Anyone done one yet? and fitted it to a nova, i know Ad's has got the N/A Engine but fancied turbo'in it and fitting it in the near future. All help is helpful, thank you.

So it's gonna be easier and cheaper to turbo an 8v?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, Start saving me thinks.

regal do a complete turbo kit for them , 4 grand though lol

atleast they are availiable though

Wheras on the 8v you can do it cheaply on the std management (upto 8psi boost), you cant really do it with the later types of management. So you'd need a crappy 5th injector etc. Still not cheap.

To do it properly, you'd be spending 2 -3 grand easy. Its all bespoke & custom parts really, like manifolds, pistons, management & mapping etc.

Do itto a 2.0 8v for best results on the cheap.

So how much would i look to spend on doing it on a 1.6 8v then?

No idea, depends how many strings you can pull, where the turbo comes from etc.

Have a read in projects on www.homemadeturbo.com (http://www.homemadeturbo.com)

Cheers Craig for all the help. Guessing i'll need a GSI tank, lines and loom aswell as the engine to go in the 1.2?

turbo the 1.2... :D

Have a read in projects on www.homemadeturbo.com (http://www.homemadeturbo.com) Awesome site to look at that.
Shows how people adapt std exhaust manifolds etc.

Depending how much work you put in/whether you fancy getting involved with diy mapping etc, you could turbo a 1.6 16v for cheap cheap.
Adapt the std manifold, spacer plate/skim std pistons, keep the std upper inlet, cheap scrapyard turbo(T25)/boost hoses/ic.
Megasquirt, and then spend out on the mapping.

Id bet money that you could do it for ?1000-?1500.

A guy on mig has had 245bhp from a 1.6 16v ;)

Fancy doing it too Ad?

Adam

I want to see it done by someone.
Personally id rather be putting the cash towards "other" things not involving nova's atm.

And if i decided spend some cash id just fit a boring Let tbh lol

You gobber!
I'm liking the idea of the 1.6 8v atm, what brake they run etc? Easy to get bit's for? Pistons, ARPs?
Use a T2?

Adam

Wont need arp's if staying at the standard rev limit.
Could use a t2, or t25.
150hp is a easy target.

How hard is it to get hold of everything else? Will i need to get stand alone management to run a good boost?

Adam
20-11-07, 03:43 PM
Well, you can run 5-8psi on the standard management, jsut by upping the fuel with a dual rate regulator or tricking the ecu into injecting extra fuel.

The hardest thing find at the minute is a turbo exhaust manifold.

Would regulator's would i need? recirc valve? Is there an engine i can nick it all from or is 90% of it "hand" built

Any good?

Adam

No, it has to be a regulator than can change its pressure when the engines on boost.

That on Ebay is just a std regulator off a xe/let engine.

O okie pokie, bit new to this atm.

We keep saying it but if you have to ask, you stand little chance of doing it tbh.

My advice is;

get a rebuilt engine,
put it on an engine stand,
remove cyl head & sump,
figure out & measure for manifold with the turbo you are using,
measure for turbo to oil return in sump,
plumb in oil return & feeds etc

& so on. You will need a solution for the de-compression of the cylinders. Work out what breathers need re-routing etc from booost side of throttle.

Find a viable intercooler to use. Configure it witin bumperspace etc & make up boost hoses & elbow pipes etc.

With the engine in place you will also need a custom exhaust downpipe from the turbo's wastegate to your existing system.

There is so much missing from the above, but it should begin to guide you in the right direction & the best place to start (rebuilt short motor & a stand).

By a book is my advice....

not the book I was thinking of but....

Where's the best place to get a new set of Forged piston's that'll drop the CR, how much will i look at paying roughly? Any other bit's i could do with to lower CR. I know there's a spacer but not 100% happy with the idea. Guessing it just run's off the standard inlet? just with inductiuon pipe's and vacuums moved?

Is it gonna be a good idea to get a T2 from Ebay and get it rebuilt?
Ad, the regulator, Guessing you can get these from anywhere? just look around for a boost adjustable pressure regulator? (Best way i could describe it)

Thanks for the book link, gonna be buying that me thinks, just for a bit more of an understanding.

No one I know of lists any smallblock pistons suitable to lower the C/R.

You'd have to persuade someone to run off a custom set. Group buy?

MVAUX were doing them but the site is defunct.

I have pretty much all the parts needed to turbo an 8v :D even a turbo manifold ;)

Skim the standard ones down,Lol.
Or spacer plate

OR, one think i looked into is C16NZ pistons, afaik they are quite "dished" and the engine runs a lower compression than a 16se, might be worth looking at, as 16nz's are in scrapyards everywhere.

velosmotorsport used to produce some silly engines but they have gone under since and i think the engines has a 10 min lifespan. they were selling a 197bhp 1.4 16v at one point
