Right i picked up a new alternator last night from 'just vaux trev' and put it on thinking the bearings had worn in mine which was creating the squeeling noise, just started it back up and its still there! Im now thinking that it could be to do with the carb? An air leak maybe? It starting happening about 1 week ago, it squeels on idle then quietens down when pressing on the trottle. What do you guys think it is?

Belt rubbing on cover? Alternator rubber mounts worn?

no belt is about 2cm away from cover and the mounts look firm

it only really sounds as though it could be a loose fan belt to me. cant think of anything else it could be. if its definately tight then try a new one

if the cambelt is too tight, it can sound pretty terrible.

The rubber bushes on the alternator can wear out making it impossible to fully tighten it.

i have the same fault
is caused by the rubbers in the alternator mount
even tho the belt seems tight tighten it some more ane it will stop whining untill it works loose again atleast

You can get the replacement rubbers, we have an astra diesel at work that had some last year

its not that crappy flap valve on the filter inlet is it? if you still have that fitted. If you have an aftermarket filter, it could just be some induction noise.

trouble is on an old vehicle, you fix one squeak & another one pops up, so you fix that, and on it goes for ever

the strange thing is the belt was tight on my old alternator half way down the bracket then on the new one its slack at the top??? Do different engine sizes have different shapes?

there are quite a few different shapes of alternators, pulleys & brackets.
