you need a lot of patience and elbow grease!
id start off by getting it pressure washed or steam cleaned for a start.
then invest in a lot of degreaser wire brushes especially the ones for a drill. even a dremmel can be good for getting into the small areas on the gearbox.
make sure its full degreased and cleaned before painting
and use hammerite either in a spray can or in a tin on the brush.
i did mine quickly last year jus to tidy it up on the gearbox and the block

can hammerite smooth withstand the engine tempretures?
yep, and if anyone else says otherwise they haven't cleaned the metal well enough.
Jizer/Gunk or similar will eat the crud, then blast it with steamer or jet washer. Then i went over it with a wire brush, then jizer/gunk, and wiped clean. Then you can paint away.
as above - the main thing is to get all the greese and ingrained oil patches off - even a small amount left will stop the paint adhering and it will flake off.
For bottom end brush it on and use a dark colour - top (visible) bits mask and spary and use light colour...
