View Full Version : nova track/autotest project

thought i would start a topic about my new project. i owned this nova 6 months ago and i used it for autotesting. i then wanted more power and i bought a civic gt, but i dont like it. its unreliable and rotten. so..

the nova is a 1400 spi just now,
it has a K&N bolt on filter, stainless steel powerflow exhuast, omp harnesses and bucket seats, bonnet pins, boot clips, gte wrap around spoiler, mesh grille and a nice coat of bright blue paint.

i plan on taking the engine out, welding the bad bits up, re-spray the engine bay then fit a 1600 gsi with twin 40's and a higlift cam, get rid of the sound protection stuff inside, fit a full roll cage, i have already welded bucket seat mounts in, then spray the inside blue to match the car.

i plan on welding the rear arches/doors and re-spraying the car blue again. i also want to put some big raly mudflaps on, door squares and stickers etc.

i want to find two matching bucket seats and fit them, put a panel from the exhaust tunnel to the dash with a master switch, start button, fan switch and whatever else i need. i want to put some gsi 6 dial clocks in too.

pics coming soon and i will update the progress as often as i can..

you can see them both mate! i am thinking about taking this nova to kames to see whats he can do once i get the 40's, cam, vernier pulley, 4 branch, 1300 head on it. also going to have new headgasket set..

should get headgasket tonight/tommorow, tommorow night i am going to swap the heads over and fit new gaskets etc then i should have the 40's fitted by the weekend.

not got the money for a cam and pulley and 4 branch at the minute but it will come. also need to put a cage in it, spray inside and out, fit 16v brakes, hydraulic handbrake..

its too much work to weld it and tbh its not worth it IMO. the shell does need to be stripped bare and completly welded and re-sealed..

greg1.4
08-07-07, 09:38 PM
well, primed half the car today..ran out of masking tape so didnt get the back end done. came out really good so far.
this is my list of things to do before the 5th of August (and i am going on holiday for a week too)!! so time is getting tight.
got to spray the car, re fit my bumpers, headlights, grill, bonnet pins, wire my fan to a switch, wire my master switch and push button in, wire my new coil in, fit new camshaft which wont be here til wednesday/thursday, fit twin 40's and set them up, bolt my harnesses in properly, re-new engine oil, fit new manifold and downpipe, fit 4 speed box, new gearbox oil, fit new clutch, rear lights, mirrors and i think thats about it..
until i get my camshaft i cant build engine back togethor which is a pain.. and until i get more masking tape i cant spray her..
just thought i would give you an idea or what i actually need to do.. my holiday is a pain in the **** really.

well thats the engine finished.. just back from ibiza last night and this morning i got cracking with the nova.. at 6pm tonight i got her all re-built up.
then came to the bit of starting her.. battery was flat, so i put jump leads onto her and then fuel was pishing out the fuel mechanical fuel pump so i done away with that and ran the feed pipe straight into the pressure regulator and into the 40's (is this ok to do so)??

tried her again and she fired up.. yahoo! what a awesome noise.. going to spray it tommorow and finish hiding the wiring and making a wee loom for my engine bay, so plenty pics and a video will be on soon.

Greg

greg1.4
22-07-07, 02:36 PM
thats her sprayed.. so chuffed with it. especially when i have sprayed it myself and i think the result is cracking for a 14 year old.. i have got one run on the back quarter that is a very small thing but i know its there and it will annoy me.. i have tried to show this on one of the pics..

all i have to do now is put all my lights in, window wipers, finish the wiring in the engine bay, fit throttle cable, change clutch and gearbox.. i think thats about it really apart from stickers and finishing touches..

Did you spray that yourself? Looks a good job.

Nice car for track/autotesting, good stuff :)

greg1.4
26-07-07, 11:43 AM
yep i sprayed it myself.. its practice for when i go to do my black "road" nova..

the thing i could do better when spraying is put a bit more paint on.. some bits on the nova are not as shiny as other places. but i am very pleased with what it came out like especially when the garage is really crap for spraying..

i cant wait to the autotest on the 5th next month, will get a few pics of her in action and a video or two..

finished the autotest today (just).. finished 5th/6th overall, still dont know excactly where but it wasnt far away from there. had a fair bit of competition, a few rally cars there.

half way through the day my engine started rattling and got worse and worse through the day. i was pleased to finish but its the bottom end which means engine out job, re-build, fit clutch at same time and a cam and vernier pulley.. shame about the engine as there is one more event to do this year which i need to do and we havnt got alot of time..

uploading videos now..

no slipping the clutch..

Tight turns, probably oil surge starved the pump briefly of oil, causing the tapping...

but even 15mins after i turned it off before i put it on the trailer it was rattling like fook!

it doesnt seem to do it when cold, or not as bad anyway..

Love the sound of those carbs. Im currently trying to find a set for my 1400 corsa. Did they take alot of setting up Greg?

greg1.4
20-10-07, 08:15 PM
no the carbs didnt take much setting up. they were already on a nova and jetted for a 1300 so it wasnt too bad. had a muck about with the idle and advancing the timing to get it revving cleaner and more responsive..

they sound great! i love them! smile nearly every time i drive it..

had some brilliant fun in the car and good results. was competing in the last autoest yesterday and it was a really good laugh. i got a bit carried away though!:thumb: i managed to win the junior championship for 2007, but got good competition next year so i hope the car is going to be reliable like this year!

here is some pics of the car i took afte the autotest. sorry its a bit dark!

in the pics above the car is sitting next to the new shell that will be hopefully getting built soon.. got another nova coming that i might use or use bits off it.

the new car will have a full roll cage, better bucket seats, alloy door panels and switch panel, coilovers on the front, bilstein rear forest struts, sump and tank gaurds, quick rack, mudflaps, gsi skirts and will be getting seam welded and re-sprayed all white.

Seen you're car on here before and on youtube, and never put 2 and 2 together. Sounds amazing man. Dad's got Twin 40s on a CVH ford 1.6 in his Seven.....sounds soooooooo good.

The second video on this thread, of you handbraking was favourited ages ago on youtube......i just turn the sound right up to listen to the engine :P

I'm starting autotesting my nova this year, first one on April 16th.
Did some last year in my dads 1.4 Punto Sporting, but the car's worth too much to chuck around properly.
You're autotests seem quite quick and open compared to some of the tight and twisty ones we did last year, however there wasn't as much space as in your vids. Hoping this year some will be quicker.
Cant wait to start in the nova.

greg1.4
21-02-08, 08:25 PM
hi mate. thanks for the positive comment/s..

Autotesting is a good laugh, i am doing it for fun and as much experience as possible as i am under 17. then i plan on doing rallying.

it depends what venue we use, how fast and open the course is..

matt_vaughan
22-02-08, 07:43 PM
Yer, autotesting might not be that fast at times, but gives me such a buzz. I do it for the same reasons, still 16 at the mo, so autotesting is the only way for me to get the petrolhead fix, and quite cheap too.

Which rally tyres do you use on the fronts??? Colway, Max Sport?

greg1.4
22-02-08, 08:57 PM
Colway mud and snow's on the front for grass and sometimes gravel.

I had Max Sports at the start of last year and found they were pretty rubbish compared to my Colways.

Another wee tip (you probably know already) but get narrow 13/14'' wheels on the back and get tyre pressure up about 60/65psi.. makes it easier to handbrake, slide etc etc..

i have an autotest this weekend, i will try get some pics and videos..

matt_vaughan
11-03-08, 08:48 PM
good stuff mate. 60/65 psi?? bit much aint it lol

I'v been thinking about puttin the standard skinnies on the back for handbrake turns. Got some GTEs on the car at the mo so will change the rears for my next autotest in April. Cant wait to see how the old Nova performs. Might get some Colways for the fronts for some decent grip.

greg1.4
11-03-08, 10:13 PM
yes 65 psi is a bit hard but helps on tar, so the back end comes out easily..makes it easier to slide/handbrake etc..

let us know how the nova performs..get some pics and videos i you can mate!

p.s, keep the gte wheels on the front..more traction as they are 14'' and keep the pressure to around 30/35 psi depending on conditions..

I'm going to fashion some sort of in car camera mount (probably stick a tripod where the back seats were) and get some autotesting vids done.

Plus it'll show some mates what autotesting really is, because people never understand and mix it up with autograss racing!

i have alot of pics/vidoes of the car in action over the year so could take a while to get upto date..

anyway, as some of you will remember i went upto Kames in Muirkirk, Scotland to have a go on the track..i did enyoy it but the car was awful tbh lol it was my first time on the track so just wantd to see what it was like, i went with standard (non matching) road tyres, coilovers that were not set for tarmac etc..anyway, it gave me a bit of experience and i enjoyed it, was managing to keep up with some of the better machinery. kept comparing times..

so here is some pics and videos.

i then carried on competing in the soscc autotest championship that i am in.

the event was local, just 3 miles from my house..anyway, i had such a good day. managed to finish 2nd overall, 1st in class and 1st junior.

It wasnt without trouble though, we managed to rip the bottom of the gearbox to bits (smashed open the casing) so had to do the last 3 tests with no gearbox oil, bit of crunching/grinding but made it to the end..

also bent/snapped a bottom arm which was making it pull to the left something terrible..

it was also overheating/losing power (engine had been abused alot before so wasnt expectng it to go for ever) but again we managed to keep her going and i came home with such a great result.

here is some videos..

we thought we maybe better do a little work to the car after that autotest..forgot to say the engine mount came away from the chassis aswell but that was knocked and welded back into place..also managed to snap the alternator lowering bracket and lost the belt so had to run with no alternator for the last 2 runs..lol

here is some of the quick bodges we did (no point spending alot of money or time on it)

http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o95/Greg_Mcknight/P7150294.jpg

we welded up the front end, c14se engine (from stevie78 on here) fitted webbers, 1300 head and highlift cam etc again, new bottom arms/bbj's polybushed etc..

i also welded new arch's on and we re-sprayed the car (again a cheap quick job)
