Only if your car was made before a certain year, sometime in the 70's I think.
Some people take a chance and do it anyway.

1973 iirc, I'm sure my dad's dolomite had just missed out by one year and that was '74.

They'll probably be a touch more expensive than normal ones as they're not so common. Proper ones will be punched metal so yes, more expensive than standard modern plates.

?30 fine for incorrect display of registration plates I believe...

IMO they look horiffic made using modern plates. The pressed steel on pre '74s looks so much better.

lol my dad's Ginetta missed out by 3 months I think, Im sure they won't notice on a car of the age anyway...

A lot of people round here are running pressed metal german plates (non reflective) and fines are being dished out left, right and centre.

I very much doubt they are legal, as they won't have any reflective backing..

Even if the yellow backing WAS reflective, they wouldn't be legal - you need to have black or non-reflective letters (i.e. black) so silver won't cut it.

I wasn't aware that you had to have the makers postcode on them. Damn that foils my plan then!No they dont, you wasnt aware cos your right, they must carry a british standards number (BS) to be fully legal.

oh, i swear that was true, but you are an MOT tester so I won't argue.

And to conform to the British Standard, they must have the manufacturer's postcode printed on them.

The British Standard also requires each number plate to be permanently and legibly marked with the following information:-

1. The British Standard number

2. The name, trade mark or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier

3. Name and postcode of the supplying outlet

yer they are legal got the makes postcode and company on them, they are a yellow reflective backing.
If I read your post right, and the letters are silver, then its not a legal plate.

Yeah, they do have to have the makers name/postcode on, even tho the majority dont.

They look crap anyway. talk about following the masses.

The first V-dubs with them on were cool, now every tom dick & harry has them, far from cool IMO.

Also you have to have at least 10mm of reflective backing round each symbol
