Some of you will recognise this thread from months back which was in general chat! but as I have made some good progress and have more plans on the way! I thought I move it here where it should be.
So this is where I started for anyone who didnt see the frontend rebuild.
Since my rebuild 2 years ago, I thought the front end needed a little TLC so I took the car off the road and started work! I noticed there was a little rust in the inner arches, front cross member and behind the strut! As much as I didn?t want to start rebuilding the car again! I decided the only way to do it properly was to strip everything out and fix anything that needed to be done. So I am fitting a new front cross member and front panel, fix any rust I come across and fit an engine bay strengthening kit while I am at it!
As the suspension was out I have got them powder coated along with the ARB, hubs, control arms and bought some powerflex bushes too.
While the engines out I thought I might as well do some things I have wanted to do too. But as I have only done about 4000 miles on my rebuilt engine! I am just going to be fitting a big valve head, LSD and some chrome & polished bits!
So here are so progress pics!

Engine looks awesome, nice work.
Cars looking sweet too, nice to see a nova with a set of 16s/17s? on that aint speedlines or softstars.
luke langton
29-07-07, 01:19 PM
Cheers guys, yeah the engine has taken me a long time just because of all the chrome and hours of polishing! Other wise it would have taken half the time to put it back on the road! But I have always wanted it to look like that so I thought I would take my time and do it properly!
Yeah they are 16s but just look big in those pics! I think it might be because there 195/40/16? Don’t know if I am going to keep them?
Was thinking of getting speedlines but I do like the fact that I haven’t seen these on any other nova! Don’t know if they look a bit chavy tho?
They suit a nova imo.
There like my old wheels.
Are they Fox wheels?
If so I would consider changing them for the weight saving alone. Fox wheels are made of Lead I rekon!
But the car and engine look stunning, credit to you sir!
Quite a few rims look like that.
Kahn RSRs/replicas, Masitaly look quite similar.
luke langton
29-07-07, 02:02 PM
No, there called Atek. That?s exactly why I am thinking of changing them because everyone thinks there fox wheels which we all know are pretty much cheap budget wheels that you see on kitted maxpower style cars!
very nice mate! engine looks stunning!

Looks stunning, never really been a massive fan of chrome engines but I think that looks absolutely spot on lots of effort put in there. Car looks really nice and done properly, a job well done. I'm looking forward to seeing that at future shows :thumb:

29-07-07, 06:36 PM
I fitted a new clutch kit then decided to bolt the gearbox to the block as one, then lifted the shell over the engine! rather then drop the engine into the bay which I did last time. this was a lot easier and worked out better.

Yeah there seems to be quite a few coming back now! There was a stage when I was looking for one and couldnt find one anywhere! They seemed to be quite rare. All I could find were silk violet ones! I thought it was supposed to be the other way round. lol

Whats the engine spec? Courtney type? Spacer plate etc?
luke langton
11-08-07, 06:34 PM
yeah, I had the courtenay turbo conversion done in 2004. along with the engine rebuild which I had bored out to 1650, compression lowered with the spacer plate and two head gaskets, standard cam and cs15 head.

Wow thats realy nice matey.. needs a custom/chrome exhaust manifold :D
Cheers thanks, yeah I know I think it would finish off the engine bay. I will get one made up eventually but I just want it on the road at the moment. Its something I can change over at a later date!
should handle like a dream with the diff fitted it the only thing my 1.6 gsi turbo lacked.
But had a quaiffe lsd diff in current car i got when it had the Group A 1.6 8v in it, totally transformed the way the car handled the more you pushed it the better it got

Where did you get the spacer plate from? To fit 1650cc bore.
craig green

Where did you get the spacer plate from? To fit 1650cc bore.
Are the head gaskets any different for a 1650?
If they are you could simply have the spacer laser cut like Courtenay do. Prolly get a handfull for the minimum cost.

Yeah, I cant wait to see how it handles with the diff fitted! I think it should really help with putting the power down! it seems a bit of a waste not fitting lsd if you have a turbo.
luke langton

I got the spacer plate from Courtenay with the conversion and the head gaskets aren't any different!

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c56/luke_novagsi/SS850549.jpg
I finally sorted out my brake problem after trying two different servos and buying a new master cylinder which I later found out was faulty! So I gave my v6 calipers a new coat of paint and fitted my braided brake lines.

Yeah, after all this work it will only be driven in dry weather! I might take it to some shows this year if there are they left?
fcuking nice that is!!
TRAX is quite soon?
luke langton
15-08-07, 04:47 PM
I have never been to Trax so I don?t know if that?s the type of show I would take it to, it?s all full of body kits and ice installs isn't it? That?s what I have heard!
ive never been to trax either and i shall be missin it this year aswell.. but ive heard its full of chavs and distorting music...
btw i've been looking thru my pics and i've found a few of yours from you Feature lol it looked mint back then..
craig green
15-08-07, 05:24 PM
TRAX was less chavvy last year by all accounts.
Its not too bad anyway, you just have to ignore what you dont like.
Majority of the cars there are big money stuff, its just not all tastefull.
Lots of Skylines & Imprezas though.
that is absolutely stunning, isit a turbo kit you can buy for the 1.6 or isit a custom job, it looks proper mint m8!!! thumbs up to you

Whoever polished the inlet manifold was bloody good at his job.
luke langton
17-08-07, 05:44 PM
Thanks for the comments guys, yeah the inlet manifold was the hardest job! No one wanted to touch it so I did it myself, now I know why! lol I must have spent over 50 hours just sanding and polishing it smooth! Then took it some where to get the final polish.

indeed - very under-estimated is; peoples ability to clean, lol..
I did this to my old E16SE years ago with degreaser and wire brush drill bit..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/peester/DCk29yfc02.jpg
But luke yours is on another level; i didn't spend 50 hours on the whole bay; let alone just the inlet..
Bet its value has gone rocketing.. - the most expensive E16SE inlet ever..??
luke langton
18-08-07, 07:35 PM
Yeah that?s clean engine bay you had there! It?s amazing what you can achieve with a bit of elbow grease and some basic tools.
It can save you lot of money too, one metal polishers said he would have charged my over ?1000 to polish that manifold just because of the amount of hours it would take!
BenNova
19-08-07, 04:12 PM
like i said erlier looks mint, so jelous mate.
iv found that the best polish to use is the 'meguires bare metal polish' it costs about ?8 but is more that worth it, i use a felt polishing tip on a dremel muti-tool too..... magic! HAPPY CLEANING lol

Yeah I know what you mean, I have been undecided on the wheels for a long time. everyone tells me to change them!
I want to keep 16s but there is'nt many wheels I like, except speedines which everyone has! but there must be a reason for that ;) .

Yeah they fit without grinding, are good quality & suit the lines of the car really well.

How's things now Luke? Will we be seeing this at PV?
Keith
luke langton
10-03-08, 02:36 PM
That?s funny you should say that as I was just thinking about the PV show this year! How quick does it come around? I remember when I was trying to get it running for last year.
I said to my self that it would definitely be ready with lots of new stuff done to it for this year. But I haven?t done half the things I had planned! It?s been really slow over the winter but as long as it?s running then I will take it even if it?s not how I want it. Other wise it seems like I will never get it there.
Looks like you are making some good progress with your project! Will that be ready of PVS?

Get in touch nearer to PV Luke. We will have a convoy from SW no doubt.
Whats left to do?
Maybe see you at Castle Combe as usual no doubt?

Yeah Craig I will get it touch in the next few months to sort out a convoy up to PV!
Well the engine runs fine but when it?s on boost and comes up to 6 rpm the engine management light comes on and it seems to not pull as hard! So I need to try and sort that out as soon as possible.
I did take it to a rolling road to have it checked and they said it was the octane sensor but I bought a new one and it hasn?t changed!
Plus I really wanted to have the interior retrimmed, change the seats and possible change the wheels before I took it to PV.
Well I still got some time but I don?t think I will do any of that.
If I can get the engine problem sorted by PV then I will be happy!

Seems an odd problem. Not sure on the diagnosis but what do I know...
I recall my EML came on once or twice but it never altered the power output in any way at all. Just at really high revs.
Atleast it goes anyway.

Luke-What boost are you running? Does the engine have a lambda?
Maybe the afm reading is going out of range and causing the ecu to bring the fault lamp on.......
luke langton
11-03-08, 02:12 PM
I am running about 7-8 psi and my engine doesnt have the lambda.
i did think it might have something to do with the afm, i am going to check the wiring to see if there is anything wrong.

AFM was one of my thoughts...
Few spare ones here if you want to try some.
[edit] How does it feel with the CS15 head I sold you?

Well I got a few ideas I am going to try, I will keep you posted as I will probably need some more advice.
yeah the head is good, but as I have change quite a lot of stuff since I put it on plus the EML comes on I don?t really know how much of a difference it has made!
is this project still going? i love this car

Before!
This is probably the cleanest Nova I've ever seen. Absolute credit to Lukes dedication. I just need to get him out & blow him away with my shed!

Yeah this project is still going on but I haven’t done anything on it since the PV show! It’s off the road at the moment as the winter is coming! Well it’s already here. lol
Yeah that was my old gsi! Which was a real shame that was really clean.
But if that didn’t happen then I wouldn’t have done this project! So every thing happens of a reason I guess.
That sounds like a challenge Craig! Hows your rebuild going? I still haven’t seen your new project?

It's finished (well nearly) but has been on the road for about a month.
Lots of niggles to sort out but otherwise running fine.
[edi] look at the weston thread in South West regional forum for pics from Yesterday.

Luke, hats off to you sir. In the past I've done my share of polishing bike bits, and it's always been a royal pain in the ar$e. Dirt flying everywhere! :-P
Anyways reading through this here thread hasn't told me if you finally got her running smooth. If you have, what caused the engine management light to come on? And how did you sort it? Just wondering.
Cheers,
Niek

Cheers thanks mate, yeah as you well know then all that polishing wasn’t easy by any means! especially keeping that way once it’s been used! It would be ok if you never used it! lol
Well I still have the problem of the light coming on every so often but it runs nice and smooth, so I still can’t put my finger on it!
I will keep on looking into it when I get the time, then I will let you know what happens.

Hi mate great thread. I have just two questions to ask you. Have you left the standard ecu and how much bhp do you think it's going to give now? I think a standard one gives out 100bhp. Thanks

mate just read the whole thread motor looks mint bud
luke langton
17-04-09, 05:23 PM
its got the standard ecu with a micro switch, i had it on a rolling road when i rebuilt the engine running low boost about 4psi which made 140bhp but i now its about 8psi and has cs15 head so should hit 150bhp.
