is there a certain bottom end which is the best in a nova 1400..
or should i say is there a crap bottom end?
are they all the same..
whats the 14nz (spi) like compared to a 1400 sr/sri..?

Get haynes out, it should tell you the bore and stroke of the different nova engines, and they'll be the only real differences.
Bore and stroke is identical, as there the same CC.
The difference is the sri's pistons, gives a slightly higher cr.
So use the sri bottom end if you have one.

may also be differences in the casting on the side of the block for tensioners or belt covers, which can result in head scratching/guessing later on.

SRi oil pump casting is completely different to an early carb motor, meaning the sri belt and covers have to be used. And if you do, you'll need to use the SRi bottom pulley, which, seeing as the v groove sits further out, means you also have to use the SRi alternator, as I found out when building mine up.
imho sack off the "auto tensioner" as its a POS and jsut something else to fail.
