steady on there a 40 inch alloy lol,
The 195 bit is the width of the tyre, the 50 is the profile size (i.e. 50 - 50% of the alloy ) and the 40 as you put it is the diameter of the alloy.

195 is the width
50 is the tyre wall height ( the profile )
15 is the wheel size ( diameter )
50 is the tyre wall height ( the profile )
Nearly but not quite, the 50 is called "the aspect ratio" As already explained by phil.

I know its not 50mm high, just trying to break the format down so its understandable to the lad:thumb:
Tthe 50 is the profile size (i.e. 50 - 50% of the alloy )
Percentage of the tyre width and not alloy width. :p
195/50R15
195 is the width of the tyre in mm
50 is the height of the tyre as a percentage of the width
R15 the size of the rim that the tyre fits in inches
and I don't blame you for being confused. Why the tyre measurement uses mm,% & " all in one go is beyond me!
Thats the most common way. Slicks are different again!
Here's a page that explains it in a little more detail - http://www.which.co.uk/reports_and_campaigns/cars/reports/running_a_car/accessories/Tyres/Tyres_essential_product_574_70980_3.jsp
