One of my pupils asked me what a paddle clutch was today while reading an old practical performance car mag; can anyone explain to me in simple terms what it is, why its shaped the way it is and how having 'paddles' coming out of the centre over a round plate is better please?

I have a paddle clutch on my RS and the charactristics of it are completely different to that off any clutch i have ever driven. I can't tell you way it has paddles for sure but it is either engaged or not, theres no half depressing it. Makes driving the bugger even harder than they are normally to drive but i can tell you one thing, it don't slip!

Also it makes the wheels judder, i can't really explain it but if you pull a way from a stand still the whole car judders for about a 2nd (might just be ford built;)) it's really weird? If you are coasting down a gentle hill say and select 2nd gear and release the clutch it's fine?
