What's going thru the drivers floor? Still love this, looks great.
I'd have a guess at lambda, looks like a multi strand cable and if it's running a 4-2-1 it might not collect until behind the sump.
Ha, can you tell that I am clenching to y and get them out of shot? LolThe cable is indeed a wideband for the afr... It was temporary, then became permanent as I couldn't be bothered to keep removing it! Lol

Cheer, yeah they aren't your usual mo5 wheels, but they are only 5.5" wide, so a 195 width tyre looks huge lol

Almost a shame to fit them... Lol
Rest of the build is underway, with access to drawings from the Swindon boys too, so we have the build sheets from the original reverse head bttc cars... A bit overkill, but some interesting 'tweaks' we can do lol

Completed in time for RR meet on the 18th?
Engine will be finished next Tuesday - in theory it could be ready, but will need some time off work! (I dont want to rush it and it will need a tweak to the map etc)
So a small update - I have paid for the parts of the build which include:
New custom (Omega) pistons
New Swindon double valve springs (unique and expensive! Grr!)
Caps
16 new QED wasted valves (so I have 10 decent spares lol)
New Arp bolts all around
Cometic gasket
SBD oil pump
New nylon relief valve
Swindon Race front and rear crank seals (these were over £140 ffs lol)
ACL race bearings
A 'normal' engine builder wouldnt have replaced most of the above, but unfortunately for me Pete only builds competition spec and replaces anything that may not be fit for purpose! lol
Needless to say, the cost (with the labour) isnt cheap, but I will have a more powerful, more reliable lump that I can nail from the word go!
Yay!
M Sutton
08-08-13, 12:16 PM

Dam, yeah didn't think of that, you won't be at retro rides witht this now?
what was the reason for failure anyhow?
Looks like its coming back better than ever ! Nice
I will be At the show, just not in the gsi unfortunately! The failure was the tensioner bolt snapping... Common fault it seems.
Beep beep!

Notice the rather beefy spacers for the tensioners... it seems that Swindon dont actually use an m10 bolt, but they modify the spacer so that there is less stress put onto the m8 bolt...

27-08-13, 11:21 AM
Good work Will, glad to see it back together.
Who built it? Ridgeway?
Engine looks sexy, I can see how those thicker spacers might help reduce stress on the bolt. Where is the breather on the front of the engine?
Breather removed mate and blanked off the rocker cover - its a common mod to prevent surge.
Craig - Malcolm at Rigeway provided the drawings and parts, yes. It was put together (80 hours worth no less!) by a chap local to me who builds comptetion engines for historic rallies, ex BTCC and Hot Rods... basically he's awesome! lol
He's very well connected hence why he was able to glean the info from Malcolm, Steve Broughton and a few others!
8valve-craig
27-08-13, 12:13 PM
Spoke to him myself this week which is why i thought i recognised the Swindon connection. And yes i can fully understand the 80hrs, i was quoted for roughly 50, and thats with a built head & ready bored block.
Very well done sir, and if you paid the going rate then i feel for you.
Ha - I was quoted 50 hours and was billed for 50 thankfully, but thats because I have pushed a few rebuilds his way of late. Saved me £1550 which was nice...
If you want his details, let me know - he's an absolute legend and will build the best engine you could possibly imagine!

27-08-13, 01:38 PM
Is that a flocked plug cover?!?
I'm sure I've read somewhere that GM revised the spacer with a chamfered edge to the inner hole, as the spacers were prone to failing up against the surface of the cast block.
Nice, quick progress though Will.
It is indeed a flocked cover - won it for £8 so just fitted it for a laugh! :-)
I think they did develop the spacer on the c20XEV engine, but its still gash! lol
The tensioner also had to be modified for the same reason - bit I didnt take a pic.
Oooo don't it look posh. Very good work getting on with it all so fast.
Southie
27-08-13, 08:25 PM
I want to stroke your plug cover lol
Is it still on the m8 bolts mate?
Yep - as it turns out Swindon use the M8 bolt and mod the spacer only - the tensioner and pulley are made from billet and cant really be opened out anyway! lol
So not had too much time to spare, but am taking every opportunity...

Utilising my new engine crane... Makes it much easier.
A stripped thread in my new gearbox has hampered progress slightly! But a visit to machine mart saw me with a helicoil kit and back in business...
Good work, but with a hoist/crane dropping it in the top is easy as.
Good work, but with a hoist/crane dropping it in the top is easy as.
It ain't. :p
You've got to mess about tilting it all and need about 8hands. Straight up from underneath...
You can tilt it with one person. The drops straight down. Not trying to miss the rack and gear rod..
Much easier... :p

I was just too lazy to remove the tie bars and jack it up.
Good work Will.
speedy progress Will, running yet? lol :)
Lol - I am doing bits and bobs - I want it ready for Combe, and I need to run it in before then, so its going to be tight... CR is higher too - so it will need the map tweaking - but will see how far its out first!
PS deffo easier from the bottom! It took 45 minsfrom that pic to get it in and bolted down...

Pete, the engine builder popped over last night with 5 litres of Torco running in oil - after primping the cooler, pipework and oil filter (took forever lol!) we got oil pressure and fired her up... It sounded awesome at idle, but AFR was going beserk when revved, so I need to tweak the throttle pot/balance the butterflies - but apart from that she's ready to be run in.
I'm hoping the weather holds so I can get it back on its wheels and get it in the garage to do the final bits...
You may also notice that I painted the header tank and swirl pot and fitted black silicone water pipes...
Tanks look great, nice work on getting it back in and running too.
Cheers matey - I also neglected to mention that there is now a SCCR snuggled next to the new lump... lol
lol this is gonna be a right weapon now Will!
I Hope so!
I cant tell you how frustrating it is only being able to spent 2 hours a night on it! lol I am away most of the weekend too!! I will take a few cans into the garage tonight and have a good go at it!
SCCR I'm well jealous! Sometimes it's a good thing that stuff breaks in a weird kind of way, means you can rebuild it even better than before!

Beer is for when the job is done.
Otherwise good job. What gear cluster did you go for? and what FD?
I am doing easy/mincey stuff, so dont need to concentrate! lol TBH - it will be one beer that lasts me two hours, I will get shouted at by the missus for being anti-social and go in and finish them off!
Gear cluster is a hybrid thing, with a standard F20 5th gear.... I also have some spares that I may need to play with (incl two 5th gears)
Novasport
06-09-13, 02:59 PM
The SCCR in my Sport runs a standard fifth cog but it is not ideal. The leap in ratio from fourth makes it crunch into fifth if you dont let the revs come back down before selecting. Having said that, it is nice to have a standard fifth cog as it makes motorway driving a little easier.
Yeah - I am expecting there to be some issues around the 4th-to-5th shift - thats why I asked for spares!
8valve-craig
06-09-13, 05:43 PM
Mine is a full Quaife 5sp sycro kit. Changing from 4th to 5th is awesome, but with a GM 3.9fd anything towards the end of the double didgits makes for quite an unpleasent drive on the road.
Il send you a PM later with some useful links in.
Cheers mate - I expect I will have to play around a bit to get best compromise!
Had to bleed the brakes After I smashed the reservoir off when I took the engine out... My easi bleed doesn't come equipped for a wilwood pedal box though, so I had to make something...

Cheers, yeah. I need to get out and abuse it now. Went and had the exhaust done after years of abuse on my local speed bump all I need now is the cold map finessed and then it's good to go

Just flicked through this and what an awesome build! Any ideas why the 1600 threw a rod? totally random or over revved? Only asking as I'm planning a similar build :)
Fuel Lab are indeed a sexy bit of kit... It just has to be on display! lol
Sam - no idea. I didnt really get on with that engine from day one...

True, I even still have the box. It's so cute I cant throw it away
How come you have an electronic fuel pressure sender screwed in? Does your dash do FP too?
Cant see it properly, but maybe support the sender if its permanent.
Yeah I have fp on the stack too. I don't think it needs supporting though tbh, it's really light!
Finally treated myself to a proper linkage, having pit up with a home made jobbie for the last ten years....
not cheap, but a nice bit of kit...

Bloody hell.. Was I the only person gullible enough to buy one years ago? Lol iirc mine was £140 in 2004/5 but was worth using imo, silky throttle response dude..
Yeah I thought it would bolt straight on... Nope. Took three fecking hours to line it up and adjust it properly! It's still not 100 percent though but I will spend some more on it tomorrow.
It hasn't taken me twenty days, I just forgot I took a pic... But it wasn't the most pleasurable experience! I lost count how many times I had to remove the throttle body and tweak and modify things to get it working 100 percent... Looks nice though!

Ah, Will, possibly you a fitment issues because it's meant to be an underslung linkage, mounts under the bodies dude.
Really? I ordered the top mounted one! Either way it's mint now. I can't send it back either, due to their new mods! Lol
Cheers Southie, yeah it is worth it, pedal has much more control now...

lol they only use to do underslung when I got mine, ah well. :thumb:
You're probably right though, there was one point where I was tearing my hair out trying to get it so it worked! Lol
either way, I'm happy it's working. I might even get it out to check it proper tomorrow
Wow it's been a while... This is when I dumped it in the garage...
took it out last weekend to Combe but seeing as if fitted new coilovers and the fact it didn't want to go in a straight line...

Ah the joys of correct tracking.
I know, it's like driving a different car lol. It's been out for ages and thought I'd make an effort now the new suspensions on... Pete I know, it's hard I haven't driven the nova even though I had every intention when I taxed it!
