Not if you use a crimping tool to stop the excessive loss of brake fluid from draining out of the system. Check haynes

cling flim and a very tight elastic band over the reservoir works reasonable well.

but i thought it was more fun seeing my brake fluid eat the uni carpark

yes even if it is for peace of mind. you shouldn't really have to if you get a brake hose clamp though.
