so i've got a GTE system in a mk 2 sheel, so be it GSi or Gte whats next. I'm in 2 minds, part of me wants to save and go 2ltr, but thats quite popular now and i'm feeling quite partial to my new 1.6i engine and would like to tune that, what options do i have with the 1.6 to gain more power. I also have to bare in mind i run to work in my car aswell, and i'm told Carbs will eat my fuel big time, but at the same time if the 1.6 carbs use as much fuel as a standard 2.0 then carbs is surely the most cost effective way to more power. JNC are round the corner from me so what ever i go with i have the right people to help me with it. Ideas please ???

A 20xe engine wont use as much fuel as a 1.6 on carbs.
For everyday reliability, with a nice bit of power, i'd go 20xe.

i also had the same problem but i decided to stay with the 1.6i, i have skimmed the head put bigger injectors in it got the head polished. i also got the flywheel balenced and lightened... dont no how much more power im gonna get coz havent got the engine wired up and running yet, also putting a full ashley exhaust system on which should help:thumb:

^^ bigger injectors and no real extra air will lose you power lol

If I knew what I knew now when I started, I would of kept the standard inlet instead of carbs and fitted standalone management (MS - ?200ish) a nice cam and some head work. 20xe doesn't come into it for me lol

any cam suggestions? are these managment systems easy to find? i'm also considering a lsd. I seen a Corsa Gsi on throttle bodies yesterday as well, what do people recon to them ?

first off make up your mind what you want to do with the car, how much you want to spend and your "ultimate goal" with the car (ie if you will only throw a LET in there in 6 months time there is no point spending on the current engine)

i think i'll keep the 1.6 engine and just push as much power out of it as i can, i like idea of throttle bodies, but dont know to much about them. My mate also put the idea of turbo in my head, but can a 1.6 turbo be reliable and which would be the best choice?

Yes it can be reliable if done right.

If you just want it for 1/4s etc, go for the "Sutton option" lol

TB's tend to push the power too high on an 8v. Turbo or supercharger can be a good way to make the power and reliable if built right. Iirc theres a 1.6 8v turbo with 300bhp somewhere in euroland.

Speak to CraigGreen is you fancy a turbo. Not many supercharged ones I know of.

there are stacks and stacks of 1.6 8v turbo threads in the mechanical section but serching is a tad tricky...

in short build a strong lower but not silly low compression bottom end (usual specs can be found everywhere but tweek for your needs)
have a decent port job done on the head
ensure everything is flat/inline.
a custom cam grind to maximise lift/duration but keep as little overlap as possible (cheap from catcams)
aftermarket management and a boost control device (amal valve etc)
maybe get the inlet fluid honed.
4 branks exhaust with turbo flange
id say a high spec T2 (or GT version) or lower spec T3(gt)

decent setup and that is bound to have a reliabale 200bhp.
