They just twist out. Take the glovebox out and i think the air trunking for the heater and it just twists out. Drivers side is a bit fiddly but comes out the same. If your fitting aftermarket speakers you would be better off taking the dash out. You will need to do some cutting to make them fit.

So i fitted some in the doors instead.

there is just a screw inder the vent when you pull off the little cover. that helps to get them out and they just twist out with some persuasion. i normally fit tweeters up there and mids in the doors. i didnt get round to cutting my cards on my last nova and sold it to my mate without the cards fitted and he just cut the card out carefully avoiding the fabric and they are hiddenb in the doors. reduces the sound quality but it looks really mint and the speakers are good enough so still pretty good

Take the dash out and do it, thats probably easier unless you've got girly small hands.

Mk2 dash out is a 5 minute job.

if your not taking the dash out, your gonna get lots of cuts, find intresting new swear words and sweat loads trying to get the standard ones out :P

Are there any aftermarket speakers to fit in the tiny existing holes in the dash or is it a case of buying some decent 5" and mounting them in the doors?

I wouldnt bother using dash speakers. Anything that can cope with a few watts or some bass will simply shake the dash to bits or sound poor as there is little isolation between fr & rear of the speaker.

I'd advise building up some kickwell pods for 4 or 5" speakers. Saves the door cards.

Heres mine with 4" Alpines.

3.5" will be too small? Probably find they'll fall out lol

I think its quite a good spot for some speakers. Keep them as tweeters, leave the bass for larger speakers, and you should be sorted.

Most 4"/10cm ones will fit, really deep ones with massive magnets may be a squeeze .

get some components mine where ace not an expensive set either kust a 17.5 in the door and a small tweeter. the tweeter came with loads of little brackets and i used contact adhesive to fix it in the holder of the original speakers. sounds like a bodge but it has done the trick in several of my novas and i have never had a problem just be careful mounting the speakers in the doors i.e that they wont be muffeled by the das and wont be in the way of any thing on the door cards like pockets and that the door will shut . all these problems are from experience i.e speaker fouling hinge or window slider!

Craig I'm taking it you've taken out the shelf that runs under the dash?

To all the others thanks for the helpful info much appreciated

The shelves arent in the pics, but they are fitted. I made the pods so the shelves can mount on a ridge that I built in.

The underdash area looks a bit airy or open without the shelves IMO.

if you want to fit some co-ax. speakers in the o.e dash space: JBL GTO326.. may have been replaced with a newer model (327?) but they can handle a fair bit of volume, a clear if tinny sound. ive always had them.. Cost about ?30. 30W rms, 80W max. (headunits put out 15-20W RMS so good match really)

But do the magnets fit in behind the dash, as the bottom of the screen/bulkhead is in the way.

My issue with dash speakers, is that they arent mounted very securely to run loud, the isolation between back & fr of speaker is almost non existent so they will always sound pap & the fact that theres minimal room.

I'm no ICE expert anymore but I honestly dont think either mk1 or mk2 Nova dash's are suitable for anything other than tweeters tbh.

You are right; there's bugger all space behind the speaker to use as a soundstage ; also you have to partly glue/seal-partly screw the speaker in; it doesn't do a bad job because it can't do bass really anyway; but with a sub -because of theyre sensitivity, prominent location/position - it seems to work ok for me..

..just to add- CG's kick-well idea is the best way of adding speakers- in a 'want bigger sounds' kind of way - size does matter , where co-ax. speakers are concerned.. to a point. Tho i couldn't help recomending a component set up; with tweeter in the o.e dash location and mid/bass speaker in these 'kickwells'
Thats prob you best bet. Run that lot of an amp.
