I have just put some cobra coilovers on the front of my nova but I have noticed the coil is very close (almost touching) with the steel 13" wheels I have been using to build up the car. I am about to order some 16" alloy wheels but will these fit at around 6-6.5" width. I am not sure if the greater wheel diameter will help clearance as the front struts do taper in at the top. Springs are 84mm outer diameter and struts are slotted for camber adjustment which is set roughly in the middle at the moment. Am I worrying over nothing or are these springs quite wide?

my guess wait and see what issues you actually get once the new wheels are on then rectify accordingly

As he ^^^ said best to see whats its like with your 16's on, also gonna depend on what length springs your using and how low you wanna go.
I've got 9" springs on mine lowered about 45mm (ish) and the spring seat sits about 15mm above the tyre 195/45 on a 7 x 15 rim. Have heard of folk having to run spacers to clear the spring / seat.

I've heard of this with AVO's before.

my old avos would have touched if i had wound the platform down any further it was level with the top of my tire

Well I'm hoping to get some irmscher softstars as there is going to be another half price deal coming soon (hopefully), these are only 6" wide and have 45 or 49mm offset. Adjusting the lower seat of the coil isn't going to make any difference as it is currently set well below the top of the tyre.

I had this problem with my AVO's when I put the slicks on and had to use universal hub spacers to get round it. However I have since swapped my Hi-Spec brake hub/discs off and fitted Tar.rox hub bells and discs. I suddenly found i had a load more clearance and the reason was that the Tar.rox hubs are actually thicker thus pushing the wheels out and giving the extra clearance. So it maybe worth just shopping round to see if you can find thicker hubs?

I run AVO's and the collar is just about level with the top of the tyre on a 195/50R15. If you do have issues you could get a shorter spring if you have enough adjustment.

5mm spacers will also do the trick and would be cheaper as well.

Just to give you an idea on how much difference the same sounding setup can have here are my Avo's on 195/50R15's

As you can see I could also go an inch shorter on the spring.

Looks like you could get a bus through that gap^^^

As for mine you can see it rubs, I don't think the coils are any wider at 84mm are they? P.S. this is with standard 13" wheels. Is the preload spring strictly needed?

Looks like theres helper springs on yours so thats gonna add an extra inch or so, maybe ditch the helper springs ??

The helper springs are not strictly needed, plus you could use shorter springs as well. Although the really short springs do cost more.

also bear in mind that the 13" wheel has its lip much lower down so bigger rims "might" just naturally clear the coilovers...

yes I thought the larger rim diameter may help as the shocks are tapered in at the top (as mentioned in first thread). Full marks for the drawing BTWlol .
