whats the difference between a 1.6 16v ecotec and the earlier engine?
How do you tell the difference?
Ive been told that the earlier one is a far better engine.is this true?
also does the earlier engine have the EGR bollox?
cheers ash
Well first of all there both ecotecs.
The early ones have a black plastic top inlet, no egr stuff and a afm. Late ones have a map sensor and alloy inlet.
Power difference aint noticeable on the road. The engine itself is no better, both have the same potential.

cheers. noticed you got one what they like to fit and wire up also whats it like removing/fitting head once engine in
Easy to fit and wire up.
Its much easier do any work on a 16v with the engine removed, but pretty much anything CAN be done with it still fitted.
earlyer 1.6 16v are gsi lumps from a corsa have a better round ported head where as laster modle IE 1.616v sport had trianger ports. cam and gar box are btter on corsa gsi modle rather than one out of a astra and maybe the vec
According to SBD the traingular port heads are the best ones.
i think they only every built a high spec engine with one port never back to back tested them.
sorry to post high jack but they just built a 1.4 to 251bhp N/A spec

am i right in thinkin that if ya get the sport engine out of corsa, tigra, astra or vec do you need the key and ignition barrel n all that where as with the gsi engine you dont?

The earlier engine doesnt require the key for the imobiliser aswell
Only the early gsi's were c16xe's. Later GSIs shared the engine with the sport model(x16xe), and had the immobiliser system.
Vectras/Astras are a different engine to the corsa sport/tigra too, Lol.

you can get the x16xe's in astra's too ;)
but most of x16xel
Can you??
Ive never seen one.
Yes you can, but the head on the X16 XEL is rubbish.
The engines with the best heads(early Corsa Gsi's) have the code 90472726 marked on the head, above the exauste manifold.
The valves are the same size as the XEL's but the inlet ports are far bigger.
I spoke to Steve from SBD and he did say that there is a head on a newer Corsa, that had triangular ports and was as good, if not, better than the Gsi one. But unfortunatly he couldn't tell me the code of it at the time.

C16XE is best bet IMO, though as said, theres not much in it.
XEL is best avoided. A friend had an Astra Sport with one of these & it was quite miserable IMO.

The XEL head is the one with the traingular ports ;)
