lol:eek:lol

Film board have banned manhunt 2 in the UK (better get a copy of ebay then!).

Is this a dark day for video gaming and censorship?

Who decides what we can "play"?

Thoughts...

dunno - but apparantly they said it was so bad they couldnt even suggest edits or cut scenes to Rockstar games because the whole thing was shocking!
They reckon it's "bleak" - like the weather I guess...

Heres the report - (from a Wii site)

UK, June 19, 2007 - Manhunt 2 (http://wii.ign.com/objects/883/883115.html) on Wii and PlayStation 2 has been banned after the British Board of Film Classification refused to give the game a rating due to its "unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone... which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing".

Speaking about the ban, BBFC director David Cooke director said that to issue a certificate to Manhunt 2 "would involve a range of unjustifiable harm risks, to both adults and minors, within the terms of the Video Recordings Act, and accordingly that its availability, even if statutorily confined to adults, would be unacceptable to the public".

He went on to explain that it was a decision that hadn't been taken lightly and normally the board would "try to consider cuts or, in the case of games, modifications which remove the material that contravenes the BBFC's guidelines." However, because the violent themes run so deeply throughout the game the BBFC couldn't recommend cuts that would allow Manhunt 2 a UK release, although Rockstar does have the right to appeal against the decision.

Cooke said: "Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing. There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game."

The ban may come as a suprises to some, considering the original Manhunt game - which courted much controversy and also featured violent themes and brutal killings - was given an 18 certificate by the BBFC in 2003. However, David Cooke said that the sequel couldn't be viewed in the same context. "The game's unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying and the sheer lack of alternative pleasures on offer to the gamer, together with the different overall narrative context, contribute towards differentiating this submission from the original Manhunt game," he explained.

Carmaggedon is the only other videogame to be refused classification by the BBFC. The ban was overturned in 1997 after publisher SCi and developer Stainless Games appealed against the decision and the humans - which you ran over in the game - were replaced with zombies to make the experience less visceral and offensive.

Rockstar has yet to comment on the ban despite several attempts to contact them. We'll keep you updated with further developments throughout the day.

Well, any cause that may make you violent must be banned. Next you'll have to use rubber hammers and plastic knives lol

The government and it's bodies are only looking out for you.

The problem with the church thing in RFOM was that it was modelled on the actual cathedral, rather than just being some randomly drawn church. The pope or one of his underlings had a bit of a whinge about it. Would they prefer that the evil dooers who you are shooting at were to take up residence in their place of worship? and use it as a HQ for all of their evil doings? I think not!

Stuart
20-06-07, 08:26 AM
and the church dont do evil things, like bum choir boys?....... oh sorry that little missdemenour goes away as its the church and they are "alowed" to do that.

i heard someone say the other day "people like that shouldnt be allowed to reproduce".

errr, hello, people like that wont reproduce, all the want to do is chuck their muck over a choirboys cheeks.

Stuart

"people like that shouldnt be alowed to live" might be more of a valid comment.

The problem with those types of video games, is that the social retards that have been allowed to watch/play those types of things at the age of 2 by mummy and daddy, can't recognise the difference between reality and a video game.

Disappointed to say the least.

The first one was amusing.

Essentially the whole Manhunt series was based around finding different ways/objects to kill people.... wholesome family entertainment if you ask me.

"The game made me violent" is a classic excuse from someone who's been caught and is to much of a gimp to admit it.

Murder is in everyone... but most are able to keep it under control.
For example... how many of you killed bugs in the garden as soon as you could walk? Classic example is the daughter in Kill Bill 2. She takes her goldfish out the bowl and stamps on it. She knows what will happen but does it anyway as she's curious.

Just because I play Gears of War doesnt mean I'm gonna pop to Homebase and buy a chainsaw to chop people up with.

I'm rambling... I'll shut up now.

This is really disappointing. Manhunt 2 was the first Wii game I was really looking forward to. There seems to have been a bit of a good game drought of late.

I'm off to America in a few weeks so hopefully I'll be able to pick up a copy over there.

Stuart

pick up a few. bet you could sell them on for decent profit.

OBV as i gave you this idea i get one for cost lol.
I too was looking forward to turning the happy friendly wii into a killing machine

Shizzle, I'll blame my next speeding ticket on NFSC, that should get me off.

Its all good, free marketing for the game anyway.

I think Rockstar have been blackballed by the censors now - no matter what they release (unless it involves fluffy bunnies) it'll get banned or censored.

The school bully game (canne mind the name) was the last one that got them into hot bother...

It'll get released - they cant not release it due to the money pumped into it - they'll just cut HUGE sections out of it - or more like Rockstar they'll lock big gory sections with "secret passwords" like San Andreas that some geeky nerd will crack ijn 5 seconds and the flood the net with the hack for free!

As said - it's all hype that (like their other games) will make the latest Rockstar game ther biggest ever.

Oh - and the latest is that the censors had a "word" with the makers of the latest Tomb Raider game - scale Lauras tits down a couple a bra sizes or it's gonna get shelved!!!

You LOOKIN at ma Bra

hoptfully it will get a full uncut release in europe so it can be purchased... a US copy would be in Never The Same Colour as opposed to PAL.

thats just laughable. you cant scale down lara crofts breasts - they're what made the sodding franchise what it is.

Yeah but the "hot coffee" section in San Andreas caused them bother after it was discovered. Imagine what would happen if Rockstar said they'd cleaned up Manhunt 2, only for the censors to find all the content was still there, just "hidden"!

to release the gore, just do "up right left down X triangle down up R2"

Laras boobs have gone from Madonna styled pointy to mahoosive in TR4 and then they shrunk :(

I think i read somewhere that her 'official size' is a 34DD - they had to pad Angelina Jolie out to that size for the films as she wasn't big enough.

intrested i really dont see what the problem is with a some violence in a game i play a lot of first person shotters all the time doesnt really make me want to go and kill someone... if i get killed in the game ill scream down the headset and then feel better lol.

Manhunt 1 wasnt banned in the UK but Manhunt2 is...

am surprised rockstar are just going to seat back about this will be intresting to hear what they have to say.

Humn... I'm not a big gamer, but am a rifle owner. I'll have to see on my next renewal if there is a new section for playing violent games.

Yes, but I think part of the reason why Manhunt 2 was disliked by the BBFC was due to the nature of the violence:

in Manhunt 2, players can saw their enemies? skulls in half; mutilate them with an axe; castrate them with a pair of pliers; and kill them by bashing their heads into an electrical box, where it is blown apart by a power surge. On Wii, players will not merely punch buttons or wield a joystick, but will actually act out this violence...

...One review describes using a saw blade to 'cut upward into a foe's groin and buttocks, motioning forward and backward with the Wii remote as you go'.
Running round with a variety of guns as a counter terrorist/SWAT/Delta/SAS/WW2 Commando/etc etc is a little different. One assumes even the more mentally-flaky members of society could detatch that from reality, where as castrating someone with a pair of pliers could be all too real.

Not that I'm defending the decision btw...

Incidentally, it seems the ESRB in the states (which can't legally enforce ratings, like the BBFC do here) has allowed it with an AO/18+ rating. Word is Rockstar wanted it to be an M/17 rating so may well challenge it, can't see them being that successful.

Alex.
21-06-07, 01:39 PM
Thing is, it doesn't matter what the rating for the game is. If little Johnny has it on his birthday/xmas list, mummy and daddy will buy it for him because he's spoilt. Ratings don't mean anything.

I hate school holidays.... Xbox live is always full of kids playing 15 and 18 rated games. Youngest I've encountered was an 8 year old playing Geras of War.

The point of a game is, you get to do what you 'probably' wouldnt do in real life. IE Shoot people, drive F1 cars etc etc.

Its just going to be another big blanket ban to weed out the few who dont have a grip on reality.

Stuart
22-06-07, 05:54 PM
Lee is most dissapointed that the game "manhunt" was about killing people and not finding strangers to bum

lmfao what they should really do is ban people with dangerously low IQ's, then we wouldnt be in this mess to start with.
