insurance is shite. i am in the same situation as u and direct line were the cheapest for me and that was for a standerd nova. the price was.............?1200. yep ?1200 on me dads name it was ?350 but no 'no clames bonus' will come you way if you do it that way  . my advice :?: do it on ya dads for a year and then start over under your own name. as for kits andd wheels and stuff i dunno yet  . hope this helps

sucks don't it :(

The insurance for my 1.2 was 1200 for the first year on me own, If I remember rightly, in that time I didn't even bother with mods.....!!!!

I got me wheels for me 18th birthday, and me insurance was up then too, it went down to about 820 I think and was an extra 60 for the wheels so was 880. (the car was lowered too but they didn't know about that) 5 months in to that policey, I had a grands worth of body kit and a grands worth of re-spray sorted... I rung the insurance company (the car was de-locked, and had boot smoothed, also alarm fitted, The body was front rear bumpers, skirts spolier mirrors etc etc with a metalic re-spray) it went up 27quid over the 7 remaining months.... :P  :o

as i was paying monthly that was an extra 3.80 a month.... perfect!

That was all with direct line, 18 with 1 years no claims, I Am now 19 2 years no claims, everything listed...... 1.6 16v bodykit respray wheels brakes suspension etc all for 680.... I love Liverpool Victoria.....

i just wanna say thanx for everyones help n i think i worked out me cost.
i reckon if i go with direct line with a 1.2 with kit and wheels it should work out at ?1300 with kit and wheels, and probably with an approved alarm system.i wont mention nethin else.i dont wanna have to claim for theft of my alloys so ill have to keep guard of em with a bar in me hand.
thing is i think 17 yr old birds get insurance a lot cheaper. (bastards)

oh yeh and space monkey thats a lotta shit u got yaself into there. i thort i was unlucky.

cheers

If you don't declare any mods its as good as being uninsured.

Don't come near me if thats what you've done.

Insurance companies are thieves, when i had an accident that WASNT my fault they stole my no-claims bonus, my quotes varied from ?4500 to ?972, where can they justify this???? my car is a 1600 16v GSI, de locked, cat 1 alarm, 15" alloys, and a declared ?2k system (now removed) and i am 21 with 1 accident (ggrrrr) 3 points and mine was ?972 with Adrian Flux. they were the cheapest by about ?300

They don't have to jusitfy it thats the point....

Cause insurance is a legal must, they know they can get away with charging extortionant amounts of money cause at the end of the day you will have to pay it.... the cheapest quote you'll find is the company with the best market re-search team, those that can find out the cheapest quote for certain individuals and make sure there price is lower but enough to make sure they are making a substanial profit....

Only there not, cause when people have accidents they claim all they can and more.... ohh I have wipe lash when a milk float hits you at 5mph from behind...

theres no point in complaing, the best way to go about insurance is be honest, and ring around every single company find the best quote... the ring round them all again, most will soon drop there price once they find out they are not the cheapest

Oiiiii

Im in same position.

Im 18 and lookin for insurance.

I WILL have a 1.2 Nova soon, and it will have a bit of body kit on it, and mebbe sum smart alloys.

Well if u read Revs then in the ads section in the back, there are shit loads of modified car insurance companies for 17 years old + !

Also in this months June 2002 Redline there are 8 insurance companies in the back that they have reviewed.

Here Ill list those numbers reviewed Redline magazine.

Based on a 23 year old with 3 points on licence corsa GSi alloys full psg combat corsa kit, 35mm lowered all round induction kit etc etc!!!!

- BHP Insurance 08707 576969
- Mansfield Insurance 01623 660800
- High Performance (transferred by admiral?!??)
- Quoteline Direct 08700 667666
- Thames City 07805 133360
- Advantage Insurance 01509 882311 (best for price)
- Performance Direct 0870 8704990 (best for service)
- HIC (AKA HERTS) 01279 506090 (best for mods)

The best 3 are the last 3 as recommended by Redline.

Gah missed out another 10 companies!!!!
Go buy ur own copy of Redine hehe :D

U want pure mad mental - riddle me this - it costs more to insure a modded mk2 1.2 GSi lookalike (with 1.2 engine), delocked, cat1 alarm, crook lock than it does to insure an actual standard GSi!

Now....I'm from earth - insurance companies...theyre usually from the planet ARSE!

Declare all mods - if u dont youre a fool - if u crash n kill/injure someone you'll be paying for it fer the rest of yer life!

Reading all you articles it cracks me up :D

I'm 24 now and an old man, I only passed my test when I was 21 and my first car cost me a ?100, it was a 'B' reg opel corsa, it was yellow, had a bee sting arial, 4"exhaust, twin choke webers, it was the bollox. I foned up and the insurance was only ?450 I was well happy. I thought they were going to rape me well hard. I had a 2 week ban and 3 points for pissing about on my motor bikes.

How you can even consider spending ?1200 big ones on insurance on a crappy 1.2 is beyond me, why not buy a crap car with very cheap insurance and save up for a year and then with your one years no claims go out and get the best Nova in town.

Please dont take offense at what I have said its just that it doesnt make sense to spend twice what the car is worth on insurance, you are only going to thrash the living shit out of it anyway the first year and probably crash it :o

Performance Direct best for service?????

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahaha

Ok.....they are better now than they were, but bloody hell.....they were fucking useless the last couple of years.....

I sent them a fully declared mods list on the phone, only to be receive my paper-work telling me the car was standard.
I wrote to them (as phoning was a right waste of time.....stuck on hold for almost an hour...no lie, then being cut-off!) telling them that the car was modded and they sent me a letter saying I had to fill in a modifications declaration form because I'd not declared any mods! I bloody did!

Anyway...it was sorted "in the end" but it was a nightmare....hence why "best for service" is so funny!
I'm still with them mind (like a fool maybe?).

I got a shock when I got my renewal letter though....they were taking the piss big time asking for ?726.61
I didn't send back the renewal details as I was going to ring around to find cheaper. Two days before it ran out, they phoned asking why I'd not renewed yet....hahahaha.....I told them I was going to ring round......he then "magically" found a way to bring down their quote to ?448.16! A "slight" difference! It's amazing what difference it can make telling them you're looking elsewhere :)

I still recon I can get cheaper though but can't be arsed ringing round...not got the time and patience!

(BTW....I'm 24 with 5 yrs NCD on mildly-modded GTE..as seen on my site)

yeh but wen ur are ages (17) u want a decent car cos its ur first one. imagine in 20 years and ur talkin to ur son, wot car was ur first car dad, well i had a fucked up a regd mini. its all about look and pride these days, sorry but it is, i mean not all ur mates at 17 are even gonna have a car 0X

I loved my first car....I've still got it in fact.....would never sell it and I'm on my 3rd Nova now.
Even my GTE is not as much fun as my first car to drive! My GTE's more reliable though!
What was my first car? Some peeps know, but I'm can't mention the "F" word lol

Anyway...just be sensible about it......any Nova can look good with just a set of alloys and a bit of colour-coding.....you can have a mint looking Nova and cheep insurance.

My First Nova was only a 1.2L (83 A-plate), but it was in Carnelian red (resprayed to Rover Operto Red....gorgeous colour) with dark grey lower body, colour coded mirrors and door handles and 13" steels. It looked smart and respectable.
I later added an SR front bumper, GTE rear bumper "flick" and some LXi alloys (oh...and a peco lol) and it looked great.
It didn't cost much to insure either.

The key is be sensible.....don't think you can be 17 and have a full on kit, 18's and a ?2K install and expect insurance to be cheep....realise the fact that the insurance companies are gonna rape your ass for a few years and get over it...it's a fact of life.
But don't give up on having a nice car either......there's no reason for being stuck with a heap with no street-cred..

Rich Dale

Age to get a GTE?

Not sure...depends how much you can afford.
I'm still paying ?448 for my GTE TPFT with mods limited to lowering, JP stainless zorst, 16V brakes and 15" alloys and that's with me having 5 years NCD and being 24! I recon that's still expensive.....especially when you consider I was only paying ?260 on my 1.3 SR engined Antibes with GTE kit, lowered, alloys, Weber, JP zorst etc.
I'd say expect the premium to double, but it might just be that Performance Direct are rip off merchants! Either that, or they think my area is dodgy when in fact it's not!
