Well today at Llandow was my first time out in the nova since fitting several upgrades such as T40s, close ratio box and AVO coilovers. I've had a few problems in the last week which some of you may be aware of, mainly involving the gear box. So last night I had everything back together and decided I was going to run the car as it was and see what happens when you take a noisy gear box out on track.

At first it seemed that the answer was that there wasn't anything to worry about. The car felt great, the handling was about as good as you'd expect when running A048s in torrential rain.

Heres a few photo that my dad took early in my second session.

Sadly there are no more photos of my car on track because after about six laps a very loud knocking noise started to come from the gear box. Realising it was pretty much terminal I grabbed a spare box from the Stick's trailor and decided I'd nip back home and see if I could change the box and get back to the circuit in time for a few more laps.

Things started to go seriously wrong when I got about half way home (only 5 miles), I changed gear, follwed by a loud CLUNK, and all of a sudden no drive to the wheels in any gear. Luckily my Dad was following me home in the good ship Fourtack and towed me the rest of the way.

Got the car home and started working to get the box out and get the new one in, but I'm sure as many of you know, changing a box with the engine in situ can either be a breaze or an absalute biatch! And today mine was a biatch. Got the gear linkage back in the right position by about 4:55 by which time it was pointless even trying to get back.

Anyway, here's the pictures everyone wants to see. The cause of all of today's problems.

This is what I managed to filter out of the gear oil!

The most important thing I need to say right here is thanks to Ernie for the gear box. Although I didn't make it back to the track I now have a working and quiet box that I can use until I get my close ratio box rebuilt. Cheers mate much appreciated. :thumb:

That was a bummer mate, was gutted when I saw you pull over, had a feeling it'd be the fake straight cut causing issues.

Damn that really did chop off a few teeth! Its a real shame that it let go and stopped your day. It happens to us all though. When I blew up my box, it lasted three laps. At least you have another box to chuck in so your not off of the road.

I take it they were not a matched set which caused the damage as they are permanently meshed.

They were sold to me as a matched set but yes, that is the assumption that I have come to.

If you can't find 'em, grind 'em.

I think thats not far off how my box looks like at the mo. Every time they change the transmission fluid a handful of teeth fall out :D

My Celica is whining in fourth and fifth and crunches into third and fourth at anything over 3k revs. Think its only a matter of time before I see a similar picture!!

Fitted a cluster with a 1.87 2nd gear a few meetings ago and didn't bother changing the crown wheel to go with it.

Fitted some new rear shockers earlier and did a mock start in the yard, all seemed well, went to move it a few mins later and heared the famous grinding sound.

Problem is the pinion is buggered too, and I don't have another cluster like that, so it's back to crappy 2.16 cluster and bouncing off the rev limiter on sunday for me
