First off i would like to say thank you to Will f for the invite and thanks to all that organised the day.
We had a good day and for once it was dry but that did take it out on the tyres as very grippy there.
I had a good day with no issues with the bonnet trying to get of my car.
We were put out into 3 differant groups beginers/inter's and the advanced.
Dar/chris sr and myself went into the advanced and had a good play out on track and was good to have ago at things you didnt think you would stand a chance against.
I went out for 4 runs in the day (15/20mins each) and for the ?60 i payed i was well pleased.
The only reason i came of track was because my tyres had started to peel off.
All in all a good day was had with no real insidents.
Well apart from a cv issue for Dar but i will leave that to him to put up.
Once again thanks to Will and the organisers.

But you were missed.
You will be there next time tho.

Forgot to say the piccys above were taken by Socket(Jen).

So a trackday at Llandow, great I thought I can bed in my new pads. So off I go on the first session. Taking it easy-ish. Then I hear a noise, so in I come to kick the tyres and look for obvious problems.

I found nothing so I went out again to see if the noise was still there and to get a feel for where it was coming from. Within a lap I heard the noise again. So I came straight in for a better inspection of the car.

All we could find was the altenator was hitting the body work, which on my car must mean that its moved about half an inch or so. So thinking that this was the problem we looked at the altenator bushes that to be fair had seen better days. Beefed them up a bit and refitted it all. It still wasn't right so we carried on looking for problems. Another thought was that the engine had moved on it mounts because it just wasn't right.

Anyway nothing more was found and we went out again. My breaks also hadn't improved since the first session and were pretty dire. So no late breaking for me. However coming in to the circane on one lap the pedal went to the floor! I go for the breaks again but by this time we were virtually at the circane. We didn't make the circane and took out the nice marker the marshalls had put there. We did however make the bend. Phew!

So in we come again and its getting on my nerves a bit. I've got a horrible noise and wierd breaks but nothing looks wrong. We even took off the passenger wheel and have a poke around down there as well (we were so close to the problem with out even seeing it at this point).

Anyway since the only problem we can find is the ruddy altenator I decided to take the thing out of the car altogether. So we line up after dinner for a third run. Thinking yup the horrible noise is sorted.

We pull away and ITS BACK! At this point I think sod it. I can't find the problem so lets just drive the car and try to work it out. I was thinking that with the noise as it was there had to be whitness marks somewhere, so lets make them bigger.

However the car decided that it had had enough and we stopped out on track. A quick look at the NSF wheel and the wheel looks odd and the disc has eaten in to the caliper! We try to push it and it will only go backwards with considerable force.

So off we go back to the pits to get the trailer. We which the car up on the trailer with three blokes also pushing for all they are worth. I'm thinking feck! how am I going to get this bugger off!!

The car was then parked back in the pits area and I stayed for the rest of the day thinking about how to get it off of the trailer when I got home.

This is what I came up with.
Drive the trailer in to the garage. raise the ramp and get the front wheels off of the deck.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/Trackday%20Photos/Llandow%20290907/DSC07335_800x600.jpg
Then with the handbrake off wheel the trailer out until I can get the rear arms under the car. Then lower the Nova down put the rear arms under and lift her off!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/Trackday%20Photos/Llandow%20290907/DSC07339_800x600.jpg
Pull the trailer out and inspect the damage!

We thought at first that the broken CV was the problem. But it wasn't!
The 2l hubs I put on the car at the start of the year are machined down to fit the Nova bearings. Now I've heard that this makes them weak. I've also heard that 2l Novas don't handle! So I thought I would try them. What has happened is that the hub has broken(So they are weak, don't use them!) and the CV has kept it all together. As I have been continuing around the circuit the broken part in the bearing has been migrating back. I am assuming that the disc would have been moving ever so slightly in relation to the caliper thus opening up the pads more and causing my rubbish brakes. Wheel bearings are made up of an innder and outer race. As the broken part moved back it cleared the outer race, at which point the bearing out have failed and the CV would have bent and snapped. Or something similar. Here are the broken bits.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/Trackday%20Photos/Llandow%20290907/DSC07344_800x600.jpg
You can see the broken part of the hub has migrated right back!

Time to think of a better way to use the bigger CV's. I have several ideas. Just uploading a short video of how floppy the wheel was. It was only being held on by caliper.

Serious stuff!

machine the nova hub carrier to accept a golf syncro rear barring, then you can use an un-modded big block hub then..

Big block shafts with machined knuckles:

This is the best solution IME and involves machining out the steering knuckle to accept a larger bearing allowing you to retain the std hub dimensions. The knuckle should be carefully bored to 68mm by a machine shop and the circlip grooves deepened. There is also a small ridge on the hubs which should be removed to prevent them fouling the new bearings. Golf mk2 1988 synchro 4x4 rear wheel bearings can now be fitted.

Shame about the car Dar.

Fare play for holding it wile locked up and glad you did as me and Chris were trying to follow your line's.

Thats one option but I have another to check out before that. One thing that won't happen is the 2l hub will not be touched this time.

Some awesome piccies there, even a few of me!

Just to say was an ace day and a really good show of cars and pretty well behaved people on track... Was a good show of Novas too!

Will post up pics later

so what you going to use now then fella ?

Ste L
01-10-07, 10:44 AM
also some Corsa B Rally cars use -
VW VR6 Wheel Barings
C20XE Big Block Hubs (machined to match VR6 Baring)
Corsa Hub Carrier machined to take VR6 Baring

This means you can leave alot more metal on the hub leaving no real weak points.
Everything is alot stronger......

had a really gd day the nova never fails to amaze me for so little money spent on her she still loves a good doze of death! lol

was a really rushed friday and saturday morning the nova and sat on axle stands for 3-4 months since the last track day due to it snapping a flange
so friday i finally got my **** into gear and set about sortin the nova well kind off any ways will f's dad kindly machined the cavalier hubs for me and i got new bearings and fitted them late friday night, i did plann on fitting spax rsx coilovers a full poly bush set new tyres and new clocks ones that i could see as the digi chav where rubbish as soon as we had a smallest about of sunlight,

but only the new machined hub got fitted and bearing so the nova was on its wheels again first time in 3 months or so, she started first time and she drove fine for the little test drive i gave her,

i did have time to fit a alloy sparco strut brace which can only help,

so with the wan li tyres fitted to the mo's and the 22-23 yr old bushes and the spax jello suspension ( call it jello because it feels like your riding a blamonge bit soft and bouncy)

me and will f set off!

was really good day really funny the nova didnt do 2 badly really over took 205 turbo, bmws etc etc

the wan lis did suffer a bit and lost grip as soon as the first corner but less grip more laughs in my book lol lol

the engine performed faultlessly again nt a bad xe for free lol
nothing broke or fell off whihc is a bonus as last track day the exhaust fell off the rear engine mount snapped the flange/hub shapped the brake master cylinder gave up! the digi chav dash was useless couldnt see anything due to the glare and the spax jello set up was a bit bouncy coming into the bus stop
but could off been worse maybe lol

anyways the nova is soon to be fitted with spax coilovers, full set off polybushes, new tyres toyo r888's, and posibly a new exhaust as the the old skool cool has worn off and i really dislike the exhaust!

here are some pics

Very lucky Dar ~ I used to run a turned down drive flanges and with only a years worth of road use [maybe a little spirited] mine began to crack.

It's one of the most stressed components in a big blocked nova & rock hard chasis only highlight the weakness.

There is no need to beyond the oe nova knuckle as the bearing mentioned will go into it ~ I took no chances & paid the best in the business to convert mine.

Dar

Mine lasted well under 200miles. But like everything on my car if it breaks it gets replaced with something better and stronger. I would never advise that anyone used the turned down items. They are just too weak.

Nice piccys Corsakid, it was nice to meet you too:thumb:

it has a brand new set or werll newish set of spax -60 shocks and springs just a bit soft for my liking so i have got a set of spax rsx coilovers fully adjustable damping etc with the right poundage springs for a 2 litre so that should help things a little, wot also got delivered to day is a complete nova poly busy set so that will be going on this week end another problem i noticed was tha the trackin was off so i am going to do a full wheel alignment carried out and new balljoints and track rod ends repleaced aswell so hopefully should lead to a slightly firmer and less skitish car, it didnt seem to pitch that much from the pics i have seen though but definatley room for improvement, i have orderd a full set of toyo r888's looking into a cage aswell so things are moving along nicely with the b reg ripper

Phew!

.

 Deja vu for me except in the wet i didn't make the bendlol

Bad luck mate
