just have a general look at the alternator, check that no wires have come loose and the belt is in good condition, if not the alternator is probably at fault. find someone with a voltmetre, take a reading on the battery when its not running and then when its running. its should be about 13 volts when running!

it was 14v when running, everything looks fine!!

just have a good look around to see if you can see anything not normal, check the earth on the negative terminal is good etc,, im having the same problem at the moment with my alternator!

Check all your earth straps, iirc there's one by the gearbox which can be a bit crap.

Does sound like alternator to me tho.

sounds like youve got a drain, have you fitted anything electrical lately or had a accident/bump ??

see if you can get hold of a multimeter and test between the battery termial and the clamp and see if theres voltage

Good call, I forgot I had the same problem once with my alarm, cheap crappy microscan unit. No power at all to anything, so removed the fuses for the alarm and bingo full power restored.

no nothing changed, for a long while the battery light and the one next to it have been lit, whereas before they used to just flash occasionally, its a corsa by the way, ive got the battery on long charge, then im gonna clean the earth on the alternator to bracket, looks a bit weathered, otherwise than that is gots to be alternator

or the battery itself

I'd say, knackered alternator, poor earths or dying battery. Its the right time of year for a battery to keel over & die. They dont like cold.

just fixed my problem, the small terminal had a slight bit of rust so wasent getting a good connection, try cleaning all the comnnections up and making sure they are tight, but tbh youd be best just soursing a new alternator, or a replacement.

i would, but im not part doing a car up again, if it takes me 5years to get it done it takes 5 years, just needs lots of lurve and attention, and seems as the wife is away i can do it rather than the house!!!

I don't understand why you think your alternator is at fault. By virtue of the fact your battery is at 14V when engine running proves the alternator is fine. Check for bad earth as previously stated, quickest way to test this is get a jump lead and short out the engine block direct to battery negative.

Have you not got a local auto electrician or battery specialist?

I can have my alternator rebuilt with new bearings & all the gubbins for ?30ish here.

Cold weather, finished off a weak/old battery I expect.

Well, he did say "ive put a newer battery on it"

Newer as in? An old spare hes had sat in the garden? lol

The battery must be at fault, as if it was a drain, there would be enough power to turn the engine over straight after you switch it off, it would only drain the battery over night etc..

try and borrow a battery off a car that you "know" is in good workin order before you go spending money on stuff if it isnt needed!
