 A good day spoilt by an un-happy ending. The engine has died - blown the rings in 1 cylinder. Bit gutted to be honest but I've always known it would likely kill itself at some stage esp. with the abuse I give it and the rev's it runs.

Not sure what can be done as its had a lot of mods done to the internals and might not be fixable.
Its a shame cos I've had some great times with the car and I love everything about the engine.

Anyway I took some pics of the hardware on display. It was rammed with tasty track weaponry

Bad news about the engine, it has been on the scene for quite a time tho, so its lasted well.

Being a bit of vulture, Lol, but let me know if you break the bits(tb's etc)

****s sake, the engines not even cooled down yet

Anyway, following on from CP's earlier thread regarding his modification, the front panel didn't provide enough cooling. So, to start with CP and MC tried drilling some holes along the front panel:

After a few laps, the car was still over heating, so they opened it up a bit more:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1193/1429683066_1ff1dfcfd2.jpg

This helped a to cool it a little, but more air was still needed, so out came the drill and the grinder again:

With the front end now having some resemblence to a BMW, the car was bound to perform better, and indeed it did. The temperature came down and apart from the minor mishap at the end of the day the car performed brilliantly as usual.

I know I'm not alone in hoping that CP and MC don't give up on the car, but the guys have enough knowledge and experience to make the right steps forward, whether that means fixing the car or moving on to something else only time will tell.

Thanks again for letting me tag along. Even though I couldn't drive I was able to get some passenger laps in one of the track prepped Elise's that the Book-a-track company use:

It was ?15 for 3 laps, but I didn't stop grinning from the moment we left the pits :D The guy who took me out was an excellent driver and had it sideways on most corners. This unfortunately has only whetted my apetite even more for an Elise, there simply awesome cars. Especially when they have a 2.0 Civic Type R engine running 200bhp as the one that i went out in did :thumb:

There are too many pics for me to upload onto NL, so the rest of my pics from the day can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/72286523@N00/sets/72157602124850294/

Enjoy.

So the front ends been fixed after the little mishap at Llandow then.
Just needs a black mans willy badge on the front now.
Shame about the engine, but if you've had good usage out of it, then ha ho these things happen.

Ripe for a proper engine now Charles lol lol

Glad you had a good day though, sometimes an engine failiure can be taken a little better if you get a good days thrash in before it all goes wrong. Good luck with any plans you have for it!

This year has definaltely been the year of the engine, after myself, Oli, Lee H's and now yours giving up the ghost. Hopefully it'll only be Dans blowing up next year lol lol

Can I ask what the front panel was in aid of? Lightening or because you coulnt source a headlight in time? lol

And who let Jim near an Elise? And whos paying for his shampoo and set training?

The mod on the front was in part a response to the crash leaving a mangled hole where the lights should be and part an experiment into how much air was needed for cooling vs any benefits from aerodynamic improvements. Although with Novas generally having the aerodynamic benefits attributed to a sledgehammer I think we were onto a loser right from the start. A friend of mine put a Nova wing mirror into a wind tunnel and it performed worse than a vans!

Lee

Worse than a vans, or worse than a VAN lol

Stuart

Id go with the latter lol.

Ok if you are going to quibble I meant to write van's as in a wing mirror off a van.

happy now?:p lol

Its the only sports car that I can afford and that my girlfriend won't object to me owning, lol.

Meh, if your gonna come out, you might as well come out the whole hog rather than trying to stay in the closet with a VX220 ;)

Ask her if she'd be happy with an MX5?

I think the VX was an attempt by stu to actually back pedal back INTO the closet lol
