just had the first night out in my nova with the 1.0 8v in it and it seems as though the drivshaft on the drivers side is rubbing on the inner arch, had a good look round and thats the only thing i can see that could be making the grinding noise, anyone ever had this propblem?

I've heard of it happening. Seems odd why it should, try supporting the engine & box on a jack & loosening (not removing) all the mount bolts & try & tighten it all back up with the engine positioned on the mounts better.

1.0 8v ?? Not 2.0 8v ??
If its a 2.0 8v what shafts are you using ?? if your using conversion shafts then you could have the shaft in the wrong way round, take it the shaft have a buldge so far along it ?? Is the buldge near the chassis leg ??
If it is then take the CV's off on turn the shaft round so the buldge is nearer the gearbox side.
The engine / mount would have to be miles off for it to catch normally.
