View Full Version : engine cranes?
Need an engine crane - to fit the engine into my project (eventually) and also to lift the front of my car (and back) up so I can work underneath (with suitable support).
However which one do I get - 1 ton or 2 ton?

no doubt someone will say 1 ton but personally if you can afford to get the 2 ton one get that. better safe than sorry.

I'd go with 2 ton depending on the price difference. A whole nova with interior, fluids and engine is unlikely to weigh over a ton, but when you extend the arm (reach) of the hoist, its lifting weight limit is lowered.
2ton.. bit more flexibility in its use.
imho if you kow how long you need it you could hire one and maybe negotiate a better rate..

Get a 1 ton one, if it falls on you, you obviously need a 2 ton crane. Simple really. Job done.
2 ton deffo , thats what i have and what i have used today , still sketchy in places though lol

Ahh, which beam shall I use today for lifting the front of the car, the big one or the little one:

You can never have enough I beams in one garage.
2 tonne, much more sturdy for moving engine about, etc, you struggle with a 1 ton one on your own when moving engines, cars etc with one.
You need one person to stabalise it, whilst the other pushes/pulls it.
If you are particularly skint, take the bumper off, fit 2 bits of wood into the bumper holes, undo the engine & gbox, shafts etc, & lift the whole car up like a big wheelbarrow. it works surprisingly well.
cheers for advice guys...
Been bidding on a 2 ton clarke engine crane on ebay - just won it for ?106. 12 month guarantee and ?30 delivery - happy with that!
now I can get on with resealing the underside of the shed!
