View Full Version : flywheel lightening
going to be having my flywheel lightened by an engineer by me.
they wanted to know any tolerences that can be taken off??
any ideas or is there somewhere i can find out?
also has anybody got any images of there lightened flywheel?
thanks for any help.:thumb:
Hmm, if they dont know entirely how much to take off, i dont know if i'd trust them doing it.
You only really want a proper automotive engineer doing flywheel lightening, as a bit too much material taken off, and it could end in disaster(seriously)

I think my 1.3SR flywheel is @ 4.5kgs, but not as radically machined as that!
Looks good, got a pic of the other side?

I had my 1.6 one lightened (still have it) however only have it done by someone that has experience & does them regularly.
If it gives out, you are looking at a buzz saw slicing up your gearbox bellhousing & ripping into the car & maybe hurting a passenger. Think between the legs!

its hard to say how much to take off. obviously the more taken off of the outer edge of the flywheel the more lighter the rotating mass. however you can over lighten a flywheel. if not done correct they can shatter. perhapse you could use a flywheel off a smaller engined nova, im not sure if a 1.2 flywheel is lighter than a 1.6 but would be worth a look see.
