Yeah standard X16 manifold, 2" straight through exhaust and cone filter, not going mad on this motor as I intend to turbo the spare X16 I have using Corsa VXR internals and turbo setup.

Hi,
I took my Nova to Shakespeare County Raceway yesterday for a few runs (managed 8 runs)
Bit disappointed with my time and even more so my trap speed, but could have been worse I suppose! Not been drag racing for over a year so was a little rusty.
60ft = 2.220
330 = 5.913
660= 8.85590
mph1 = 83.66
990 = 11.287
1/4 mile = 13.45073
MPH2 / Trap speed = 107.33MPH
The rest of the time I was getting 104/ 105 and 106 mph.
NEED MORE POWER! :)
PS: kept getting whooped by big power scoobies and skylines / supras... :(

It's a LET (Rickardo's old car / chequered flag on the roof and bonnet) - Frontera intercooler, boost is at about 0.8 ish bar in 5th gear from what I can make out
It's upposed to be running 247bhp but not sure if it was making quite that on the day - maybe more like 220 / 230.
Was a very warm day to start with and I was only trapping 104 and 105mph
Then as the day went on, I seemed to get quicker trapping 106 and 107+ , it seemed a bit peppier. Maybe it was the cooler air?
Running normal tyres, normal pressures etc.
I think with a perfect launch on the day (2 seconds? could have scraped a 13.2) as it was my best was 2.2 which is not great but a lot better than my first go ... 2.7!!!!! :O
All the scoobies and skylines were getting 1.7 and 1.8 off the line so I didnt have a chance. Nearly caught a poxy Scooby RB5, wish it was a half mile for that one would have got him!!!! He got 12.8 @ 105.6 or something.
I recorded the runs with my camera, but unfortunately only got my first two **** runs before ran out of storage on the ****ty camera. I'd like to smash it for missing my better runs!!!

Get some 888's on there and let them down to about 8-10psi, warm them right up before a run and you'll knock that time right down imo
you want to be aiming for aty least 2.0 60foot with 888's, do you have a diff?

Yeah will try those tyres, got them on my Astra Turbo, very good. Just standard diff AFAIK I assume that would be an open diff ?
Here is my video - sadly only caught the first two runs, which were ****e, my worst ones.
first one cant get it into 3rd, then on the 2nd run do a pansy arsed start.

if you decide to buy a diff i would recommend a plated diff if you mainly do drag racing! if you like the road and track days you best off with a quaife.

Not into locked diffs if thats what you meant.
My old skyline with 360bhp had a drifting welded diff, and I got 14.4 @ 109.7mph !!!! Awful launches every time and it clunked round corners and skipped.
Cheers!

no no not fully locked, you can have what spec you want from plated.....just about anyway and they work much better from what i have seen and felt.

I agree dave, my plate diff on my old G40 was awesome for dragging...
ATB are deffo a track diff, not great for the strip, in FWD anyway..
diffs are always a good thing :thumb: but i will disagree with one point, the plated format is by far the best for a track orientated car. Quaife in my eyes is more of a road/occasional track/occasional qtr type diff. But for anything more permanent its got to be plate all of the way.
Anyone who claims the atb is defo a track diff should really drive with both and in varying conditions for the ultimate test, then make an assumption :thumb: (if you havent lol) .
when i ran the quarter in my old baby 8v the diff was no real gain at all imo, but then running low 14's is nothing compared to some of you guys so it's probably all relative to the cirmustances :) .

diffs are always a good thing :thumb: but i will disagree with one point, the plated format is by far the best for a track orientated car.
I have run both on various cars, although not in a Nova...
Plate gave me nearly 0.4 on the strip, most an ATB ever gave me was 0.2, but granted that was on diff cars...

A ATB didn't really do me any joy with a LET on the strip, wheel spin through 1, 2 and a bit jumpy in 3rd! but its horses for course
David.

ive been told that a plate diff can be terrible for a fwd car on track, and the reasons make sense to me
for a vehical to turn both wheels need to be travling at diffferent speeds, a plate diff stops this and will make both want to turn at the same speed this was my understanding why it can make fwd cars just want to understeer.

i can imagine it will all depend on the ramp angles of the plated diffs

I cant be arsed to play the 'ive been told' game lol we both know you know your stuff in general. Having run the plate variety over the last 5/6 years i base my views on my experience, i'm no tech head as such, but i know what works. My last 2 builds have told the whole story through pictures/movies and obviously at club events for all to see and even have a go of as my previous build had more pilots than a 747 lol lol
Your more than welcome to research my build threads and see for yourself, be it this one or the last as its all there to see minus any, what did you call it, understeer?? lol lol lol :thumb: :thumb:

I used to have a rev 2 mr2 turbo, it was pretty much standard, nice cars, very good for launching, shed loads of grip.
I think I got 14.3 @ 95 ish in mine back in 2004 ... did boost it up before I sold it but never raced it in the end.
Wouldn't mind another one tbh, rev 3 with a big turbo can be found cheap (450ps +)

They are lacking a bit top end, only managed two terminals over 100mph whereas most of the other cars I were up against were managing more. Going to fit a metal headgasket over winter and go for more boost I think.

Just bog standard mods really, boosting under one bar, filter, exhaust, frontera FMIC, some 3 stage selectable map chip, which doesnt seem to do anything when you turn the switch - I leave it on stage Zero!???
No fuelling mods, it's supposed to be running 240bhp, but I'm only trapping 108.9mph absolute tops, mostly in the 107's so I think it may be running a tidgy bit less? guessing 230ish.
I should be well over 113 mph if I get true stage 2 power 270/280bhp?

No not relay mine did 105 at SCRW last year, tough you have some good 60ft times that suggest with you terminals your times should be more like 12's
my v6 ran 102mph in my 1st ever run lol

Aint no way my car getting in the 12's without an uber launch, drag radials, sub 2 second launch?
Thats the domain of rwd and 4x4 mostly without serious skill/fettling! :).
I'm only running about 230bhp I reckon, so with a bit more uumph and proper stage 2, I think I should scrape the 12's pretty easy so long as I get the magic 2.1 launch again.

Maybe mine's only making 204bhp / standard power then, maximum I ever trapped was 108.92mph...

Mine is a wheel figure so flywheel is 240.2 according to the rollers but thats a calculated figure and both figures will vary between rollers! I have seen mine at 280 before but its not believable!!
My mk1 MR2 turbo ran 13.4 @ 100 mph with 280bhp so no idea how some of these times make sense but they are obviously right. That was a 2.0 60ft time!
Obviously weight comes into it somewhere but a really rusty mk1 MR2 isn't that heavy!

Lee tbh i think luck and maybe a tail wind was on my side that day as all other runs were 13.7 13.8s around 101-103mph
And as i posted on my wip i whent last weekend an there was 12-15mph head winds, so my bests were 14.0 @ 99.9mph
But least they were cositant an all other guys run times were down by around or more the hath a second too, so not just me.

I raced an Mr2 turbo rev3 at york, it was very nice and had a big front mount intercooler.
He did a best of 13.0 @ 107. something .... I asked him about the power and he said about 280ish, I think he was running more like 320bhp I don't think he had a clue as he had just bought it! I was only just reeling him in when I got grip.
My old mr2 turbo rev2 with about 225 (standard ish) did 14.3 @ 95mph
My mk1 MR2 turbo ran 13.4 @ 100 mph with 280bhp so no idea how some of these times make sense but they are obviously right. That was a 2.0 60ft time!

RE: headwinds, interesting point... There was a pretty strong headwind blowing about 15/20 degrees off the runway centreline (20mph I woud say as it was freezing!). Possibly makes a difference with a brick shaped nova. ?
I know I got 104.5mph at the beginning of the day, and I think the wind was stronger then. Towards the end of the day the wind dies down... then I was trapping 107/108.

i managed a 14.92 on a c20xe nova standard tyre pressure on budgets full trim at york at 90.8 mph, not the most impressive time but it held its own against other cars in its class
david dixon
09-05-11, 11:43 PM
yeah i noticed the 15/20 mph head wind at york too, it slowed our N/A time down by .2 but we still managed to run a 12.4 with only a 50 shot of gas so i'm guessing that would work out at 12.2 if the head wind wasn't there.

This car should be in the 12s, i ran it at the pod only running 7psi of boost (had an extra blue rag stuck in the new pro alloy intercooler that was just fitted restricting flow and boost) and i ran around that time, with new tyres yoko a539 if i remember.
Yeh, 108mph terminal is 12s if you can hook up well. I ran a 12.8@109 a few years back. And im useless at launching lol

Yeah i reckon it will no problems, ive not had her out much so still getting used to it, the tires where fairly worn and only road going tires. Im going to stick some R888's on her just trying to find some wheels that will fit over the calipers! as the 16's catch ever so slightly so can only imagine it being worse with the chunky tires.
It never once scraped when i had it with the yokos, i do remember Darren put those tyres on then it started to catch front wings, i personally would have changed those tyres and put on a more suitable tyre, failing that raised the front slightly. i also used to run Uniballs intead of ball joints, dont no what happened to those, also a sytec cleanable fuel lilter?
Might see you at the pod next year be nice to see it going up the strip again, but hopefully i will be in a car capable of 9.5s.
Oh will get those gears sent when i get a min.

It actually scrapes on the rear under hard cornering i think i may have a play with the suspension and stiffen the rear up a bit, they may have softned and could possibly need a refurb as i suppose they have been on the car a while.
Stu i keep meaning to come and see you, i havent fitted the wideband yet, need to weld a boss a bit further down the pipe for the lamda and then ill pop over. I am thinking about taking it to track and road but not sure if there will be any point without mappable management?

and yes its on ball joints now dont know why anyone would of changed those? the fuel filter was relocated when Darren fitted a new fuel pump I belive (see pic)

Same place fella :thumb: Bullet filter still there aswell, it can be dismantled and cleaned, in the box of reciepts there should be 2 dowels that slide in the fiter holes on the opening end, a screwdriver or equivalent can be used to screw open using the dowels, propably never been done in around 5 yrs:confused:

Get it on a weight bridge Hobbit, interesting see what it actually weighs. Be amazed if it was near 800kg tbh.
Good 1/4 times though! Especially with a dodgy clutch.
the dyno guys had the vehicle weights there as well today
Clutch has fixed itself, guess it just needed some abuse to bed it in... (yes I know that makes no sense lol)
it needs weighing with the hobbit in place to get the correct running weight
