well ive just had a letter from CICA, which ive been waiting for for a year and a half!

anyone who doesnt know CICA stands for criminal injuries compensation authority, its basically a government scheme were if your injured in a violent crime, you can apply for compensation.

cut a long story short i was 'ejected' from a nightclub by a heavyhanded doorman. basically he snapped my arm clean in half :wtf: this all happened way back in jan06.

was a p1sser to say the least

BUT>>

my letter,....it say :D

?3500 is on its way to you

so now im having wet dreams of XE novas/corsas and also VW Golfs/Corrados on porshe wheels.

if the money was yours, what the hell would you buy!!

15-08-07, 08:16 PM
For a road car I would never consider a XE Nova over one. Or one of those golfs(Maybe some of the later ones). You would modify the Golf and an XE Nova is already a modifyed car. I think that once you have the cars you would struggle to insure them per year. Hell you might even struggle to insure a GTI-6, but they are fast as standard and handle extreamly well(Galvanised ;)). British built too :D

You must have some cool grandads around your way. Even BT likes the 6:D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v485/DPursey/Dsc03114Small.jpg

This one is well within your price range and you would have some change to insure it as well.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v628/danvtr_9/gti-6027.jpg

Or have you considered one of the little Jap motors?

dave.gsi
15-08-07, 08:28 PM
gotta admit the black one looks quite nice. im not overly bothered by insurance cos im 25 in two weeks and im earning a half decent wage.

anyone with an XE nova run it as an everyday car? i can imagine it would be a bit of a pain in the ass everynow and againlol

plus the wife is on at me to buy a 'respectable' car:wtf:

any other suggestions ppl?

Dar
15-08-07, 08:44 PM
Dave, I wouldn't really consider an XE Nova as an everyday car. For an every day car I would be looking for something thats quick(Read as above nippy), good looking and comfy. So I would be looking at decent standard newer cars.

Thats why I suggested the 6.
I'm thinking about other cars that you could run as an everyday car that fit in the that bracket and price range. Golfs are nice but I know feck all about them.

Just seen a Mk3 G60 that looked nice from the outside but the interior looked very dated. (http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=137564)

I reckon you could pick up a nice Jap car for that sort of money or a BMW.

FTO ?1500 (http://www.ultimatejapcars.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=20316) Left with some money to change wheels etc.

if i was to go vw id hold out for a golf g60 or a mk1 converted to g60 or 20v turbo. i quite like the polo g40's there arent that many good ones to buy and standard they look quite ****e but with a few subtle mods they can look ace. a freind has one and he has used a 1.5 bottom end off some diesel van, eaton supercharger, methanol system! and load of other stuff. he does motorsport engineering at uni so is quite in the know.

i was quite suprised with all the replies expected to see nova this and nova that! personally id wait for a clean let to come up remember dont buy the first thing you see

I would go for the Veedub but I'm biased. But then everyone else is gonna say novar, apart from Dar. lol

dave.gsi
15-08-07, 09:20 PM
3.5K is a rough budget. as said i earn a pretty decent wage so if needed i could pay insurance monthly. i could even save up a bit more if i saw a really special car, not in a huge hurry to buy, just considering my options.

so ?3500, bit more, bit less, whatever really.

i think dar may be on the right lines with something slightly newer, it'd definately keep my missus happy lol

must say im quite partial to FTO's, only thing is one of my mates has a black one:wtf:

and cant remember who suggested it but a passat?! not a fan of big cars at all. gotta be small/medium with a fair bit of poke :D

Twas me, only mentioned because it's a lot of car for your money. Big cars tend to be cheaper anyway.

If I were you go on autotrader and set the price to between 3-4k and browse, see what you like the look of.

how about a mk2 gti but all standard.. not touched?

dave.gsi
15-08-07, 09:55 PM
doesnt matter about it being standard as id only fiddle with it anyway. i do like the mk2's, but only if they have the single headlight conversion. they look odd with 4 lights!

Astra 4 SRi?

Or GSi turbo?

Jack
16-08-07, 12:10 AM
Of the two, I'd say dub wins hands down. Early Golfs and Polo's can be nice when lightly modded, and some of the later stuff like Jettas and Corrados are cool.

If you're looking at other cars, I'd also put in a strong vote for the '6. ?3500 will get you a decent one, and out of the box they're fast and handle very well, but still comfy and usable as an everyday car.

If you're willing to keep up the ongoing costs then perhaps look at Jap muscle - ?3500 could get you a decent Mk1 GTO, mint ST185RC, SSIII Celica, GTi-R, maybe R32GTR. You'll find ST205s too, but thats bottom of the market price so best avoided; and possibly N/A Supras and Skyline GTST's.

I would have thought so

Mk1s are getting a bit thin on the ground now, let alone one which will stand up to the rigours of everyday driving. The Mk2 G60 (supercharged) might also end up being a bit troublesome as an everyday car. Although it is well built, you can bet every one has been thrashed, so you'd have to buy carefully, plus factor in servicing costs of that supcharger. iirc its Jabbasport who are good with the G60 side of things.
Mk2s in normal GTi guise are right enough and 8v cars live forever.
Mk3s are peanuts and are not to be dismissed instantly, theyre a safer, better screwed together, quieter car and the VR6 examples are worth a test drive.

All Corrados are fun, especially the VR6 (in your price range too), although parts availability on breakers is sometimes difficult so buy a decent one. The back seats are cramped and if you have kids, you might want to check how easy it is to get chairs in and out!

I wouldn't go Vaux with that sort of competition in your price range, but thats because I'm getting sick of rattly, rusty little Novas! You could always compromise with an XE powered mk2 Golf....lol

16-08-07, 01:01 PM

mk3 Golfs are pants IMO.

Corrado's are OK

It would have to be mk1 or mk2 Golf for me. I fail to see where Vdubs score over Vauxhalls though.
Maybe they are more refined from new but I would choose the GM equivalent over all of the above tbh apart from possibly having a Corrado over a Calibra.

Vauxhalls are typically more affordable when a few years old, so naturally fall into the wrong hands sooner & thus end up ragged & wrecked. A mk2 Astra GTE is a better car than a mk2 Golf in so many ways. Likewise an Astra GSi is far preferable to a mk3 Golf in my eyes aswell not to mention a much nicer cabin to be in.

This is a debate that will rage on for years. Theres not much in it but, the VW fans usually shout the loudest!

Well looked after mk2 Astras are well cool these days.

Such a rarity. My GF drives a GTE (8v) & it gets a lot of looks tbh, even if I'm driving.

Most of them died at the hands of nutters years ago that thrashed them to death. Bit plasticky esp in the boot & parcel shelf area & they really need lowering to not feel scary, but when sorted are such a nice drive!

16-08-07, 06:41 PM
well thats certainly got me thinking lol

i think i can rule out cav turbos, octavia vrs, vectra gsi and anything else with a big boot, just dont see the appeal of a big saloon.

skyline gts, scoobys are also out. couldnt be doing with the cost of maintaining them.

corrados are definately in my list, i just love the look of them and they look quite classy rather than boy racer so i think the wife would approve!
mk1,2 and 3 golfs are still in. mk1 being my fave
astra gsi (mk3) maybe. but heard 95% of them are rot boxes
nova xe is still in. havnt had a nova for a few years and just miss it:tard:
gti-6 im unsure of. can you buy a ralleye for this money?
106 ralleye also (phase 2)

fcuk this is hardlol

what about an mi16 205

the list is bloody endless!

Mike
16-08-07, 06:44 PM
id have an Mi16 205 over a Nova XE anyday. Only down side is tanks have better interiors then 205.

Build yourself a 205 with a 2.0 8v 406 Turbo engine :thumb: and then stock up on rubber pants lol

Dar
16-08-07, 06:52 PM
You can get a rally for that money. So you don't like creature comforts then. If you want to know what a GTI-6 goes like come to the Cheltenham meet on the weekend.
Check out the cars for sale (http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showforum.php?id=21)

ever lookind into a GTi-6 engined 205? They really go :D

Dar
16-08-07, 07:02 PM
Yup, fast little cars, much the same idea as the Mi16 though. I sprint against a 250+ BHP Mi16 205 running full slicks, it's for sale if anyone has 14klol. People always say 205 Mi16 over XE Nova but they are very compareable.
Anyway I wouldn't want either as a daily drive. They are just fast tin cans which is ok for the rawness but you do get fed up not having come comfort after a while.

Rallye's are awsome apart from one major drawback, its a left hooker. All well and good but they can be a pain for day to day use. Entering carparks where you take a ticket becomes a hassle for example, overtaking is trickier, and if you regularly drive another car thats RHD, you end up in limbo, never feeling 100% comfortable in either ( i know as I had use of a mates Rallye years ago while he was on hols lol) BUT they are awesome to drive, sound and look the nuts, and urn heads wherever you go. The synchro 4wd system is even more fragile than a cally transfer box though lol

My suggestion however, is a MK2 with G60 interior, running a 1.8T lump from a MK4 or a TT. These conversions are probably the most successful in a MK2 as theres no huge weight gain and they can be tuned to buggery! VR's are a nice engine but theyre a pig when they go wrong and weigh an absolute ton!

OR

For ?3500, you could build a very well sorted track nova with a proper big block engine lol
