Right, as most of you are aware now, my old blue car has now gone to live with mr peester;
http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=82994

So this left me with a bit of a dilemma, my sport is way, way off ever being finished, and i wanted another nova, but one that wasn't so high maintenance, if you know what i mean.

So i spotted this on here, the day before my wife gave birth to our first daughter,
http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=71815&highlight=nova+1985
this was almost the same as my very first ever nova, way back in (ahem) 1993, so i mailed pete an offer, which he, at the time declined. I thought nothing more of it then, as baby evie arrived, and as you can imagine, novas were the last thing on my mind!
So a month or so later i log back in, and think " hmm, i wonder if pete did sell it?" so i fire off another e-mail, pete still has it, and a deal is done!

A month or so later i go to collect, and car is as described. It's by no means immaculate, showing it's 22 year wear! But it was original and i loved it!
the drive home was fun, my mate ian in his xe nova seeing if he could pass me at one junction, fire up the other side, and still beat me to the next junction down! it was however painfully slow, and the 4 speed box a mare. I did just have the intention of warming up the 1.2 a little, and fitting a 5 speed box.
Here's how it looked the day after i got it home;

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/103_1021.jpg

Here it sat for a bit, until spring came, but along with spring came another plan!

I purchased a coscast xe from mr dave marshall in summer 2006, and had plans to fit it in a 4 door saloon, but the right car never came along, so i decided to fit in in the gl! Now i can hear the purists amongst you now saying "nooooo fool" so i decided to do it in such a way that it could be reverted back to original if i ever decided. (i'm not sure pete would be too happy either!)

it made it to pvs this year, (only bloody just!) those of you that were on novaload/read tv will probably have seen it, 2 down from joff

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/100_1444.jpg

it's by no means finished, i have lots more bits to do, including 13's and some body tidying.
So i'll start soon with how i fitted the xe, up to how it looks now.

I didn't realise it was yours until i saw pics of you with it at pv lol

20-07-07, 12:34 AM
tis a good find; quite local too... i luv the old skool/retro ness and its genuinity.. been for a lil ride it (pottering thru pv, not at speed) and just seems mad to sit in an '85 full spec nova hearing and feeling that motorsport-mount'd XE rattle and boom throughout the shell..
old sKOOL indeeed.

Very nice, talked to you at PV briefly. Was chatting to the previous owner, a friend of mine, I think he's regretting not keeping it and doing something similar for himself! You've done a nice job though.

The interior is cool in its own horrible way too. lol

John
20-07-07, 08:06 PM
Cheers for the comments guys,
I don't intend to do a lot exterior wise, apart from a set of widened 13's, and hopefully, if i can afford, a complete exterior respray. (original colour) The snow plough needs some adjustment too. Oh and the interior IS staying put, when was the last time you saw something so hideous, yet mildly appealing as that!

Ste L
20-07-07, 08:10 PM
if your running 13's, what you doing brake wise, as you'll need 14" min for valver brakes?

John
20-07-07, 08:28 PM
Erm i haven't got that far yet ste!!! Possibly four pots, will depend a lot on the rims when they're done.

Ste L
20-07-07, 08:35 PM
i suppose if you can get brakes that are small enough to fit behind mini wheels, and still stop and xe powered mini, should be a problem to get brakes for some 13's

John
20-07-07, 08:42 PM
Ok, first things first, the day after peester collected the blue nova, i ripped it's heart out!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1279.jpg
here's the xe as i bought it, out of a late cav sri,
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/103_1026.jpg
I decided to give the engine a freshen up before i fitted it, a partial strip revealed a leaky core plug......
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/103_1037.jpg

So a new one was fitted.....
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/103_1039.jpg

2 new cam seals, new gm thermostat and cts.......
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1045.jpg

And a new cambelt kit and water pump.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1046.jpg

The old oil filter and sandwich plate removed,
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1068.jpg

C20ne adapter purchased....
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1069.jpg

..and fitted...
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1070.jpg

along with a new filter;
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1071.jpg

John
20-07-07, 08:59 PM
seeing as the cav was multi v driven, i had to bin the bottom pulley and alternator, along with it's mounting bracket, and fitted the bottom bracket....
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1073.jpg
....Along with the early top bracket from a scrap mk2 gte xe i had.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1072.jpg
The scrap astra also gave up it's bottom pulley, which i had machined, then fitted, along with a new belt.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1320.jpg
The cav pot flywheel was binned, (bottom) and again a mk2 astra flywheel fitted, with a new clutch kit. (top)

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/103_1030.jpg

the whole lot was then bolted to this f20, again from said astra....
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/103_1027.jpg
.... Along with these 22 splined gte shafts with cav 1.6 inners, new gm boots fitted.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/103_1029.jpg

The brian sidebotham rear mount and linkage was then fitted ( i modified it so that the gearbox level plug was still accessable)..
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1317.jpg

..and reversed the guide bush.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1316.jpg
a fresh rubber c20ne sump gasket was then fitted, along with a late mk2 astra front pipe, with the hole for the 02 sensor.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1319.jpg

John
20-07-07, 09:13 PM
with the whole lot built up again and m-tech powercap fitted, it was ready to drop in...
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1281.jpg

But not before i had dressed the o/s chassis leg. I decided not to box it out properly in case i ever reverted back to the 1.2.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1323.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1324.jpg
And cut back the o/s matrix pipe.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1329.jpg
The n/s front tie bar mount also needed a plate, as the bottom hose on the old rad had been weeping, and had caused a hole about the size of a 2 pound coin, resulting in an mot fail if i left it. I made the plate the same size as the existing one and welded it in. I have a genuine vauxhall cross member to fit at a later date,
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1325.jpg

the f20 lower casting was then removed so as not to foul the tie bar..

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1327.jpg

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1328.jpg

And the o/s engine mount fitted to the block.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/xe%20conversion/100_1326.jpg

You didnt stich the bay then?

Nope i didn't, i'd set a date of having it done for pvs, and stitching it would have meant i'd miss my deadline.

It's on the list of things to do though, i may also fit a strengthening kit too. I have my eye on an sbd208 kit, so if they get fitted, this will all get done!

The welding of the bay would have meant a complete bay paint too, which i didn't have the time, or money for when i fitted the xe.

Oh and lee, if i get tb's, i may have a mince around a track, I'll be the one with the baby on board stickerlol :thumb:

Hi darren, yeah it's staying exactly as it is for now, hopefully have the 13's on for next year.
I think it looks good now, one young chap in a lean mean tin foil machine got to learn how quick the, ahem, 1.2 really is on the way back from pvs, he passed me as i left the motorway with a surprising thumbs up!:thumb:

After driving a corsa with this kit on i'd have to say i'm hooked. The noise and power delivery are awsome imo!
The only prob is that the chap who currently owns them is unsure wether to part with them or toying with the idea of fitting them to something else, i'm trying to convince him that would NOT be a good idea!lol

using my old tas mounts turned out to be a real pain in the ass, as the engine would just not line up correctly, resulting in this post;
http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79715
but after much fitting, removing, and re-fitting of the o/s/f mount i finally got it somewhere i was happy with.

John

Now i seem to have mislaid the pics from the rest of the build, so i've re-taken some today.
here's a liitle tip for you all too, if you're using a a cav or late dis xe, then there's a small lug on the lower half of the inlet manifold, that fouls on the clutch cable. I foolishly didn't fit the clutch cable before the engine, and so had to remove the inlet manifold when in the car. I also had to bin it and fit a mk2 astra item, and even then it only just clears, i'll post some pics of what i mean soon, have left manifold at work!

ok, tie bars fitted, along with some powerflex bushes, i decided against fitting an anti roll bar, after reading some of the pros and cons, so went for the thickest tie bars i could get. iirc they're 22mm of a diesel.

next suspension, i went for yellow bilstein b8's, and some custom made springs from coilsprings89. I can't recomend them enough, they are 40 at the front and 50 at the rear, arrived before my cheque had even cleared!!
front brakes are 256mm with grooved and drilled ebc discs, and green stuff pads, (will be binned soon though, i'm non too keen, were ok on the astra i removed them from though) all metal lines renewed, and braided hoses fitted all round.

yeah as vaughn says they're standard fit on gl's.

longlive it doesn't need rear belts at that age, i have a complete set though, but i don't fancy carrying the missus or little'un round in it!lol

Lol, no that's Chris's brother, Matt. Mine has'nt seen the road since I brought it! Ongoing project that has'nt been touched for the last 2 years:( Will be making a start sometime in the near future though, most of the shell is finished, arches, paint etc. Just finishing the bay ready for paint and got a half cage to go in then send the bottom end for some work to get the donkey finished!

Time and money are the biggest hold up TBH.....

John
07-08-07, 09:21 PM
ok i've not really liked the steelies ever since i fitted them, and have been looking for a set of either period or euro alloys, so imagine my surprise when this thread popped up!
http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=84569
so with a shopping trip with the family to chester on sunday, i collected them on my way home. (cheers lee!)
Now i hadn't really looked at the thread properly, so when i got them home i was pleased to find that they were ATS classics! (mahoosive on the dub scene) And they have a gm stamp in them too. ( a bit of research has found that they are manta a rims) they're 6x13 with a 30mm offset. they are in need of a full refurb but are fecking superb!
Tyre choice has been a bit of a mare though, and after trying a coupe of sizes today, i've settled upon 175/60/13,s.
so here's some pics of the first trial fit tonight. They're gonna be tight! Arches will need to be fully rolled!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/100_1749.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/100_1747-1.jpg
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/100_1748.jpg
you can see in those pics that the arch needs two small repairs, ( the lower was an mot advisory) but apart from that they're quite solid.
All i have to decide now is what colour do i have the rims, black? black with chrome detailing? silver? oh and the car needs to sit lower too, and i need some new front brakes, hmm this is gonna be quite a challenge methinks!:thumb:

Adam
07-08-07, 09:25 PM

That bubbly rust an mot advisory? how come?
Is it spreading to the sill?

Steve
07-08-07, 09:27 PM
Black with silver round the spokes if that makes sense?!

As in silver going around the inside of the spokes, cant think of an example of them but ive always liked that combo. They do look diffrent though!

I got an advisory for mine as well as its within 6 inches of the chassis, and considered to be structural

Also as mentioned before, (but just cant remember!) what brakes are you fitting under 13s?

yeah thats what i've been thinking, chrome pinstiping effect, just to outline the shapes on the rim, not inside on the flat areas.

personally i prefer the steelies........

why not get a set of steelies..................widened..and then the typre stretched for the euro look...

it would really suit that car imo

i've a set of 14inch sri wheels........whick i thought about getting done(but i dont really know if the euro look is for me personally)

this kinda thing here...only maybe just not as wide(and a different colour aswell ha ha)

Dave

i think i'd have to admit i'm agreed here dave, i 've been messing with them for a couple of weeks now, and i'm still not entirely convinced. They'd need to be at least 7" wide to get the stretch euro look, and that would mean either splitting them, or binning them as these are only 6" wide. I think i'd be better off sticking to my 7" wide steel plan. (similar to those on that pic of the saloon.), rather than spending on these, only to be not happy when they're done.
As the bodywork is staying standard, i reckon the wheels will either make it or ruin it, hmm, rethink required.

long time no update!, well since i last posted it's lost all the mudflaps (looks much better, but now i think it needs to go lower!), and i've fitted a period mountney steering wheel. Oh and i finally fitted my club sticker!
I have an ever growing list of jobs to do over winter, including, renewing the fuel lines, sorting the fuel pressure, fitting the standard sfi box back on, possibly a pair of cams/chip, fitting the dust guards on the rear shockers, sorting the exhaust, (possibly considering a jp system, depending on price, or i'll wait and see how dougies turns out!) The brake are also way passed their best, so i may replace them with some new (possibly courtenay) grooved 256's, and i'm also considering a rear disc conversion, but using astra g stuff. All of the brake work depends on if i manage to complete my widened 13" steels of course! in which case i may use some tarox discs and harsh pads. The bodywork is getting a bit shabby here and there, i was tempted to tidy it up, but i think it kinda adds to the character of the car, (kinda ratish!!) so i'll leave it as it is for the time being
Anyway more pics when i've configured my camera to my new laptop!

ok another small update;

Not touched it for weeks now, apart from removing the exhaust to fit a more subtle system. the current centre section was standard! Thanks to baxter for my new system, it's a sportex, but it'll be losing the shinee tailpipe for something less shouty. Also removed the powercap, and will be removing the snowplough shortly to sort the messy front panel.
The steels are going too, to be replaced by some rfx's for road use. (i did buy some th's but didn't think they'd suit as much as rfx's so sold them on)
I also have some show wheels in the pipeline, needless to say they're wide, 13" and made of steel.
I'm also going to experiment with some -60 rear springs too.
Pics asap, i promise!

How about just spraying the chrome tip mattblack?
Should make it look more subtle.

Nah, i'm feeling the need to remove it altoghether, for a less obvious mild steel pipe the same diameter as the rest of the system, plus it exits the bumper at an angle, and i want it exiting straight.

Hmmm, still undecided as yet what to do with it. If i hide it i'll have a cut out hole in the bumper where the exhaust should be. I still reckon a 2 1/4 or 1/2 pipe would be ideal, could go for side slashed though?

Ok Ok, some would say i'm indecisive, me? i'm not sure! Had a spare half hour today sooooo;Right after having a set of compomotive th's and a set of rfx's lined up for daily wheels, i decided that they just wouldn't suit, so back the the ats classics! dabbled with a new size of tyre this time though, namely 175/50/13. I think they look much better being 13". Only prob now is it sits way too high! Thats after fitting -60mm rear springs! Coilovers??

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/004-1.jpg.

Need to save some more funds now for the other 3 tyres!! They're well dear in yoko fitment! Need to decide on a colour for the rims too.

Also had some time to mess with the exhaust;

Ok, had a couple of hours on the car yesterday. Started off by removing the stock 1.2 centre section. Then started to fit the sportex system i bought off the general.
Started by cutting the sr front pipe and mating it to a mk2 astra 16v standard pipe. (same bore)

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/005-3.jpg

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/004-2.jpg

Then trail fitted the whole system, needed lots of tweeking as the handbrake cable on the early rear beam sits high and proud due to it being in a slider, and i needed it to clear.

Mocked up a tailpipe out of some bits of stainless i had lying around

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/006-2.jpg

All welded up and back box on, after a quick lick of black paint around welds.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/011-1.jpg

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/020-1.jpg

Much stealthier i think, and considerably quieter than the old magnex system and standard centre. Probably due to the fact the magnex back box is weeny compared to the sportex one.

Also removed the 256 front brakes and cleaned and fitted the 236's in order that the 13's clear. The wheels only just cover the retainers, it's that close!!

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/008-2.jpg

Also removed the front bumper in order to get the front panel cleaned and painted.

http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/012.jpg

And that's about all for now, parked it back up again, but just couldn't resist this shot. It looks well sweet imo!!

i'll be running the ats's just for daily running. They're 6x13 and i'll be running 175/50/13's.
The banded steels i have on order will be 7" wide and i'll be runing 165/60/13's on them. That'll give quite a nice stretch, but nothing too ott.

Nah not really, started a new job this week so have been busy. Bandeds are on their way back to me as we speak. Car is in the garage on axle stands atm as i've sold the suspension in order that i can buy some new coilovers to get it that bit lower. Bloody useless dvla have still not sent the logbook back either! Oh and the gearbox is pi$$ing all over the garage floor! Might go and strip it now and get 2x driveshaft seals and a diff pan gasket on order.

peester
01-03-08, 12:05 PM
how long has it taken, thus far with dvla changes??

John
01-03-08, 12:45 PM
how long has it taken, thus far with dvla changes??

About 10 months! I sent the logbook off as soon as i'd mot'd it last year. At the same time i taxed it in order to make to pvs, on the old 1200cc engine. The dvla then sent the logbook back saying that the car would have to go to shrewsbury for an "inspection" as it was currently licensed and i need to pay more for it obviously being 2.0. They needed to cancel the old rfl, then issue a new one there and then. Now the problem with this is that they don't open on saturdays, and are only open in the weeks "office hours", so i'd have to take a day off work to sort it out. (they were worried about me driving it on the road whilst it had no rfl, i explained this wasn't a problem as the insurance had then lapsed:roll: and i couldn't make it to shrewsbury unless it was on a trailer, but they are obvilously, quite completely, brain dead)
As far as i was concerned i had notified them that it was a 2.0 and the ball was in their court. I never heard any more and then 2 months later they then re-issued a log book with the 1200 engine in!
So i've simply waited for the rfl to expire, and re-submitted it with the 2.0 details on, that was on the 2nd of feb, and still no sign of the logbook.
I've searched on other forums and it just seems it all depends on which person opens the logbook at the dvla, as different people end up with different conclusions to their "engine logbook upgrade"
One word - tards.

Matt GTE
01-03-08, 08:26 PM
One word - tards.
I'll go along with that... when I changed mine from 1.0 to 1.6 they sent the V5 back with the new engine number but it still said it was a 1.0 so had to send it off again. Came back fairly quick both times though.

Yeah Baby! Ok, so after weeks of waiting for my wheels, they finally arrived today! To say i'm chuffed with them is an understatement! The quality of the workmanship is absolutely spot-on! They just need finishing now, the welds on the outer face need some tidying, the welds inner need treating with resin just in case of any air leaks, and then they need sandblasting and painting! (oh and i need some tyres too) I had a quick mock up on the car just to see how they'd look, I'll let the piccys do the talking!
(please excuse the lack of struts, i have coilovers on order too:D )

depending on whether your machine allows clockwise or anti rotation, just be sure to add enough downward pressure on the 2nd bead, then to inflate you need to put lateral force onto the tyre to pop it on.

let me know how you get on, lol, you'll swear a few times - but its hilarious
