Can you XE\LET boys and have a look at the pic and tell me if it my cambelt should have the marks on the outer edge. Its a late engine if that helps.

Also, i have a lot of oil splattered under the cambelt cover. but i have just replaced the rocker cover gasket.

I dont get what you mean, your cambelt looks shagged though.

There are 2 marks on the cambelt pulleys that need to align with the notches in the backing plate of the cover. At the same time as the lower pointers being inline too. Its best to remove the lower pulley (undo all the outer bolts) to set the bottom pulley by the marker on the small toothed pulley as the outer one can move on the rubber.

You also do not want any oil near the belt as this will deteriorate the belt & allow it to snap or shear the teeth off eventually. BAD NEWS!

You need to identify where the oil is from.

Your first job is to find out what its rubbing on.

Please look at the new pic, the arrow points to the grooved bit. my guess is that belt shouldn't have these grooves on but i'm not sure.

Well first thing get another belt on, an if there is oil in the cam belt area upper part then I would say more than likely cam seals have gone. Also find what its rubbing on as it will just the same to the next belt.

Jeff your correct that groove should not be there. Its rubbing on something and you should find out what.

Make sure its running on the tensioner/rollers correctly, and the edge of the belt isn't touching the roller/waterpump pully edge(causing the groove)

Ring them.

There easy do if you know how, there a bit worrying for a first timer tho(few teeth out=fooked valves)

I would insist on a 'Gates' kit usually available from a decent motorfactors. Gates make the OE belts etc for VW & Vauxhall. I've heard many a tale of a ?4 cheaper belt kit failing. For the sake of a couple quid insist on a Gates job.

Theres bound to be a good guide with pics on Migweb if you search on there.

Another hint, you can check TDC by inserting a long screwdriver (or similar) down plug hole no 1 if you dont trust the timing marker.

Autovaux want ?70 for a kit. does that sound good or bad?

Sound fair to me, more than likely the belt cover will be rubbing on the belt, make sure all 3 mounts for the belt cover are there.
Don't go off the timing mark on the alternator pulley as it can be miles out, take it off and theres a mark on the oil pump housing, few pics that might be of some help ...

Cam seals are easy to do, might be worth changing them while you've got it in bits.
