have a look at rally cars.... most dont have cam belt covers

I've run without a cam belt cover for a long time, but the pulley wheel does seem to get a bit bashed up from that. You may aswell use one, better safe than sorry. Rally cars don't have them, but then they probably don't use the same engine for that long either.
