Do they have an internal or external wastegate? Ivebeen trawling the net for the last hour or so, even been on the Garrett site and drawn a blank.

Internal, should be able to see the penny valve that opens and shuts at the exhaust outlet.

I'm going off the fact that the standard T2 and the uprated T25 I had on my 5 GT Turbo were both internally gated, usually only the bigger turbos that use external gates.

I may take that off your hands TBH, but not yet, as im planning on sorting the Oil seals on my standard T2 (ex R5 GTT item) and using that as a "development" kinda kit so to speak.

But if that goes well, ill be in contact lol

EDIT: Just added some pics of mine to my thread in Club too. Also, i take it the oil seals ar'nt a pig to change either?

Not that bad - the issue is rebalancing the impellor etc.

Looksey in your other thread!

Is that a specialist job? Or something i could do at home?

Specialist job as have to spin the turbo at some riduculous speed.

There not difficult to rebuild tbh, you could always rebuild it yourself and then send the CHRA off to get balanced.
Usually you'll balance the shaft wheel and compressor wheel seperatly when its in bits but cant see it being a prob on a road car tbh, deffinatly worth getting the CHRA balanced tho. See if you can get the torque settings for the 4 back plate bolts, lock nut ect ...

CHRA = ???

Im not a turbo guy Rich, im more carbs and cams lol so this is quite knew to me as i only minimal, and specs for works turbo's for Ford's etc

Centre Housing Rotating Assembly (technical name) !! lol
Basically the Turbo without the housings on, sure if you sent it to some where like Turbo Technic / Turbo Active ect ... to get balanced, shouldn't cost anymore then about ?40 tbh ?? No more than an hours work !!

Oh kewl, for that kinda money ill let them do it lol

Right, got the T2 here now, and TBH its fcuked lol

Aswell as the oil seals supposidly gone, theres a few mm of movement in the shaft :( so whats cheaper, a T2 of eBay or a recon?

EDIT: Been qouted ?210 including vat/pickup & delivery by www.turborepairs.com (http://www.turborepairs.com)

Only thing is, thats the minimal price, thats for "Bearings/seals overhaul" on Garrett T2, T25, T28, T3, T35, T4, GT15, GT17, GT20, VNT

If you get it professionally reconditioned then you know for sure that its good :thumb:.

True yes, but this is more of an experimental turbo conversion to start with, so i may just use one of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Garrett-T2-T25-T28-Repair-kit-rebuild-turbo-GENUINE_W0QQitemZ220135870529QQihZ012QQcategoryZ72 205QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem) and see what happens

T2's run on a journal bearing - film of oil, so there will appear to be a bit of play side to side, and in and out, when theres no oil pressure, surely cant be a few mm play in / out tho ?
Has there been any rubbing on the compressor housing from the compressor wheel ? same with exhaust side, if theres no rubbing then you'll probly be ok, only other things to wear really are the grooves where the piston rings sit, but pretty they'd be ok tbh, unless its been absolutly thrashed.
If its just for an 'experiment' then just get a rebuild kit and do it yourself, mark where the compressor wheel sits in relation to the shaft wheel and mark where the locknut was and the balance 'shouldn't' be that far out, not exactly an ideal way to do it tbh but even if it does have a slight im-balance it'll last and work long enough to see if the whole project is gonna work, if it does then you could always get it balanced at a later date.

A replacement t2 is definently the cheaper option if its fooked, obviously as long as the replacement isn't worn too,Lol.
