it survived 2 attacks! He lost 2 rear windows mind.

Yeah nice idea about the carpet over the cd changer but i think the rotary arm should sort that, the same goes for the bolting it down the bottom part of the box should slide under the rotary arm

making the shelf actually larger than the exit point (if you know what i mean) - im confused! :?

Ive given up on that idea!!! :lol: i started making it then realised the bass is going to prob make it jup all over the place so im going to fit it to the back seat.
