Just rebuilt my GSi engine, and been looking at a few bits........
One bit in particular is the exhaust gas recirculation valve...

Really do not like the look of the way this throws exhaust gas into the plenum chamber and looking at it I can remove this with no problem whatsoever as long as I make a blanking plate to cover up the hole on the plenum/inlet manifold where the valve would normally live.

So is it a problem to do away with this or have I got it right and I can throw this in the bin:confused:

Unbolt it, make up a template on some alloy plate, cut that out, then bolt the plate under the egr to effectively block it.

Having it fitted isn't an issue tho(you dont loose power), it causes no problems unless it jams open or something.

Thanks mate, it was the thought that I could be losing a tad power by throwing exhaust gases back into the combustion chambers, that was bothering me mainly.

The other thing that bothered me is that the valve itself is rusted and crudded up both inside and outside, and blanking off seems a much easier option than cleaning up the valve itself

Cool, just cut a template from some 5mm alloy then.
Thats what i did on my 16v :)

Did it on my E16SE, no problems at all. Someone told me I'd burn out a valve, but WTF?

HECK! Burn a valve out by "NOT" putting hot exhaust gases back into the plenum eh?

The more I think about this little bit on the GSi the more I wonder just how much of the exhaust gases it actually puts back into the plenum.
All I could find in the Haynes was that it said that "It is designed to introduce small amounts of exhaust gas into the combustion cycle, to reduce the generation of oxides of Nitrogen."

It was at this point however when the word nitrogen popped up, that I thought........... "be a damn cool ready made place to introduce a different oxide of Nitrogen ...  "

But it only used 1 or 2 cylinders to do it IIRC.

Just block it off or leave it on. Either way it prolly stopped working years back.
