hi all me and a few mates are building a shared track car, just wondering what you would buy, (not just bloody novas lol) we were thinking about a metro gti with slight damage/ off the road?

what would you recomend to buy/ build on a shoe string? and what would you do to it?

well id have a nova , but other than that 106xsi?

Other than that go big and RWD. Carlton/senator/5series.

In order of personal preferance:
Corsa B,
Nova,
Mk2/3 disastra.
Fiesta,
106/saxo

A metro would disintegrate if you hit anything, put your own safety first, then stopping, cornering, power. Even a tatty nova/astra SR with a cage and some good tyres+brakes will allow some good fun, until you can afford to make it faster+better handling.

is that going by cheapness lol it isnt really going to be a serious thing just a bit of weekend fun

Depends on what you can get hold of really. You'll see poverty spec corsas, and cav sri's going for ?4-500 each if you have a good look. By the time you've added a cage, tyres, servicing, discs+pads, suspension, other bits and bobs, seats and harnesses you'll get a c20xe corsa done for under ?3k if you scrounge around and look hard enough.

Cars ?1000
Cage+fitting ?600?
Tyres ?200?
C20XE conversion mounts ?80 at chris astley
Discs and pads ?50-200 depending on what you buy and from where
seats and harnesses ?150 used to ?600 new, each
Suspension ?200 used to ?500ish new for gaz coilovers
polybushes ?50
exhaust adaptation ??

metro with a 1.8 VVTi lump from a tomcat ;)

106/saxo/ax 1.6 16v

205 1.9 GTi/Mi16

civic EG/K - depending on budget

Fiesta mk 3 :D - much better handling than a nova (not hard) capable of taking big power. 2.0 zetec, loads of options - just try and find one without rot ;)

I'd also vote for the 205 1.6gti - 1.9 is said to be a bit of a boob handling wise, and the 1.6 has better gear ratios iirc.

Mi16 would be nice, but you're looking at ~?2k for a decent one, plus if you crash you die lol Would have thought a decent 106 would be quite expensive as well.

S13 would probably be my first choice for a cheap track nail though.

Especially if its an imported, unloved, older 2.0 st205

I'd be thinking Jap for a trackday car if you wanted straight-out-of-the-box fun.
Possibly a 2.9 Granada engined Sierra with a MIG-spec diff? They don't weigh much at all once stripped out.

Depends which one, the ST202 is a 173bhp 2.0 16v N/A but a bit lardy. Can pick up early ones for ?1-2k.

SS3 is the choice for handling as it has the superstrut suspension, but not all that common and will usually command an >?3k price tag.

ST182/3 is cheap but not as powerful and just as lardy

205 is the turbo one, you're looking at well over ?3k for an old ranted one - I know they sell for less, but those are best avoided even for track use. No point spending ?2k on it, then the fig8s failing and your front wheels falling off...

Renault 21 turbo

Peugeot 405 MI16

Alfa 164 V6 (best V6 going)

Think touring car. Hatches are fun but big cars corner faster.

Last but not least an Astra GTE 16v with sorted handling.... + baffled sump & some slicks, with a cage. Awesome!

Volvo's are also worth a look. The old ones are RWD and i'm sure there are some quite easy engine conversions. Plus if you crash it you will be perfectly safe ;)
