View Full Version : Cambelt placement

Just fitted a new cambelt (and waterpump) on my E16SE and it sits a little far out away from the engine. This means the plastic casing will now not fit over without scrubbing on the belt itself. It's the 104 tooth belt tensioned by the waterpump.

Any ideas?

I've not encountered that before, does it look too wide on the water pump pulley? I take it you've tried pushing the belt in a bit then running it up again

No it doesn't look too wide for the waterpump pulley, but it's all the way over as far as it can go too. I tried pushing the belt on at the top and running it again in the hope it would straighten out but it didn't - you reckon I should take the bottom pulley off again and push it on all the way round?

I reckon you should measure it up with the old one.
We bought an industrial toothed belt recently from a bearing supplier. it appears the length & tooth type is pretty standard, but the width is the only variable, the parts supplier may have some faulty stock....

Good idea, just ran out and checked and they're the same width though.

I've just pushed the belt further on all the way round (crankshaft, camshaft and water pump pullies) and turned it over by hand and the belt automatically moves to the outside within the first rotation. I guess that's where it wants to sit, however I'm worried it'll constantly rub on the plastic cover.

Dunno if this is related? Please diagnose it anyway lol

Hmm, id say that noise is the belt rubbing the cover(s)
Remove the covers and see if the noise goes.

If not, the belt may be too tight.

Did the waterpump look identical? Perhaps its sitting slightly too far out from the block, meaning the sprocket is sitting further out, pushing the belt further out.

^^^ exactly what i said to him on msn fella about the rubbing lol

I've removed the front covers and had a poke but can't seem to cease the noise. I could try loosening the belt I guess but you can already twist it 90 degrees along the long edge.

Waterpumps are identical apart from the new one has no shield, which may keep the plastic cover off the moving parts?

Belt tension is fine then,hmmm.

Weird

Stripped it all down again and refitted the bugger. Now it doesn't seem to make a noise at all. Weird but solved so I don't care anymore lol

Did you change the tension any?
Does the belt still sit in the same place?

Belt's in the same place, unsure if the tension was changed at all though. Meh, it's working and hasn't fallen off so it's all good. lol
