Alright lads,

What exactly is the score about re-conned engines and the way you drive em for the first miles? i've been told that i'll have to drive sensibly :( for 500 miles at no more than 45mph :(:(, and then another 2000 miles at no more than 80mph. Do you have to stick to these rules, cos i'm itching to give my GTE engine on Twin 40's a bit of a roasting but don't know what'll happen if i give it too much right foot! :-/

Depends wots been done to it really. I reckon that 500 miles of moderate driving is OK and then gradually start to open up being as smooth as poss & making sure that you allow the water temp to normalise after a cold start and allow a few miles cool down after a rag. Moderate driving has been described to me as staying within the speed limits using the gears as much as poss. to avoid high revs or hard pulling

i don't know if this is much different, but... 2 people i know both bought a kawasaki ninja each (zx-6r) one of them ragged the bike to f**k from the start, not running it in, and the other ran it in perfectly. BUT, the one who ragged the f**k out of his seems to go much better than the other, it'll out accelerate and beat the perfectly run in ones top speed! So its up to you! (i dunno if its much different for bikes, but an engine is an engine after all)

if it didnt matter they wouldnt have advised you to take it easy. Me m8 got told the same thing for his escort recon. He'd had extensive work done mind. It could be something to do with any warranty that came with the engine. Allow it to settle in - rag it too soon may seize on you (not pleasent at hi speed or at any other time) etc...etc...

oh now, that is interesting!

mind you some (ford) engines like a damn good thrashing at startup to get good oil pressure and flow round the parts ;)

u have to take it easy for the first 500 miles for deffo, as the piston rings and bores will get scratched and cause the engine to smoke. after 500 miles it'l b ok but make sure u let the engine cool after a ragging otherwise u'l kil it quicker in the long run.
