Firstly, thats fronting and illegal. Secondly, if you dont get any NCB, you'll never be able to insure mods etc.. cheaply.

Keep shopping around.

Jack
06-12-07, 11:17 PM
Yep, there's a reason why young people have expensive insurance, its called risk. Unfortunately we all have to deal with it. I spent thousands over the years insuring my Novas, but now my ~8 years NCB allows me to afford to insure my GT4 for ?450.

Just bear in mind if you have an accident the insurance company may well ask you to prove you aren't the main driver of the car (if the V5 is in your name, this will be next to impossible to prove). Happened to a friend of mine a few years back, insurance company refused to pay out when he rear ended someone as he had the car insured in his mum's name.

btw, don't be fooled by these "second driver earns no claims" schemes. Most other insurance companies won't honour that so you stick with one company thinking the minor discounts they're giving you are a good deal.

so true :(

matt_vaughan
16-12-07, 10:21 AM
So what if the V5 has my dads name on it?

I know quite a few people who are doing exactly what I was planning on doing?

So what makes it so illegal?

Jack
16-12-07, 10:55 AM
Its fraud, you're obtaining insurance cover by deception - the primary driver (usually) has to be the owner of the car, i.e. the person who's name is on the V5 OR the person who drives the car the most.

If you have an accident, the insurance company may well ask you to prove that you aren't the main driver of the car. If you can't satisfy them, they'll withdraw cover and you'll be open to prosecution for driving without adequate insurance, and possibly fraud as well.

matt_vaughan
16-12-07, 11:16 AM
No, my dad's name is on the V5, in the eyes of the law he owns the car.

So basically if I use the car more than him, and make a claim, we're breaking the law?

If that's the case then why do they offer us the named driver policy?

Stoo
16-12-07, 11:48 AM
the owner of the car, ie named on the V5, must be the main driver/policy holder for that vehicle

if you are the named driver on the policy, and use it more than he does, its illegal

Plus, if you stack it (being an inexperienced driver, its highly likely)
I think you'll probably loose your dads no claim bonus, which im sure he wont be too happy about.

They offer named driver policies for someone that occasionally drives the car.....

matt_vaughan
16-12-07, 05:09 PM
Well thanks for the info guys. To be honest I would rather build up some no claims and then be able to bring my insurance down, but the quotes I'v had have just been hurrendous. I dont know how everyone manages to get their's down, I'v tried all the tips and hints.

This "fronting" does seem to be a quite grey area though, dont you think?

Stoo
16-12-07, 05:16 PM
yes it is, and its done alot.

ie daddy is the policy holder on 18-19 yo kids Evo, hes named driver, he drives it 99% of time!

Illegal. doesnt build up no claims, and too much of a car for an inexperienced guy

another grey area is the old "im fully comp, so i can drive any other car third party only Innit!"

Welsh Dan
16-12-07, 05:23 PM
Just bite the bullet, pay the cheapest premium you can find to insure you as the owner and main driver of the vehicle, don't modify it, try again when you're 20 with 2 years NCB. We've all had to do it...

well i live in oldham on the edge of a ruff area, and my cover stays i can drive anyother car if its already insured up to 1.8 so i do not no way its so cheap n ive only been driving 18 months n have also have 3 point

Jack
07-02-08, 08:35 AM
Oldham is E, F or "refer" grade postcode area, so yes thats extremely cheap for the location. 3 points, assuming they're for a speed related offence, won't make much difference to the price as everybody has points these days. Age and sex are on your side, as is the fact you've got the cheapest nova to insure lol

Whats the policy specifics? Mileage, excess, alarm/immobiliser, pass plus?, any other drivers, modifications?

Novalad will hate you, he's from Oldham and paying some insane amount of insurance lol

Try Quinn direct, i'm 20 and for my GSI its 1000 fully comp, with 1 years ncb and 3points, and insured 3rd party to drive any car that doesnt belong to me. last year with no points and no ncb it was 1800. But with you being a girl with a 1.2 it should be alot cheaper.

Although to be fair when i was 18 they were quoting me 3500 for the same car. Which then dropped to 1800 the minute i turned 19.
