hey i was just wondering what fuel people are using to get the most out of their engines ? e.g. normal unleaded or optimax unleaded and the other vertions. and what settings to have the octane plug set on?
benny
Super unleaded. VPower sent my engine up the swanny lol
Normal unleaded unless your engine has a knock sensor.
Or you have a 97RON ron plug(most/all nova engines have 91/95)
Ive never used super unleaded lol

Mine was pinking alot before but i found BP optimax sorted that straight out!

Standard unleaded is 95ron, it will pink if you have the ron plug on 97.

ok and what are the tell tail signs of pinking?
Mettallic clanging/rattling with the engine under load.
Id just leave the plug on 95Ron no matter what fuel you use.
Theres probably 1/2 hp gain on 97ron, pretty much un-noticeable.

ok so 1-2 hp gain and more damage to the engine or cleaner burning?
Ben
Well, if you leave it pinking/detting you soon wont have an engine...Lol

the engine ive just put in has a knock sensor! what does it do and why will running it on nomal unleaded make a difference?
If its a e16se it aint a knock sensor, its a oil temp sensor :)

I would

Nah it dont have one :thumb:

A knock sensor is essentially a microphone which listens to the engine and tells the ECU if the fuel is pre-detonating (knocking). Some ECU's can then retard the timing to reduce pre-detonation. Very handy on a turbo engine, as compressed air = hotter = more likely to pre-detonate.
My old engine pre ignited on 95 ron, i had to run 97 or above to get it to run properly. This was mainly due to the comp ratio it was running though.

ok so really trial and error to see what the cars engine is bes suited to?
Benny
Unless your running an engine tuned to run on high octane fuel, it will make bog all difference apart from making you skinter IMO.

What fuel was it mapped on?
It was mapped on 98 (optimax). We couldnt map it on 95 as we had to retard the ignition so much it was losing power.
Ahh right.
I might spend out, and try some super unleaded one day lol lol
