November 2006
Well I attacked the car again, removing some more parts.
Removed the carpet.

Removed the headlining

This is what came out
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00139.jpg
I also found something once the carpet were removed that wasn't to nice
The hook that holds the drivers seat next to the door has decided it don't want to be welded to the car anymore, it is cracked between the spot welds and almost completely broken so that had to be welded up.

November 2006
Took delivery my new OMP cage
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00143.jpg
Got bored at work so I removed the black tarry sticky sound deadening panels from the inside of the roof. Took two hours and it was right crap job to do, but looks a million time better now.

Attacked this stuff the day after

After
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00148.jpg
I used an old slotted screwdriver that had completly rounded off edges and an old 1" scrapper that was rounded off and had no burrs. A bit of patience, plenty of white spirit, and a spontex sponge with nylon brillo for scrubing. Didn't have to use a heat gun.
December 2006
Fiited my cage with me assisting Lee303

Today I attacked the underbody and rear wheel arches where the welding had burnt the underseal etc.
I just cleand it up, filled any little hole and painted it all with stone guard.
Also got rid of the gash cut of metal work on the rear arches inside the car that the rear seats mounted too.
I drilled the spotwelds out and removed this stuff,
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00154.jpg
Then cleaned up, filled, rubbed down and primed the areas.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00155.jpg
Between Christmas and New Year I sorted out the inside. Tidying up rust, primed and painted the cage and floor plan.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00165.jpg
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00166.jpg
I painted the inside the same colour as the car but no lacquer.(I can't be ****d.)
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00168.jpg
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00170.jpg
Gave the cage 2 coats of hammerite hammered black for that rustic look.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00171.jpg
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00172.jpg
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00173.jpg
Chuffed to bits with the finish. Considering its the first time I've done anything like this.
Also redone/tidied/retaped the loom again, just got to get some clips from vauxhall to clip the loom back to the body.
Looking good.
Corsas are definently looking the future for track cars.
Just looking at the insides, they are much better built than a nova. Everything just looks "more solid",Lol.

January 2007
Fitted the new shocks and 40mm springs
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00190.jpg
Old ones
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00192.jpg
Then I fitted the new brakes.
Mintex M1144 pads and Courtenays 16groove discs.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00202.jpg
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00200.jpg
March 2007
Gave the car a clean and fitted the new shoes.
Bought for ?300 total minters with almost new tyres on them.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00220.jpg
April 2007
When I got it serviced and MOT'd a few weeks back it gave me a good chance to inspect the underneath and it wasn't looking to healthy.
So seeing that I shut down for work over Easter, I have over the last 4 days been crawling around underneath clean, grinding and treating all rust and then undersealed the whole of the car and the rear wheelarches where welding had burnt of the existing stuff
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00225.jpg
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00227.jpg
And thats it so far.
Next on the list to do is to fit new poly bushes all over, which will be done after Llandow.
looking good fella keep it up.

Took delivery of this a week ago
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00089.jpg
Gave it a lick of paint
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00098-1.jpg
Then set about fitting it
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00096.jpg
What was removed and binned
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00108.jpg
Everything fitted
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00105.jpg
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00106.jpg
Just got to give it a run and see what it goes like now.
So chuffed to bits with it as its the first bit of major mechanical work I've ever done and (touch wood) it all works fine.
Also removed all these crappy rubber bushes
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00109.jpg
And fitted some brand new Powerflex bushes alround which I bought of Ebay for ?55 for a full set.

Fitted my new 90mm rear springs today.
Originally it had 40mm rears and with a stripped rear end they made no difference, it sat at the original height. So I figured wth some 90mm ones it will drop it about 50-60mm.
Before

After
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/DSC00126-1.jpg
Much better now, and sits about right I think.
Also got rid of the rear wiper and grommeted the hole to save some weight and the rear badge was mankie so popped the actual badge of the plastic back and prepped it and sprayed it satin black.

Just got to wait until 12th November to try it out, which is when I go to Brands Hatch for some track action, and also see how my back injury copes too.

Got myself a glassfibre bonnet becuase the old original one was rotten one the front edge. New one is not just a skin version one but a full moulded one so it has more strength in it. Plus it weights half as much so some more weight saving.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/IMG_0036.jpg
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/IMG_0037.jpg
Old bonnet off.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/IMG_0038.jpg
New bonnet on, painted it satin black, because i'd never get a good paint match with rattle cans.
Fitted some locking Aerocatches on the front.

After having my MOT done in April, the emissions were a nightmare to pass. Taking 15 minutes to settle done and get through the test.
Sallony done the test(yes it was friendly but a legite one).http://www.corsasport.co.uk/board/images/smile/biggrin.gif
Having spoken to him it was advised that the cat was shot.
so...
I bought a new cat but one for a X16XE so that I could finally upgrade the manifold, and bought a new Janspeed 4-2-1 manifold.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/photo-1.jpg
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n16/scgsi16v/photo.jpg
Then had to make a sleeve to join the new cat to existing exhaust system.
No pics of it fitted because I cant be bothered to crawl under the car again.lol
You can see the differences between the cats(lengths and location of bends) and the manifolds.
So you can see the ifferences between the C16XE and X16XE cats and manifolds.
Its made a good difference to the cars performance.
Its added to the midrange 3k-4.5kish and the way it gets to where the Mantzel works. Alot more smooother instead a step.
Where was that manifold bought from Stu?
nice progress dude your an inspiration! lol

I did have to wait 6 weeks for it as Janspeed are a nightmare for pulling their finger out of their ar5e and doing some manufacturing.

Another update, been a long time coming.
I picked up some 2nd hand new unused Goodridge braided brake lines cheaper than the rrp a couple of months ago.
Well this weekend I finally got round to fitting them.
A pretty easy job to do really, just the offside rear one was a bitch for access and took twice as long to do as the other side. Got them all bled up with new fluid throughout aswell as the old fluid was black and smelt funky and had debris and **** in.
All in all, easy peasy job and the brakes feel much firmer now. Just got to wait till Combe to try them out in proper anger.
old manky ones

Good work.
[Typical question]Have you never been tempted fit a XE?[/typical question]
smcgsi16v
07-02-10, 06:55 PM
yes!
it smokes like a bitch now and consumes a litre of oil easily on a track day.
I think i will wait till it goes bang, or untill Craig can longer get it through its emissions test. then i may.
but i do really enjoy revving the nuts of it and really pushing the stupid small block, it goes well.
I suspect next year will be the time of change.
Just seems the logical choice tbh!
Its an easy 30bhp and 40lb/ft torque gain over your current engine, and i bet selling your inlet and the 4-2-1 would cover the cost of a xe engine....
smcgsi16v
07-02-10, 07:09 PM
Yep correct, i'll easily regain some of the cost selling them parts.
And yes, it is the logical choice, I have resisted 9 years of ownership so far, but like I say the engine is almost getting to end and its either rebuild or change engine time. I certainly aint going to rebuild or replace with another smallblock.
I reckon next year the time will eventually come for small block death.
