after lying for a year or so my kent cam has seemed to have slightly rusted over, maybe i should have smeered it with greese to stop this happening, anyways should i try and remove this corrision before fiting cam or let it clean itself when the engine has started, like the way brake pads clean rusty discs, i was thinking of some 1200 sand paper to clan it up a little??

No, try getting shifted with some very fine emery cloth or wet & dry. Lube it with light oil as you go.
