thread has been on mig for some time ill do my best to cut and paste the project so far......

got some piccies of mincing that has been going on for the last week or so, not a great deal but i do work over 50 hours a week

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/e501e579.jpg
these babies arrived the other day, last bushes i have to buy as everything that is rubber has been upgraded to poly spec, including the steering rack

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/bc2fe8e4.jpg
made a start on looming up the beast, the rear is as it was just removed the wiper realy etc, the front has had quite a bit removed and modded, as it was a mk2 shell with motorised headlamps & other singlepoint injection stuff

getting there...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/43eec709.jpg
sprayed the grill up the other day as a test colour for the bumpers, looks spot on, will be even better when the laquer is on and mopped.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/30779352.jpg
this waht what im left with, tinnedup with solder ready to join the rest of the loom which needs extending to be hidden out of the bay...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/7d0245eb.jpg
to this hole in the inner wing, have put a rubber gromit in the hole and some grease on the bare metal to stop it rusting.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/823ddcf8.jpg
one of the bumpers i got hold off, just what ive been after, already smoothed to a tee, just a quick rubdown, primer and topcoat, then laquer, no bloody sanding fro hours....phewhttp://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

and the rear onehttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/dd62df0e.jpg
i just had to fill in the exhaust exit on the rrear though, as i wanted the tailpipe to exit nearer the centre, bit like early beemers

girlfriend treated me to this aswell, to get the car kickstarted and the painting finished, as i borrowed one for six months!!! now i have my own and its twice the size and 3 times more powerful, so air tools here we comehttp://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/c972e064.jpg
had my manifold i got from mr hewitts legendary valver a while back, sandblasted and then coated it with high temp paint, wish id of ahd ceramic coated now though, oh well see how it lasts then just ahve blasted again then coated next winter.

will update this thred more as i do stuff

right bit more progress, as ive got the week off work,

my new spray gun arrived, nice bit of kit, much better than the old kit i was using before, one of those wish id of waited moments today as the finish on the wing ive done is cracking straight from the gun
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/b3137ad2.jpg
new sealy gun

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/e92bf686.jpg
one wing done, just the other to do, the colour match on the opillar is different looking at the pics, mmm not sure why same paint batch??? bit more practice i supposehttp://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif , also whacked on other door while i was at it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/d995e156.jpg
started making up switch panel to be mounted next to the vx clocks, lost some of the toggles i had for it ages ago though grrrhh, so gonna have to use these cheapy LED ones for now
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/b1866428.jpg
will mount something like this, will probably do it tonite as im on a roll.

rear beam has also been put on permanent now with poly bushes

sold the gsi nova i bought for a runaround, more ? to put into this build

more pics soon, hopefully ill remember my digicam instead having to use my phone, not too bad quality though.

right some more progres........

painting mostly...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/90230b1c.jpg
rubbed down, degreased, and primed the skirts, left on my hot bonnet to harden quicker ready for flatting down

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/0d98b82e.jpg
one lot flatted ready for topcoat, no need forany further work on these bits as primer filled most stone chips and blemishes, which was a bonus

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/f38352d1.jpg
not the case with the other side, needed some stopper/filler applying lightly to some areas to fill in minor gouges, nothing major though, then another light sanding/flatting

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/acf716dc.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/2f0fedbe.jpg
first coat, no runs lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/226a29ad.jpg
second coat voila!, prettey good finish, even without laquer, which ill do next sunday

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/a4ec6827.jpg

23-07-07, 04:29 PM
once again left em out in the sunshine to harden off.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/fadc33a6.jpg
also made a start on the smooth scuttle which i ahvent touched since i started the project over a year ago!!http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/redface.gif just the other side to do now

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/5d5b2b4d.jpg
bit like marmite i think this vent, either love it or hate it, its carbon/kevlar moulded, lite and strong and is purely functional with track performance in mind.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/46ce8206.jpg
even got a coat of primer of the fibreglass bonnet!1 it is going to be a nightmare to get right though with flatting, as its so bumpy

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/01675471.jpg
matched the new grill up to, light wet/dry then topcoat, no need for primer as surface was already flat as a pancake

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/21784c1d.jpg

popped down to rajgilss to pick up these babies, what i wanted originally but funds wouldnt allow, but a bit of patience pays dividends as they say.http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

thats about as much as i could squeeze in today, with the gsi nova sold off aswell, bit more funds to the projecthttp://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif .

just need to get the bonnet painted up, then the bumpers, few touch-ups then on with more of the electrics and interior,

got some more stuff from the postmanhttp://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif ..................

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/08d3df39.jpg
new swirlpot/surge tank, will look pukka in the boot and hopefully combat any problems with fuel surge on track days as the tank i have for the nova is not baffled inside, combined with this...................

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/009836ee.jpg
.............tasty stainless braid hose, should look like its ready all out track 'g force' action

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/d510d3d0.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/b10b42ed.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/d519f031.jpg

right been a while, not as much done asi wanted but hey gotta earn the pennies her some piccies........

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/e148b10f.jpg
found a battery box at last for a steal at ?20 flebay jobbie, also finally settled on the pump arrangement, the low pressure pump will go behind the drivers seat so it is as low as possible.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/ee3d0d36.jpg
another view of the setup, still some more hoses to go on, like returns etc.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/554a0eca.jpg
made some more progress with the dash, settled on this, tis all removable for access etc and mounted very sturdy, because this mutha is gonna shake when it idling with the solid mounts and lumpy cams. put sparco pedals on too, right git to mount evenly.http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/mad.gif

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/eda0be2e.jpg
finally finished the smooth scuttle, not perfect but i just cant be ****d to much more bodyworkhttp://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/lmao.gif

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/b92ad036.jpg
oo and decided to fit some throttle bodies while i was at it lol.

got these as part of a deal with joff and the corsa xe, too hardcore to go in the daily driver so ideal for the track car, plus all the management and ready made loom, easy as no messing.

will get more pics soon of the TB setup as i plod along, wont get much done this week, with billing at the weekend.

finally got some rims i like a lot, at a steal, they will need re-powdercaoting as ima bit picky with wheels, then wrap em up in some toyo r888's, been getting good reviews so they'l be the first tyres to be tested on the monster.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/14c3a2b4.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/b3d1d940.jpg

will get some more update shots today of the car as im going down to work on it today.

more pics, sorry not step-by-step but i get too engrosed to remember to take pics.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/51a1b392.jpg
fianlly got some dzus fasteners at a good price, hell im not paying ?8 each for or whatever they are new!, very effective, just done one side atmo as they need a lot of fiddling to get right alignment and spacing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/6d542851.jpg
decided to go back to the smoothed gsi as its o much lighter than the gte one i was going to use. will be same colour as grill, a mazda bronze/gunmetal metallic.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/96abfbee.jpg
my DIY blanking plate for the dizzy end, only took 10 mins to make, hacked end of an old dizzy, filled hole with epoxy metal putty and painted up voila!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/cd38c67e.jpg
shot of aby at current state, all plumbing nearly there, catch tank mounted and denso/charade tiny alternator in!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/2c90057d.jpg
tight squeeze for the TB filters, had to trim the bulkhead right back, still tacking and carefully seaming back together, will do this sunday before any rust sets in.
custom catch tank bracket made, well chuffed how it turned out, welded box section, side plate welded on, then all smoothed down and painted.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/da3264df.jpg
another pic of bracket and how close the filters are, lucky ive got solid mounts, so hopefully no chafage, oo eerr.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/784f8f08.jpg
custom top bracket for alternator, made form old XE slider bit and some angle steel all welded up and painted. again really pleased how this turned out, fully adjsutable for belt tension and clears the TB's with ease.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/e16e9bfe.jpg
this pic really doesnt show how small this alternator is.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/f2fd22fd.jpg
my ?4 billy bargain oil cooler installed, need to bring it forward a little as rests on the top rad hose a bit too much for my liking. sandwich plate sourced for free, so just need to track down to hydraulic hose and get the unions crimped on. anyone know anywhere??

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/a58480eb.jpg

and finally, some pics of my rose jointed tie bars and brackets. were a bit scruffy when i got em from ian at eurorallye, so had them powder coated locally from a guy ive had a few bits down, sound chap. really good job!

bit of an update, lost loads from the recent shutdown of mig but cant be ****d to load it up again....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff001.jpg
got round to moving the driver seat forward happy now with position, just need to lower the column at tad when i find a suitable piece of ally block
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff002.jpg
new dash piece made froma thin sheet of steel, cut it, bent, cut out holes &bolt holes, primed painted in satin black, quite chuffed with how its came out
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff004.jpg

finally sorted unions for handbrake, mishmash i know but didnt want to buy anymore as they are bloody expensive!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff005.jpg
mounted battery box, and run power cable to FIA cut-off switch. new engine loom sat there waiting to be wired in, pretty much plug and play, need to sort out nova loom to suite now, I HATE WIRING!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff003.jpg
sorted twin cable throttle setup for the TB's. made a small plate from ally, then used 2 pushbike brake lever adjusters to hold new cables in bay, they pop-riveted into position.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff009.jpg
needed to modify lever to accept twin cables so lopped off olld bit and welded on new steel with 2 holes drilled

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff011.jpg
awful welding i know, havent picked up the mig for a while lol.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff012.jpg
cables in

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff013.jpg
used two clamps i got with my escy rally cables for the hydraulic handbrake. couldnt find any electrical connecter block to butcher for use with this.

bit of an update with the wiring.....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff031.jpg
hooked up stalks with wiring to make a start and get my head around what is needed, ie for the wiper motor which is inside the car now, you can just see the wires behind the dash panel in the corner.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff030.jpg
installing some power leads to the fuse box, crimped and soldered joints, will do the wgole lot in this manner, well most will be soldered and heat shrink.

also in the post is a quaife nylon gearknob for the custom gear shift.

also got hold of one these at last, paid more than i wanted but hey its the only anodised purple one ive seen lol

couldnt let lee put me to shame so did some on the nova today...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture029.jpg?t=1171218182
got a sheet of ally from jamied today, made up a bracket for the ECU, used my new rivnut kit, just the job, then pop rivet to shell, solid with a little flex for the vibrations.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture028.jpg
this is the final dash, settle on this arrangement, nice and simple.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture027.jpg
aka lee stylee, made up a board for the relays and fuse box, tucked out the way this time.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture026.jpg?t=1171218390
and lastly re-done the fuel pump bracket, with use of some foam, should qieten it and allow some damping effect.

also extended my pug wiper arm, been in the garage for 3 years since my old rio verde nova was totalled into a lampost.
ive welded in 2 inches of steel to increase the sweep, just need to sort the sodding linkage now, been ahving fun with that! might just resort to a fiat or citroen jobbie

cleadend up the custom internal filler neck and welded on a breather pipe, pitty i used an old earls fitting(was free anyway lol). its really fiddly getting it in but should be better than old attempts on my previous door shut fillers.

few pics of the progress for you guys...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff011-1.jpg?t=1174249843
caliper brackets both made up now, sourced the bolts i needed froma local place, all fits without spacers with the speedlines which im glad about, the MO's have plenty of room.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff012-1.jpg?t=1174249963
decided to repaint the floor in satin black, i know im jsut going the get annoyed at how dirty it will get being such a light colour low, didnt take long either.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff015-1.jpg?t=1174250076
gearlinkage in, its going to need a fair amount of fettling until its right, but i think looks the part and feels very solid and positive. made up a solid aluminium joiner to connect it the main shifter rod for ease of removal.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff017-1.jpg?t=1174250195
finally soucred another filler neck and rubber hose, so made up the lower half of the filler neck, this is the end result with a lick of satin black

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff014-1.jpg?t=1174250288
fitted in door shut, james sorted me out some filler neck hose from work top job!, just the bretaher hose to fit and run to the tank.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff018-1.jpg?t=1174250371
lower half fitted in, had to use some dum dum sealer that had partially gone off to seal the hole space left when tube was in, what looks like cracking is just where the stone guard has cracked due to the sealer shrinking even more, wont see it when painted.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/paulsstuff013-1.jpg?t=1174250538
shot of full inner arch all stone guarded ready for paint.

filled her up with coolant to check for leaks two infact needed new more heavy duty hose clips, also tested the filler neck and no leakes there, so she has fluids now except brakes so onwards..

2 gauge pod arrived today, spa gague thereand a vacuum gauge (will be a volt meter)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/100_0575.jpg?t=1175716219
re-did the alternator bracket, with some heavy box section much better now and more solid, im happier now anyway.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/100_0576.jpg?t=1175716458
found a plug for the tiny alt too, had to file it down a bit but had the right small terminals.

settled on this shifter setup for now, until i get more time to fettle the proper custom one.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture039.jpg?t=1196897257
finalli front bumper all fitted up, going to repaint it blue though lol, and a laguna splitter or something.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture038.jpg?t=1196897357
bit the bullet and lopped the hinge tops off for the carbon door custom hinges, as with lee's build im making the doors removeable for ease of working on in the future.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture037.jpg?t=1196897504

not much to do bar the doors, finish the underside, last wiring bits for the engine and management.

novashed

righty some pics of what i got up to today,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture082-1.jpg?t=1197829449
first hinge being welded up, note small strip under the tube to space from baseplate to mimick original postion on all-metal door.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture083-1.jpg?t=1197829571
decided to make it easy to bolt them on to the door by welding in the bolts to the hinge then only need a ratchet to bolt them od FB door, used nuts underneath to make sure i welded the threaded bar on flush.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture084-1.jpg?t=1197829722
you can see better here, the weld blobs on the plates where the threaded bar drops through, lots of measuring then measuring again so i didnt have to use any packers.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture085-1.jpg?t=1197829856
the doors are full carbon fibre! (for the none believers when i was trying to sell them)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture086-1.jpg?t=1197829946

one of my better pics, showing the ally insert to take up slack and easily replaced if the bolt wheres the hinge, kinda sacrifical metal, probably no need as lee has said but felt the need lol.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/Picture087.jpg?t=1197830112
lastly final shot of door on, with no packers, fit is ok, will need fettling because im fussy, but its by no means as good as a steel door, but weight saving is awesome.

novashed

righty another update, now ive jacked my old job in i have weekends off!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/sophie017.jpg?t=1200854713
been messing with my ashley grpA system, as they made it exit on the piss out the left corner which i can stand!! ive chopped and bent to have it exit off-centre how ive wanted it for ages, alos lopped off the original rolled tip pipe and added a brushed stainless tip salsh cut and perfect length for the look i wanted, took a few hours to get right well pleased.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/sophie018.jpg?t=1200854900

also got on with some of the other door hinges which will be completed this week.

BTW if anyone wants a pair of mint steel doors in baby blue one with a new corsa handle cut in there in the forsal forum. no good to me now may aswell put their value to good use.

i have a SPA dual gauge water temp and oil pressure.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/sophie025.jpg?t=1202842045
kulite pressure sensor, was originally destined for a front brake caliper of a sauber F1 car, picked it up for a bargain ?15 way before christmas as the gauge i bought cam with no sensors.
it fits in neatly on the remote filter boss ive tapped in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/sophie024.jpg?t=1202843552
spa temp sensor handily went into the outlet on the inlet manifold where it was blanked off, should get a relativly accurate reading from here.

righty some progress...

went down the scrapper and picked up half a stainless system for fiver!! bonus.

so the job today was to completly re-do the exhauist system as its far too loud for my liking,

so ive introduced another silencer after the manifold and gave it a straighter run rather than the bend that was originally for the nova shifter,

also made a new backbox from a stainless 3" bore i had lying around and the ashley one already on it, used the ashley inner perforated bafle tube and end caps ran it through the stainless backbox and the welded on the ends to allow 2 1/4" joiner and tip,

the exit pipe is no smaller and much more to my liking and so much quieter but with a hint of burble still, the throtle bodies are actually louder than the exhaust i reckon, but that will be resolved as i have to make a backplate for my carbon airbox system

progress,

ive sorted the sidelights now, found the wires under the wing in the loom, just chopped!, so spliced in a feed and hooked up the rears too, another switch!, must get some pics of the exhaust too.

also been tarting things up witha paint brush and baby blue, where ive scratched over the last 4 years,

last jobs now to get the brakes setup better (bias pedal box), so any help there would be cool,

and get these bloody dorrs painted in 2 weeks when i get paid agin.

doors are now in primer, took a wile to get up to scratch ready but got the outsides primered, just going to blow over the inners to match as not fussed.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/100_1380.jpg?t=1225039622

also had time to paint the bumpers agin in blue as just could get my head around them being bronze, came out well, also splashed some hammerite on my tailpipe.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v310/novashed/100_1375.jpg?t=1225039733

novashed

could do with some ideas on how to operate the openers from the inside, ive sold on my carbon doorcards now to gather funds so cant fit inner handles, any ideas boys?

kenny_afh
27-10-08, 07:18 PM
the standard steel pull rod can be tagged up to a drilled hole and just pulled inwards, the flex in the rod allows it to still function.

or replace the rod with some form of cord, as it just has to pull a lever to release the latch, have a look at the door latches and it will become clearer.

novashed
27-10-08, 07:51 PM
i know how it pulls, just wondered a neat solution, thinking a piece of seatbelt webbing may be in order.

kenny_afh
27-10-08, 08:05 PM

righty, doors fitted up now, done the drivers door polycarb, very fiddly to get right, passenger door has a crap fitment, it has bowed quite a lot and the top sits out far, will have to fettl to get right but not expecting perfection by any means.

just need to get hold some more lock mechanism rods for the locks etc

burgo
03-11-08, 11:11 PM
