John how deep are the front dishes on your rims? strange question i know but all will become clear ;)
oooh, i don't know? i'll have to check for you.
*nods head* Cool wheels John. Are they 13's or 14's? look small but it could be the huge dish lol :D
Any chance of 'cheaper than wide-wheels' gen? Do they come with the certificate as well?
What happened to the equally as cool ATS Classics?

Hi mate, they're 13's. No certificate but not too bothered as they'll only be for show. The ats's will be for normal use.
Quality of the workmanship is outstanding though, the welds are awesome.
The wheels look great mate!

Where did you get yours done John? I only found wide-wheels in UK but am looking at places in Europe. :)
Too right, there's tons of places here in Holland that do steelies. Charge around 25(ish) euro per wheel, that'll be like ?18(ish) in proper money.
If anyone ever stops by in nanny state Holland, I'd be more than happy to help out.
Cheers,
Niek

Ha Ha i recognise that tape player, my dad had one in his Manta GTE Exclusive, still got it sat on the shelf downstairs.
Small update, had a large delivery from chris astley today, only to discover it wasn't the right stuff. Hopefully chris is on the case and i'll get it soon!
Mini gearbox overhaul carried out over the weekend too, new driveshaft seals, diff pan gasket, and fresh oil, hope it doesn't pee all over the floorpan now!
Hmmm, still waiting, turning out to be quite a big cock up tbh. (not the fault of chris by the way)

Thats such a pain when that happens and so dissapointing!:(
What are you waiting on?
My new suspension. Even more annoying as the car is on axle stands in the garage and has been for the past 6 weeks, with no suspension.
STILL waiting for my log book too! At this rate it won't be at pvs.

its this bit that puts me off too.. :-(
hope it works out for u mate.
i dont get how dvla can keep your logbook for so long, we sent mine off and expected a 2-4 month wait, within a week i got it back, scrap marker removed, and it all down in my name, wouldve thought that wouldve taken alot longer, dvla.. get your prorities sorted
Johns not changing names/owners.
Hes trying to change the engine size.
He's having exactly the same problem i had, dvla bunch of to**ers
Woohoo! today i've finally received my logbook! At long last! Just need my new suspension now!
Tyres for the steelies are on order, and i should be able to paint the steels and front panel some time over the weekend.
Result! What suspension are you changing to? Im not overly sure about my setup, still tends to understeer when you're pushing hard through the twistys.
changing to coilovers steve;)
Another small update! As i have no suspension, paint for wheels, or tyres i though i'd fit these today.
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/030-3.jpg
and 10 minutes later fitted!
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/031.jpg
I won't re-tighten the bolts untill i've fitted the suspension.
Also big thanks to mark for sorting me these.

Parts had better start arriving this week!
yeee-haaaa!
Today, after what seems like an eternity (2 1/2 months) my coilovers finally arrived! Just need to see if i can use the existing rubber top mount on them as i can't afford uprated top mounts atm. There's still a problem with them though but i can't be assed faffing with them this close to pvs so they can stay as they are for now.

Lol, one front spring is 350lb, the other is 250lb! I'd ordered 275's. They took so long 'cos i'd ordered them through chris astley, chris sent me a set out that turned out to be for a mk4 astra, so then had to sort all the hassle out with gaz, ending in me only getting them today.
Nice collection of parts there, John was the pics of the sunroof any good?
Hi mate, sorry forgotten all about that! Will dig the photos out and have another butchers and let you know.:thumb:
Ok, a bit more progress made tonight, i top coated the wheels! (first time with 2k) Don't worry there's no runs, (yet) i've made a point of making the welds visible. There's a couple of reactions here and there, i can only presume the tack cloth picked something up and i wiped it over the surface of each wheel. . Never mind, they won't be getting re-done. Quite happy overall though.
Also my tyres turned up too, wish me luck fitting these babys!
It also looks like i may have to attack the arches quite severly too to get them to fit, hope i don't run out of time or funds before pvs!

Ok, so i've been having a bit more of a fiddle, fitted the coilovers tonight, rears clear with no arch mods. Bit dissapointed the front doesn't go that low, but i suppose i've had to compromise with the xe handling etc, and also the fact that i've retained the original top mounts. (i'm presuming spherical top mounts will gain me a bit) Also had a mare with the paint on the wheels, but that's a long story!
Fitted a tyre on a rim too and had a bit of a play. I'm really chuffed with the outcome, tis the look i've been trying to acheive down to a tee! Rear arches will need minmal work (thank god!) Hopefully i can have some more time on it at the weekend, and get it out in the daylight!

cheers all, tyres are quite stretched, it just doesn't show very well in the pics. It looks better in the flesh. Trying to find a lower profile tyre is virtually impossible, i tried almost every on line supplier, and these were the lowest i could find. Pirelli list a 165/55/13, but i was given the price of £53 each, and no date for a next batch to be produced.
Can you get an Opel centre cap for the 14" wheel, I've been watching German Ebay but have not yet seen any for sale

Just a quick couple of pics from pvs. The trip has highlighted a few issues that need sorting, the major one being fuel starvation, hopefully have this cured for billing by fitting a gte tank and extenal pump. Need a new n/s rear tyre too after a puncture on the way home, turns out i must have hit something in the road as the sidewall has come away inside the tyre.
Thanks to all for the positive feedback over the wheels, almost everyone i spoke to wanted to know more!

Also had LOADS of folks asking where they could get the midlands area sticker too, lets hope we have a few new members/forum users!
Looks awesome
Whats the fuel starvation problem, what tank are you using?
Carb iirc, ive recently changed mine to the gte setup and its miles better now.
Cheers breeny/ad!
It's currently using an spi tank with a v6 vectra internal pump, which doesn't fit all that well in the tank tbh. I've never been that happy with it. Gets a bit of starvation under heavy accelleration/cornering! Need to do the fuel lines in copper too.
i do like this john it is a nice example of how it should be done...
I take it you have to be very careful with pot holes etc with the banded steelies then?
Any plans to lower the car anymore at all as it looks like it needs to be hugging the tyres. I know this could cause some problems with scrubbage but its all fun.

No not really tbh, The puncture i had only deflated instantly as the tyres run inner tubes, they'd actually be better without them.
As for the lowering i need to mod the rear arches over winter, both 1/4 will need re-painting. The front coilovers are on the bumpstops in the pics! The rear will go right down.;)
Hmm, should be fine on that tank.
Mines fine(even round combe etc)
But i use a mk3 astra pump. Maybe the veccy one doesnt fit in the tank too well, and so doesn't pump 100%
you need some shorter springs :)
you need some shorter springs :)
lol It's already on 8" springs at the front!
Seriously though, it's still on the original rubber top mounts, so i'm hoping i can gain a few extra mm by fitting concentric mounts.
Count Vaux Alot
17-06-08, 08:12 PM
mine is about the same height at the front and the coilovers are at their lowest too??

Ive actually rang koni today (motorsport dept.) and they sell 4",6",7" and 8" at a number of poundage rates coilover springs for around £25+.. ready to go, in stock..
I have the chaps name and number at work, if needs be.
Cool, I'll bear that in mind dave. I take it your thinking of getting some shorter fronts dave? I reckon i'd have to try some 6 or 7" ones with a higher poundage rate.

18-06-08, 09:51 PM
aye, ive a bit to learn about the poundage rates still tbh..
I do want to loose an inch or so off the height of the spring, to take a smidge off the front ride height and to be able to wind back up the thread a bit so im not permanently at the end of the thread..
So you have to go a bit higher poundage if going smaller on spring height??
Its on 180lbs now, i think.. And they look about 8 or 10 " in height..?

Well glad i made it to billing again this year, best show of the calendar imo! car will need a little tlc as i hadn't cured the fuelling fault before i left, making it a sh*t to drive at times. (hmm twin carbs needed Lol) I'm in 2 minds over the wheels too, as it feels awful on the road, and will perhaps have to re-think. Although they look good, the driving experience is naff. Hey will, yeah shame we missed one another, some other time!
Do you know will, i have to whole heartedly agree with you here. In hindsight, i should have gone an inch wider with them, coupled with the fact that i can't get any better "fitting tyres". believe it or not the gaz's are on the bump stops at the front, and to go down further at the rear i'm going to have to do some serious arch mods. I may bite the bullet and sell them on, and re-fit the 6x13 ats with the 175/50/13s that i trialed earlier on in the thread. They still look old skool enough for me, and the car will handle loads better.
Thanks for the pic dec! good to chat to you, and really chuffed for you for your win. Thouroughly spurring me on to make a start with mine. (which incidentally i bought off will!) Lol at me looking like i'm going to a mid 90's rave in the pic too!

Continental do a sweet looking 195/45-13 and (as you already know...) several manufacturers do a 175/50-13.
Reet cool but you'll probably need another gear to compensate for the microscopic rolling radius. :)
Hi niek! I've already trailled a 175/50/13 yoko on them, and the stretch wasn't that much. I'd love to see what a 195/45 looks like fitted though!

Yay, thats why I wanted to chat - see how my old sport was doing!
On the wheel front - it looks good, but it could look better! And it would be a shame not to do that car justice - I love it! ;)
Thanks Benn, love your wheels more!
Cheers dude, are your wheels standard?
Rexy, think i'll keep them for a bit, i'll get the mk1 cav ats's refurbed and see what they look like.
Will, not made much progress with the sport i'm afraid! I did start a wip on here, but haven't touched it for ages.
I keep having mad ideas about starting this one again, i keep seeing so many things i could re-do/change, plus the bodywork is starting to show it's age, we'll see though! (lottery win would be good!)
Benn, they're the original 4 and a half j rims, which have been banded to 8".
Ok, no update for a bit so here goes!
Right, firstly i decided to upgrade my shafts for some with larger outer cv's, from my gte ones. Unfortunately the seller let me down after i'd already sold mine, and didn't have the decency to let me know. (****, you know who you are!) So that left me with a car on stands with no shafts for weeks, until i spotted a set of courtenay ones for sale on here the other day. They should hopefully be with me before next week.
The banded steels have now been sold, to make way for the ats' to go back on after they've had a refurb, not that bothered tbh.
The engine bay is looking a bit bare after i decided to do a bit of upgrading!

The standard inlet/injection being binned in order to make way for these.....
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/005-7.jpg
Still need to buy an sbd inlet, and some misab washers, change the fuel tank and fit some new fuel lines.
Looking at the bay now, i'm tempted to drop the engine out, and do some seam welding. There's only the mounts and a few hoses! Obviously the bulkhead sound deadening will have to go too, so i'm also tempted to lose the header tank and washer bottle into the scuttle area for a smoother look. Hidden loom is also tempting now too.
Hmmm, i can see this turning into a re-rebuild!

very tasty we car this.
Definately agree on the sound deadening :thumb:
The rest seems a nice idea, providing you can see the point in making things hard to get to, should you need quick access :)
Yeah, i'd forgotten about the bloody stuff till i opened the bonnet the other day!
Hiding the tanks will make the bay look more "equal" imo, i'll just have to live with the access issue olly! :)
trackdaynova
20-08-08, 10:06 PM
oh yeah deffo, with losing the air filter from the LHS of the bay, the RHS does look very heavy, with brake stuffs, washer and header tank...
:thumb: go frit!
Do it dude, smoothed engine bays rule, love the carbs.. i still wanna fit mine.

HMMM me likes the sound of these plans (i have thought about this on mine eversince i put the engine in!) If you want any advice on the carb fittings and other bits you don't think of (like the alt fouling the bottom of the feckin carbs) just let me know...

Are you going to edition 38 next weekend??
Will be cool with the carbs on John. Will suit the style/age of the car :)
Cheers for the xe bits :D
Can see the sport taking a bit longer to rebuild now John.

Hi matey, i have a feeling i may be asking your advice! I'm ordering the the sbd inlet, i take it that's the one you have? How did you get around the alternator issue?
nah not going next weekend mate, you?
Graeme, Lol, yeah probably so. this will have to go at some point to fund the sport project though.
Ad, no worries whatsover, good to chat as always.
Have you got the Ats' on yet John??? Any Pics???

Yeah, not much progress at all i'm afraid chaps. I'm busy fitting my new kitchen atm, what a ball ache, as it was a kitchen attatched to a downstairs bathroom, so i took the bathroom out to make one large kitchen.
Anyways, i started fitting the carbs, and it looks like i'm going to have to make some sort of alternator front mounted, and that's as far as i've got. Tbh, all enthusiasm i had for the car is dwindling fast.

so you havent figured out or have and cant use the alternator in the original position? what manifold are you running? ill take a pic off mine if you want i am sure i said that before! lol
Hi mate, nah, the problem i'm having is that if i drop the original alternator any further, i'm going to have to do some serious chassis leg mods! It currently looks like this. The carb won't go anywhere near!!

Speak to Geordie Chris he has 45s with a xe not sure how much chassis leg modding he did
corsakid
05-10-08, 12:03 PM
i didnt do any chassis leg modification! no more than the usual xe conversion
He hasn't done the usual xe chassis leg mod(cut out/boxed)
He just cut the leg pushed it back, and then welded the cut back up.
Hence why he cant lower the alt :)
corsakid
05-10-08, 01:23 PM
you have manifold off cant you take alternator and modifiy chassis leg? pics coming of how i installed mine as said before my alternator isnt lowered its in the same position as when it had standard manifold so i dont get the part about lowering it! surely you wont lower the alternator with out making a new bracket to bolt to the block which in my eyes is just as much work as modifing the chassis leg, couldnt you just use a smaller alternator which would retain the smae mounting brackets? will uses a 1600 internal fan alternator and he swapped the pulley, a smaller alternator belt is required but thats nothing a 5 min trip down the local motor factors wont sort
SBD do a alternator lowering kit i think.
So he would need a lowering kit, and then need to cut/mod the chassis.
corsakid
05-10-08, 01:28 PM
smaller alternator no modifications!
When i saw it, even a small alternator would be cutting it fine tbh...
The alt atm would be sitting about half way up the carb if you get me.
It must be the inlet John has.
Which is stamped Jenvey, whereas all the older ones had sbd on them......
corsakid
05-10-08, 01:36 PM
yeah but surely the manifolds all have to very similar because i know you are aware that the carbs must be horizontal for them to work correctly so i cant see it being that much different angle wise! i have neither an sbd one nor a jenvey, its not a parallel throttle body manifold is it which would explain why its stamped jenvey which are very similar as carbs mounting wise etc, pics coming now
Yes, but dont forget you can have a manifold that sits higher, but still level ;)
Like so:
Old sbd etc
____________
/
/
/
/
New jenvey
____________
/
/
Still horizontal, just not as high if you get me(hence the carbs sit nearer/touching the alt). Thats where i think the problem on Johns is tbh.
Edit-Pic on paint lol (laptop mouse pads are hard to use lol)

Thats the only possible difference in the inlet that would give the clearence problem???

05-10-08, 01:57 PM
youll see form pics mine is quite shallow height wise
i made an L shape braket so the alternator tensioner can stay in same place as on original inlet manifold
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/DSC00318.jpg
this is how is sits not lowered in standard position
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/DSC00319.jpg
excuse the seem sealer needs tidying up lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/DSC00325.jpg
and this is the manifold i am using doesnt have the alternator slider mounting hole hence the bracket
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/DSC00324.jpg
obviously it has to be different to johns manifold as its 1 a different make and 2 i had no problems only the mounting the alternaotr tensioner slider
Looking at those pics, your inlet/carbs is easily 1 or 2 inches higher up than Johns sits
corsakid
05-10-08, 02:29 PM
i cant see there being 1 " let alone 2" different where do the carbs sit in realation to the fire wall with mine removed my trumpets sit about 1mm off the battery tray level
can see difference angles do look similar
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l240/tooleater16v/027-3.jpg
mine angle from dizzy side of head
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/DSC00326.jpg
obviously i have 90mm trumpets on but they basically sit on the bulkhead 1-2mm clearence
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/DSC00327.jpg
What bottom alternator bracket is john using? Is there a difference or is there anotehr bracket that will allow the alternator to sit lower?
If not maybe modify the lower bracket so it brings it down?
corsakid
05-10-08, 02:35 PM
john have you got he right alternator/bracket combo on there the only reason i ask is your alternator looks really high, manifold looks ok but height of alternaotr looks worng to me the 12v feed and ind wire are on the top of alt where on mine and everyone elses i know are on the bottom,
If the alt was sitting too high, the tensioner lever off the standard inlet would not line up with the hole in the alt

Corsa kid are yours 40 or 45's?
John i had exactly the same issue with mine (you should have called me!) using the jenvey who are sbd manifold i think it was the 7 or 9 degree?? As i think the manifold is positioned a little low to keep the cards level as seen here:
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/170420081348.jpg
Anyway you have a number of options:
1. As said before lower alternator using a custom bracket (as i did see why below) but this requires more chassis leg mods as previously stated (and is a pain in the balls) and having a bracket made which took me ages and was very trial and error
2. Use one of SBD's smaller alternator jobs and possibly still need chassis mods. This is the SBD set up on a westfield i spied when having my RR tune (yes i was gusting a full on hard on at the time) but they are only available with SBD's multi V pullys and i'm not sure if the single V would fit.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/220720081656.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/220720081655.jpg
They actually use a smaller GM bracket seen at the lower left conner of the alt here but not sure what its from??
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/220720081654.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/220720081653.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/220720081652.jpg
3. Front mount the alternator were the pas pump on an xe usually goesas Mark said, this i believe would be your best option and the route i would have taken is my fecking simpson manifold wasn't in the way! Speak to mark as at least two of the JOV boys have them.
Gordie chis cut some of the alernator casting away to fit his i think which is an option but not great IMO.
Hope that helps like i said get in touch if you need any more help! :thumb:

05-10-08, 07:16 PM
i am not sure who makes it to be honest it has got the coolant pipe at bottom like yours and john's i had to use an old 8v hose from back of water pump to plastic pipe which bypasses the manifold, just like a 45 degree bend but vauxhall pipe, all i know about the manifold is its got gm-miles stamped on it

James, yeah sorry i've not rung, just finished kitchen mods for today so i'm off for a bath! Yeah mine is the exact same manifold as yours, only i'm running dhlas. So what did you do with the lower bracket? specially made one?
Mark, i've spoken to chris over on jov, and he must have the same manifold as corsakid, as he only modded the top mounting bracket, making a rose jointed one.
I'm thinking my only option now if for a front mount. So does anyone have any pics of a front mount on an xe?

No probs mate i understand your busy and i'm about when ever if not then thats fine too.
Mine are also DHLA's too and yes i made a custome bottom bracket basically the same design as the standard one only with the wholes slotted (elongated) so i could move the alt up and down to a position were clearance was acceptable. i will add though that the alt is dropped over an inch from standard and i'm not 100% happy as it would have been better front mounted for clearance!

I brought the front mount conversion off Chris. I am currentley in the process of 'improving' it. I gather it worked fine etc though on his car which was track orientated.
More info soon.
John-How far away from the chassis leg is your bottom pully? Did you just have the outer V machined off, leaving the middle parts and the outer v, like so:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v86/Nova-crew/Photo-0003.jpg
Yep that's exactly how i've done mine ad, i've heard some horror stories about folks who've actually machined through the rubber mount, (well the whole lot really) reducing it's width/strength.
It clears the chassis leg fine ad, prob 10mm or so to spare? Mind you i did have some engine mount alignment issues though, so you may find a little less.
Cool, i'll see how it goes.
Have you had a look on the front of the engine block, theres quite a few spare threads you could bolt an alternator bottom mount onto maybe using an adaptor plate or something?
Yeah, i have an old cav p/s bracket kicking around somewhere, i'll see if i can dig it out and have a play. I reckon the standard xe alternator will be no use though as it looks too big. What ampage is the standard xe alternator?
Depends on the car. Probably on a v-belt early engine 50-60amp. Later ones are likely to be 70+.
Std nova ones are about 55a
Cool ta mate, will have a nose round the scappies when i get 5!
If you make up some custom bracket jobbie, you could maybe look for a alt off a small car in the scrappy and make the bracket to fit it.
Any should be fine really, theres not going be massive load on a nova alternator.
Yeah, i reckon something jap will suffice, They normally have nice small aternators lol. Nothing a bit of bodging won't fix.

Dude its a sad day...
"Another one bite the dust"
You not getting rid????????
Hopefully making way for the sport rebuild?
Hmmm, not really sure tbh benn!
Times have been hard at work over the past 4 months or so, all overtime has been stopped, as well as bonuses etc, so what used to be quite a good job, has been poorly paid over those months, meaning the nova engine+bit+carbs etc have all had to go to make up the shortcomings.
Bit gutted tbh, but at the end of the day it's only a car i suppose.
Anyway, i have the following options,
1, sell as a going concern/rolling shell.
2, bang the original 1.2 back in, mot and sell on.
3, turn the 1.2 into a 1.4 using 1.3 crank and rods etc, keep and enjoy for a little longer!
However i recently purchased another nova, which is a little less rarer than this, and ripe for a few mods, so this may go whatever.
I'm at that balding 30 something stage in my life where I'm asking my self, do i really need a fast nova? And yes Graeme i really must get and do something with my sport!

I see where your coming from John but you built it, showed it and drove it. I personally think you did the car justice, I think most people have suffered losses of some discription as far as work is concerned. I think you should sell up and crack on with the sport and if need be wait til things pick up. Don't sell up completely though, I hated not having a car to tinker with in times of boredom
i think seeing as you know the shell well, i'd be tempted the throw a E/C16 in there and enjoy it..
Hmm, shell would make a cool mk1 track car
