gsi running problem

my mate has just finished building his gsi back to standard but under load it has no power it just pops bangs flames and crawls.

Has anyone got any ideas where to start ??

he said the engine is ibc engine is this different to normal?

Does it have a dizzy?
If so check the ignition timing
